Jonnu Smith isn't hiding how he feels after being traded from the Miami Dolphins to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite his professionalism, the veteran tight end made it clear that the move stung—especially after the Dolphins refused to offer him a new contract following his breakout 2024 season.
Jonnu Smith reveals emotional side of trade, says Dolphins didn't value him like a Pro Bowler
In a candid conversation on teammate Terron Armstead's podcast, Smith opened up about his reaction to the trade and the failed contract talks that preceded it. 'Going through that process, I was hurt,' he said. 'I didn't think that collectively—as an organization, players, coaches—I didn't think that [they believed] trading Jonnu Smith, that's where our success starts.'
The Dolphins, according to Smith, told him they couldn't 'economically' justify paying him at a Pro Bowl level, despite his stellar season in 2024 where he caught 88 passes for 884 yards and 8 touchdowns.
'That one stung,' Smith admitted.
Pittsburgh welcomes Jonnu Smith with respect—and a payday
Once it became clear that Miami wouldn't budge on compensation, Smith began looking elsewhere. 'I had to make the decision to say, man, well I've got to go where I am appreciated and viewed on paper, economically, contract-wise as a top guy in this league—which I know I am,' he explained. 'And Pittsburgh was the team that saw me as that.'
The Steelers wasted no time showing their faith, giving Smith a one-year, $12 million extension as part of the deal that also saw cornerback Jalen Ramsey head to Pittsburgh.

In exchange, the Dolphins received star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Though Smith insisted he has 'no ill feelings' toward the Dolphins, it's hard to ignore the timing of the Steelers' schedule. Pittsburgh is set to face Miami in Week 15, giving Smith a chance to show his former team what they let go.

Given his comments and the motivation behind them, that matchup could be one of the most personal games on the calendar for the tight end. Now, in black and gold, Smith is looking forward to proving Miami wrong—and proving the Steelers right.

IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: 'They can't win' - Former England captain pleads Ben Stokes and co to bat for draw

BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND - JULY 05: Harry Brook of England avoids a short ball from Akash Deep of India during day four of the 2nd Rothesay Test Match between England and India at Edgbaston on July 05, 2025 in Birmingham, England. (Photo by) Former England captain Michael Vaughan has pleaded with Ben Stokes and co to play for a draw on the final day as they can't win the Edgbaston Test from this position. "They can't win this game," Vaughan told BBC Cricket. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "India have completely dominated the Test match with brilliant skill, great discipline. It's exactly what I want to see from England tomorrow. In a funny kind of way, this day has been coming where the Bazballers can't arrive on day five and even think about winning. "Have they got the ticker, the skill set, and the determination to try and get a draw? The next best thing from winning a Test match is getting a draw. If they just kind of give it away and just say, oh, you know, the way that we play, we're always on the front foot playing aggressively, they'll get bowled out quickly tomorrow. Have they got the skill set and the mindset to try and bat the full day and get on the bus to Lord's with a draw? We'll wait and see. " Vaughan pointed out that in the 34 Tests under Stokes' captaincy, England have drawn only once — a rain-affected game — while winning 21 and losing 12. He argued that to succeed in major series, especially against top sides like India or in Australia, England's mindset needs to shift. 'Bazball's going to get asked the ultimate question tomorrow. Are the team and the players going to go completely against what their natural instincts are to do? You've got to get what's best on offer. And what's best on offer at the minute is a draw,' Vaughan said on Test Match Special. India Dominate Day 4! Siraj & Akash Deep Rattle England 'If you want to win the big series against the likes of India at home in five matches and you want to go to Australia, I think it's impossible to have a mindset that we just win, that's all we go for. We don't play for draws. "A draw for England from this position, and I hope they get it more in a way of kind of success, if they can get away from here with a draw, it's almost better than last week's win because it's completely against their natural trade.' WI vs AUS: Steve Smith cops blow on dislocated finger, but says nothing to worry

Steve Smith and Australia survived another injury scare when he copped a blow on the very finger, the pinkie of the right hand, he had dislocated in the World Test Championship final against South Africa last month. The ball from Alzarri Joseph reared up from hard length, seamed back into his body sharply, and when taking the evasive measure, exposed his right glove and the ball cannoned onto it. He didn't show any immediate pain, but after facing the next ball, he removed his gloves, revealing a heavily strapped little finger. But when he looked to flex the finger, he grimaced in pain. The physio and his team rushed to attend to him. However, he showed hardly any discomfort to stroke an emphatic 71, the half-century not only helping Australia recover from a tricky 3/28 to 221/7 at the end, with a commanding lead of 254 runs, he also completed 15,000 runs in first-class cricket. In the post-match chat with the broadcaster, he admitted that he suffered pain on the finger, but was fine. 'My first ball hit me straight on the finger. It was not ideal but it feels alright. It is that kind of surface,' he said. The deck at St George's is getting more difficult to bat, he admitted. 'Some can shoot up, you might have to take a few on the hands, but it is all good. We are in a nice spot. It was a tricky surface – little up and down, little bit of seam movement. Don't think the wicket is going to get any better, will probably do a few more tricks,' he said. He made the required adjustments to bat freely. 'Decided to bat on middle stump, stay still and negate lbw as much as possible, and try to use the full face of the bat as much as possible. Tried to cash in on anything loose to put the pressure back on the bowler,' he said. His team is aiming to set a target of 300-plus to chase on the surface. 'The new ball is going to be pretty crucial for us. Hopefully we can get up to somewhere around 300 and then we'll see how it goes,' he said. In the commentary box, Greg Blewett couldn't stop showering superlatives on Smith. 'He's looking ominous on a surface where a lot of people have struggled. He's just got this unbelievable belief that he's going to make runs whenever he bats. Smith looked like a dynamite as soon as he went out there. He's been at another level really,' he said. Former West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite continued the raves: 'Steve Smith has proven why he is one of, if not, the best batter in our generation.'
