However, it is not clear whether a shark, identified as a possible blue shark or tintorera, had been to blame.
The 85-year-old victim, an Italian woman, emerged from the sea at the beach in Playa de Palma around 11.30am this morning.
She had blood dripping from a wound to her left calf.
Part of her skin around the wound had been ripped off but it didn't affect muscle tissue, according to cops.

She was treated at the scene before being taken to a private clinic in Palma.
Lifeguards on jet skis patrolled the sea in search of what could have caused her injury.
The part of the beach where the drama occurred is known as Balneario 6.
Sunbathers were allowed back into the water around an hour after the incident.

Lifeguards found no sign of a shark, stingray or anything else that has been suggested as the cause of the woman's wounds.
Marine biodiversity expert Aniol Esteban told local press based on photos of the injury: "Our hypothesis is that the attack may have been caused by a bluefish."

Blue sharks, which rarely bite humans but have been implicated in several biting incidents, have forced the temporary closure of beaches on the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca in recent years.
A blue shark was blamed for an attack on a holidaymaker in Elche near Alicante in July 2016.

The 40-year-old victim was rushed to hospital and given stitches to a wound in his hand.
First aiders described the bite as 'large' and said he had come out of the sea with blood streaming from the injury.
In June 2023, a fully grown blue shark measuring seven feet caused panic off the Costa Blanca beach south of Alicante.
Bathers were filmed trying to run to safety through waist-high water as it neared the shoreline.

Lifeguards blew on their whistles to warn people to get out of the sea as quickly as possible.

It is not known if he fought off the shark, but he was able to scramble back to shore.
He was mauled on Sunday around two miles off Fuerteventura near the Los Molinos area - a popular spot on the western side of the island.

Radical settler who allegedly shot Palestinian dead in West Bank is released to house arrest
Witnesses say Yinon Levi, who was previously under US sanctions that were lifted by the Trump administration, killed Awdah Hathaleen, an activist, English teacher and father of three. The shooting occurred on Monday night in Umm al-Khair, a village that has long weathered settler violence in an area profiled in an Oscar-winning film. The Israeli military said an Israeli civilian had opened fire toward 'terrorists' who hurled rocks at Israelis. Israeli police said they detained an Israeli for questioning 'on suspicion of reckless conduct resulting in death and unlawful use of a firearm,' as well as five Palestinians and two foreigners. Police said yesterday that a court denied their request to extend the detention of the Israeli and ordered the suspect's release to house arrest. The police did not identify the suspect, but Israeli media ran photos of a smiling Levi inside a courthouse yesterday. Meanwhile, residents said four of the five arrested Palestinians remained in Israeli custody. Umm al-Khair is in Masafer Yatta, the focal point of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, which chronicles the Palestinians' effort to remain on their land in the face of violence and the expansion of Jewish settlements considered illegal by most of the international community. Hathaleen, whose footage appears in the documentary, was outspoken about life under Israeli occupation. His death sparked an outpouring of grief from family, international activists and rights groups. 'They took the other half of my heart,' his brother-in-law, Tariq Hathaleen, wrote on Instagram. 'You were always telling the story, and now you've become the story.' The encounter in which witnesses said Hathaleen was shot was caught on video in footage obtained by The Associated Press. The video shows Levi waving a pistol during a standoff with a group of Palestinians on a dusty road, a yellow excavator in the background. Witnesses said Levi was there to protect the excavator, which had rolled down from a nearby settlement and damaged Palestinian property earlier in the day. Another Palestinian shouts 'Shoot me! Shoot!' and Levi fires a shot, seemingly away from the crowd Alaa Hathaleen, a cousin who filmed the encounter, said he approached Levi 'face to face, filming him with my phone, telling him we don't have weapons and we were trying to stop him.' The video does not show where the bullets struck. Motasim Hathaleen (38), another cousin who was standing a few dozen yards away, said he saw Levi fire twice and then saw Awdah fall to the ground. Local activists said they attempted CPR. The over 500,000 settlers in the West Bank have Israeli citizenship, while the territory's three million Palestinians live under military rule, with the Palestinian Authority exercising limited autonomy in towns and cities. Settler attacks on Palestinians have spiked since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, as have attacks by Palestinian militants. The military has carried out several major military operations in the West Bank that have killed hundreds of Palestinians and forced tens of thousands from their homes. Last year, the Biden administration imposed sanctions like travel bans and asset freezes on radical settlers accused of violence, including Levi. The State Department at the time accused Levi of leading settlers in attacks on Palestinians, threatening them, burning fields and destroying property. He is still sanctioned by the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada. Anti-settlement activists say Levi has led attacks that displaced more than 300 Palestinians from four nearby hamlets since establishing a settlement outpost known as Meitarim Farm in 2021. In an interview last year, after the sanctions were imposed, Levi said the land was his and that he was protecting it from encroachment by Palestinians. He denied using violence to displace people. Cops have launched an urgent probe after Pixie, whose real name is Mark Wickens, was reportedly assaulted by a man inside the store on Monday night. 2 Mark Wickens, known on-stage as Pixie Polite, told fans about the alleged assault on Instagram 2 Cops are treating the incident as a 'hate crime' Pixie, who came fifth in the fourth season of Posting about the assault on Instagram, the 32-year-old said the incident "evolved from general comments and mocking, into verbal homophobic abuse, then into violence". The Met Police has since launched an urgent investigation into the assault, which is being treated as a "hate crime". A spokesperson said: "At 18:10hrs on Monday, 28 July officers responded to reports of assault and verbal abuse inside a shop on High Street Colliers Wood, Merton.
