MMC to begin membership registration in August, AGM scheduled for November
In a statement issued today following the presentation of appointment letters to the members of the Founding Board by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, MMC announced that applications can be submitted via its official website at www.majlismedia.my.
"Membership is open to media owners, professionals, individuals and organisations involved in the media ecosystem, as well as those representing the public's interest," the statement read.
The MMC also announced that its inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled to take place on Nov 7 in Kuala Lumpur. At the AGM, new board members will be elected and key matters will be discussed, including the membership fee structure, the industry's code of ethics, complaints mechanism, annual budget and MMC's by-laws.
At its first meeting, the Founding Board appointed Premesh Chandran as Interim Chairperson, pending the election of a full board later this year.
As an independent self-regulatory body for Malaysia's media industry, the MMC is expected to play a pivotal role in promoting ethical and responsible journalism, establishing the industry code of ethics and serving as a bridge between the media, government and the public.
"The MMC will enhance professionalism in the media industry and protect public interest within an increasingly complex media environment," MMC added.
MMC said its structure is designed to ensure broad representation, with the Founding Board consisting of elected representatives from media publishers, media professionals and public interest groups, including academics and members of civil society.
"Additionally, the government may appoint two representatives. Notably, the MMC Act 2025 stipulates that at least 25 per cent of board members must come from Sabah and Sarawak, and leadership of the Council must reflect gender parity — a first in Malaysia," it said.
In the same statement, Founding Board member Phyllis Wong, of the Borneo Post and Utusan Borneo, said she felt honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility, and was encouraged by the shared commitment to uphold media ethics and accountability, despite MMC not yet being fully operational.
"This marks the beginning of a unified voice for responsible journalism in Malaysia," she said.
Fellow board member Ronnie Teo, of the Kuching Division Journalists Association, described the MMC as a long-awaited platform to bring together media professionals across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. — BERNAMA

[UPDATED] Govt fine-tuning RON95 subsidy rollout, timeline pushed back
KUALA LUMPUR: The rollout of the targeted RON95 subsidy has been slightly delayed as the government continues to refine its implementation mechanism to avoid any negative impact to the public. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had made it clear that any policies implemented must not hurt the majority of the people. He said this scrutiny had resulted in a slight delay in the announcement timeline. "Following the implementation of several previous policies, including the targeted diesel subsidy and other initiatives, we need to closely examine the delivery mechanism to avoid any negative impact. "The expanding scope of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) also went through several adjustments after careful study. The same approach is being applied to policies yet to be implemented, including the targeted subsidies for RON95," he said during his weekly press conference at the Parliament building today. Fahmi said the prime minister had also touched on the matter during a recent retreat with members of parliament in Port Dickson, and had stressed that any measures must not adversely affect the people. On June 16, Anwar said the government would proceed with the RON95 fuel subsidy rationalisation, as it is crucial for the country. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said there was no issue of a RON95 price increase affecting the majority of Malaysians. On June 26, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the government would move ahead with its plan to implement targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol this year. However, the rollout would be done in phases to ensure the most effective and least disruptive mechanism is adopted. He said the aim is to strike a careful balance between delivering fiscal reforms while safeguarding the welfare of the rakyat.

Targeted RON95 subsidy rollout delayed due to further tweaks in mechanism, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The government's plan to implement targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol has been slightly delayed due to the need for a more detailed review of the mechanism, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister said the government is currently fine-tuning every aspect of the policy to ensure that its implementation will not have an adverse impact on the public. Fahmi said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also addressed the matter during the recent government retreat involving Members of Parliament. 'The Prime Minister expressed his view that he does not want the implementation of any policy to negatively affect the majority of the rakyat. 'It is this process of fine-tuning that has resulted in a slight shift in the timeline,' he told a weekly press conference at Parliament on Monday (July 21). Fahmi, who is also the government spokesperson, said several adjustments had already been made to earlier policies to avoid placing undue burden on the people. 'That is one of the reasons why, following the implementation of measures such as the diesel subsidy rationalisation and other efforts, we found it necessary to re-examine the subsidy delivery mechanism. 'In the same spirit of minimising impact, even the expansion of the sales and services tax (SST) underwent further refinements after it was announced. 'The same approach applies to policies that have yet to be implemented but were previously indicated including the targeted subsidy for RON95,' he said. The rationalisation of the RON95 subsidy was initially expected to be introduced by mid-year. Earlier this month, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the government was in the final stages of preparing for its implementation. The move is part of the government's broader fiscal reforms aimed at curbing leakages and ensuring that high-income groups and businesses contribute more fairly to national revenue. On a separate matter, Fahmi said the Transport Ministry will be introducing stricter enforcement measures on bus safety following last month's tragic crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students. He said Transport Minister Anthony Loke had presented preliminary findings on the incident during the Cabinet meeting last Friday, and that follow-up enforcement actions would be taken soon.
