Dhanushkodi lagoon is declared a greater flamingo sanctuary to protect migratory birds and local biodiversity
Chief Minister M K Stalin made the announcement on June 5 during the World Environment Day celebrations held in Chennai.
"The lagoon also supports large populations of herons, egrets, sandpipers, terns, Kentish plovers, Hanuman plovers, and both greater and lesser flamingos," says Forest Secretary Supriya Sahu. "The area, located at the southern tip of Rameswaram Island and known for its unique landscape of sand dunes, marshes, and mangrove forests, serves as a crucial feeding and roosting ground for these birds.
It also doubles as a nursery for fish, molluscs, and crustaceans that depend on the area for their early development, thereby supporting local fisheries.

During the most recent wetland bird census, 10,761 birds were recorded in the area, representing 128 species, both migratory and resident, says Supriya. In addition, the Dhanushkodi beach is an important nesting site for turtles. On the botanical front, the area harbours 47 recorded plant species, including important mangrove types such as Avicennia and Rhizophora.
These mangroves are instrumental in stabilising the coastline, preventing erosion, and buffering the impact of storm surges.
They also offer shelter to marine organisms and birds.
The broader diversity of plants, including herbs, shrubs, and trees, creates a vibrant ecosystem that supports insects, birds, and small mammals. By designating the area as a bird sanctuary, the govt aims to provide formal protection to both resident and migratory bird species and their habitats.
The declaration is also expected to bolster conservation efforts for the region's varied ecosystems, ensuring their long-term ecological integrity.
"We hope to promote public awareness about wetland conservation and the importance of protecting migratory birds," says Supriya. "Responsible tourism practices may also emerge, potentially leading to employment opportunities for local communities while preserving one of Tamil Nadu's most delicate ecological hotspots."

Launched in 2023, the initiative reconnects overseas Tamils aged 18-30 with their heritage through visits to historical sites, interactions with scholars, and exposure to traditional arts and architecture. Participants are expected to serve as cultural ambassadors in their home countries.

Visitors to Bengaluru's Lalbagh can now hop on EV cycles to explore park at own pace
BENGALURU: After a successful two-month pilot, Lalbagh Botanical Garden launched a permanent bicycle and tricycle rental service on Wednesday to allow visitors to explore the entire park at their own pace. The horticulture department, which had initially introduced 10 electric cycles and tricycles in June on the occasion of World Environment Day, extended the trial period to July and expanded the fleet to 15. The department now has 30 electric vehicles - 10 tricycles and 20 bicycles. The service is available at two entry points -- the East Gate (Double Road) and North Gate (main gate). Visitors aged above 18 years can rent a cycle for Rs 100, while those aged between 12 and 18 will be charged Rs 50. Each ride lasts 50 minutes, giving visitors enough time to cover the 240-acre expanse of Lalbagh and also the lesser-visited sections that are usually difficult to cover at once. M Jagadeesh, Joint Director, horticulture department, said these are not conventional cycles. The fleet consists of electric cycles capable of covering up to 40 km on a single charge. To ensure a smooth ride, fully charged backup batteries will be kept ready at all times. Each bike is equipped with a battery indicator, and vehicles will be recharged in advance if needed, he added. Modelled on public cycling systems popular in Germany and Holland, Lalbagh's initiative received an overwhelming response during the trial period and is the first of its kind in any government-run park in India. This will enhance mobility within the garden but also offer a reason for locals and tourists to visit, Jagadeesh added. Guided tour to begin soon The department, which recently launched a guided tour at Cubbon Park, plans to launch this at Lalbagh in August. The 90-minute 'Lalbagh Walks' will cover lesser-known sections of the garden and highlight its ecological richness of the park.

Coimbatore's Ukkadam Twin Bus Terminus project gets nod; work begins at Rs 21.55 crore
COIMBATORE: The long-awaited reconstruction of the Ukkadam bus terminus is finally taking shape, with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) issuing the work order for the commencement of the Ukkadam Twin Bus Terminus project. The CCMC council granted formal approval to the project with revised cost on Thursday. The revamp, aimed at decongesting traffic and improving commuter experience, is to be executed at an estimated cost of Rs 21.55 crore. The proposal to renovate the Ukkadam bus stand was first announced by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin during his visit to Pollachi in Coimbatore on March 13 last year. The plan initially earmarked Rs 20 cr for the project, but after a detailed project report (DPR) was prepared, the cost was revised to Rs 21.55 cr. The Ukkadam bus stand is one of Coimbatore's six major bus terminals, alongside Gandhipuram, Singanallur, Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Mettupalayam Road, and the Omni Bus Stand on Sathy Road. A significant portion of the original terminus was demolished to facilitate the ongoing Ukkadam-Aathupalam Flyover construction, prompting the government to upgrade the terminal with modern facilities. The revamped project includes the construction of two separate bus terminals, one near the Ukkadam police station where the existing terminal is functional, and another on the land opposite the station, which was formerly used as a fish market. A senior official from the CCMC's engineering wing confirmed to TNIE that construction on both sites will begin simultaneously. "The terminal on the old fish market land, towards Oppanakara Street, will accommodate around 80 buses, primarily local town buses," the official said. "The other terminal on the existing bus stand premises will cater to about 70 buses, including both local and inter-district or inter-state services." The twin terminals are designed to feature state-of-the-art facilities such as modern restrooms, mothers' feeding rooms, food courts, commercial outlets, passenger waiting halls, and dedicated parking areas. The planning for the twin terminal was also aligned with the upcoming Coimbatore Metro Rail project, which envisions Ukkadam as the central hub for all four proposed corridors. While two metro corridors are expected to begin after securing approval and funding from the Union Government, the bus terminus project will act as a critical complement to the city's future multi-modal transport infrastructure.
