Hawks too strong despite Saints star causing nightmares
Mabior Chol celebrated his 100-game milestone as one of the Hawks' 10 goal-kickers in the 14.10 (94) to 10.14 (74) triumph at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
It lifted Sam Mitchell's men into fourth spot with an 11-5 record that keeps them just two premiership points behind the second-placed Brisbane Lions.
Jack Gunston (three goals), Nick Watson and Chol (two each) all hit the scoreboard as Hawthorn's superior efficiency in attack ultimately told the tale.
Lloyd Meek was outstanding in the ruck and ex-St Kilda backman Josh Battle shone in defence despite jeers from his former fans throughout the match.
Jai Newcombe (22 disposals, seven clearances) and Connor Nash (19, eight) did plenty of the grunt work in the middle.
But the Hawks were on the wrong end of a 53-42 inside-50 count, leaving coach Mitchell unsure whether his glass was half-empty or half-full.
"You could look at it form a positive lens and say we kicked a reasonable score from the amount of inside-50s that we had," he said.
"The other way to look at it is, 'Why are we only going inside-50 42 times?'
"It was one of those games where I'm not sure too many people are rushing home to watch the replay."
Mitchell lauded his side's maturity as they regained the ascendancy every time St Kilda looked as though they might fight back into the contest.
The Hawks led 6.6 to 3.6 at the main break and rode some pressure early in the third quarter before putting a break on their opponents and seeing out a relatively comfortable win.
It came despite the best efforts of St Kilda playmaker Wanganeen-Milera and emerging star Max Hall.
Hall tallied 27 touches, five clearances and three goals, while out-of-contract gun Wanganeen-Milera had a career-best 43 disposals and 1004 metres gained as clubs fight for his signature behind the scenes.
"I'm going to have nightmares about him," Mitchell said.
"We scouted him, we tried so many things, but we just couldn't stop him. He was just too good.
"Just wherever he is, even when he was on the bench I was worried about him by the end."

St Kilda (5-11) fell to a fourth consecutive defeat after managing just three goals from 25 forward entries in the first half.
They added a wasteful 4.4 from 11 shots in the final term.
"The ability to connect was really disappointing," Saints coach Ross Lyon said.
"We turned it around a bit in the second half but we were inefficient and they just scored a bit easily, which has been a bit of a trend that we're trying to tighten up.
"So that was disappointing."

Injured Thompson finally has to quit at Wimbledon
Jordan Thompson's courageous, injury-hit Wimbledon odyssey is over as the battling Australian had to finally admit defeat to his physical problems, forced to retire during a one-sided fourth-round clash with American fifth seed Taylor Fritz. The Australian No.3, barely able to move properly after he seemed to land yet another injury on No.1 Court, finally had to call it a day at 6-1 3-0 down on Sunday, his dream of reaching his first grand slam quarter-final shattered. "Not the way I wanted to go through, I was excited to play Jordan today, I was excited to play good tennis," Fritz told the No.1 Court crowd. Taylor Fritz advances to the quarter-finals of The Championships 2025 after Jordan Thompson is forced to retire.#Wimbledon — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 6, 2025 "It's sad ... he's been battling out here, playing five-setters, I respect him for coming out ... I feel bad for him and I hope he gets better." Thompson, who had feared he may have to withdraw even before the first round, had almost miraculously battled through two five-setters while struggling with a debilitating sacroiliac joint problem in his back and yet somehow still managed to reach the last-16. But his season-long injury woes finally caught up with him against the merciless Fritz when, after a reasonable start, he appeared to suffer a thigh problem while stretching for a ball late in the fourth game. From then, moving stiffly, Thompson struggled to get down low to cope with the American's flashing shots and he looked increasingly forlorn. He glanced up to his player's box which featured Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt, as he found himself being outclassed in a first set that lasted just 21 minutes while rain from a storm outside lashed against the court roof. Thompson had an eight-minute medical time-out off-court after Fritz raced into a 3-0 lead in the second set, but it was clearly only delaying the inevitable. On the resumption, when one more forehand winner flashed past the Australian, it left him shaking his head and going to the net to offer his hand to Fritz. His dream clash under the roof, as a storm raged outside, in his ninth Wimbledon had lasted only 41 minutes. It's possible now that Thompson may even decide to give the rest of the season a miss, such has been the litany of injuries the 31-year-old has suffered this year. Fritz will go on to meet No.17 seed, Russian Karen Khachanov, who defeated Polish outsider Kamil Majchrzak 6-4 6-2 6-3.

Fritz into Wimbledon quarter-finals after Thompson retires
Australia's Jordan Thompson (right) was forced to retire from his Wimbledon fourth-round match against Taylor Fritz with an injury (Glyn KIRK) Taylor Fritz booked a place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in double-quick time on Sunday after Australia's Jordan Thompson retired injured with the score at 6-1, 3-0. The US fifth seed faced gruelling five-set battles in his opening two matches but it was a different story in his fourth-round encounter on Court One. Advertisement The Eastbourne champion broke Thompson twice to seal the first set in just 21 minutes and led 3-0 in the second set. The Australian then had a medical time-out to deal with an apparent thigh problem. He returned to the court and slipped 40-0 down in the fourth game before deciding he was unable to continue, with the match lasting just 41 minutes. "He's been playing five-setters," said Fritz, 27. "He was out playing a long doubles match yesterday you know, so he's been battling out here and I respected him for coming out. "Obviously his body's not right. So, you know, I feel bad for him." Advertisement Thompson, 44th in the rankings, was taken to five sets in his opening two singles matches at Wimbledon. Fritz, seeking to reach his first Wimbledon semi-final, will next face Russian 17th seed Karen Khachanov, who earlier beat Kamil Majchrzak with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 on Court Two. Fritz won a record fourth Eastbourne title last month and was pushed to his limits in his opening two matches at the All England Club. The world number five rallied from the brink to defeat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in five sets before going the distance against Gabriel Diallo in the second round. He then downed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in four sets, taking his time on court over three rounds to nearly 10 hours. jw/mw
