'Must-see' crime drama with 100% Rotten Tomatoes score soars up streaming charts
A crime drama that fans have hailed a 'must-see' and even 'one of the best shows of the year' has climbed its way up Amazon Prime Video's charts.
Ballard is a spin-off of Bosch, which aired between 2014 and 2021 and followed Los Angeles Police Detective Harry Bosch (played by Titus Welliver).
This time, Maggie Q takes the lead role as LAPD Detective Renée Ballard, another character based on Michael Connelly's detective novels.
The ten-part series sees her take command of the LAPD's new cold case unit within the Robbery-Homicide Division, as she leads a team attempting to solve decades-old murders.
As she opens up the investigations, Ballard uncovers a web of corruption and secrets within the police department.
The synopsis teases: 'Detective Renée Ballard plunges into a web of murder and corruption as she hunts a ruthless serial killer and uncovers a sinister police conspiracy that threatens everything she stands for.
'With her own demons nipping at her heels, Ballard must outwit both criminals and colleagues to bring long-overdue justice to the victims and their families.'
Just days after it was released, Ballard has landed the number one spot on Amazon Prime Video's UK charts and scored a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.
One person praised on Rotten Tomatoes: 'It doesn't disappoint and lives up to all expectations. It should surprise no one that Michael Connelly has another winner. Must see TV!'
Another said: 'I can't stop watching it. After every episode, I think, "I need to go do x," but then I watch another.'
'Very engaging, binged the whole thing without stopping,' someone else said.
Over on X, a fan wrote: '#Ballard is amazing. It picks up the pace when needed but also slows down, giving you time to breathe without ever being boring. It's been so long since I've seen a show do that, and isn't just a sensory overload (even if you binge it in a day). Also Maggie Q is absolutely [fire].'
'What a rollercoaster! Ballard was worth the binge... So far, Harry Bosch's universe remains undefeated,' another added.
As well as roaring reviews from audience members, critics have hailed the Amazon Prime series.
'Smartly acted, beautifully paced and genuinely engaging, 'Ballard' is a thrilling ride from start to finish,' a Variety critic said.
A review from Paste Magazine added: 'Ballard is kick-a**, earnest, and extremely well-written, and may well be one of the best shows of the year.'
Addressing the demands for a second season, Maggie Q revealed to Variety: 'The good news is we have a writers' room already, so that's very positive. That does not mean we're going to get greenlit for a second season!
'I wish it did, but I've had writers' room start and then get ended. But the good news is that we are breaking the second season, which is very exciting.'
Ballard is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

Clarkson's Farm star forced to call 999 during heatwave over fire risk
Clarkson's Farm star forced to call 999 during heatwave over fire risk Kaleb Cooper, who has become famous since appearing on the Amazon Prime show alongside Jeremy Clarkson, took to social media to share the warning Kaleb Cooper, a familiar face from Clarkson's Farm, has criticised individuals for releasing Chinese lanterns into the Cotswolds countryside amid a heatwave. The farming contractor urgently contacted emergency services yesterday upon spotting the lanterns, which are known to pose a significant wildfire risk according to fire services. The Oxfordshire native and breakout star of the show with Jeremy Clarkson took to social media on Saturday (July 12) to voice his concerns. In an Instagram post titled "what is going on in the world" Kaleb shared a video message. Although the video mainly showed a shadowy figure, it included Kaleb speaking directly to the camera, expressing his disbelief: "I can't quite believe what I'm seeing at the moment." He continued, revealing his immediate action: "I've just called this in to 999 but someone has felt the need to light two Chinese lanterns in and around the Chipping Norton area. I'm looking at both of them as we speak right now." Kaleb then questioned the rationale behind such actions during dangerous weather conditions: "But what goes through someone's mind when they decide to light two Chinese lanterns in the middle of a heatwave. "We've hardly had any rain since March. Jesus, honestly. What's going on with the world," reports Gloucestershire Live. His followers quickly echoed his sentiments in the comments section. Kaleb stars alongside Jeremy Clarkson in Clarkson's Farm (Image: Amazon Prime Video ) One follower emphasised the need for awareness: "People need educating mate. Spread the message." Another supporter agreed with Kaleb's warning: "Well said Kaleb, this could quite easily start a wild fire." A third individual expressed concern saying: "Some people really don't have a clue. The farmer's field next to mine is that dry I can literally put my whole hand down the cracks of the soil." Meanwhile, another added their voice to the chorus of concerns: "They should never do this for any celebration. They let some of these off for a wedding near me. They set fire to someone's house and barn when they landed. Plus livestock can ingest them when they land. It's like balloon releases. It's littering, pure and simple. Should be banned." Kaleb was praised by his followers for his actions (Image:) On its website, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service offers advice about sky lanterns, describing them: "Sky lanterns are a beautiful sight - but the potential damage they can cause is significant. "They use the heat of a naked flame to float. They're not only a fire hazard but also a danger to livestock, agriculture, camping activities, thatched properties and hazardous material sites. "Whilst ignition and launch are mostly in the control of the user, the actual flight path and end destination are not. There's no guarantee the fuel cell will be completely out and cooled when the lantern lands, so any contact with a flammable surface could start a fire. "There's evidence of them causing fires, wasting police time, being mistaken for distress flares, misleading aircraft and killing livestock." Practical Magic star snubbed by bosses for 2026 sequel as her role is 'recast'
Evan Rachel Wood played Sandra Bullock's character's daughter in the 1998 romantic fantasy movie, but her offer to star in the upcoming sequel in any capacity was declined With Practical Magic confirmed for a sequel in 2026, both of its lead actresses, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will return as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. But Evan Rachel Wood, who played Sally's daughter Kylie Owens in the 1998 movie, will not reprise her role, with the actress being spectacularly snubbed by producers. Despite her character still playing a part in the upcoming film, her role has been recast, according to the Westworld star, 37. The actress announced the news on Instagram Stories, typing out a post to explain her absence from the next instalment of the beloved story. The actress wrote: "I am getting asked about this a lot, so l'll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel. l offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line." She continued: "I was told they are re-casting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters." In the movie, her character Kylie and her younger sister Antonia go to live with their aunts after their father dies. But it seems bosses have already picked out Wood's replacement. Deadline reports that 25-year-old American actress Joey King will take on the role of Kylie Owens. Joey, who portrayed Gypsy Rose Blanchard in Hulu's series The Act, is set to join Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as part of the renewed cast. In February this year, Nicole, 58, remained tight-lipped about the progress of the new film, which is expected to drop in 2026. Chatting with Variety, she said it was "moving ahead rapidly." But when pressed for details about a script, she told the interviewer: "I'm not answering anymore, you can ask Sandy." Presumably referring to her co-star Sandra Bullock, she added: "I love Sandy!" When asked when she would start shooting, she again refused to answer. Nicole prompted the interviewer to 'ask Sandy, my beautiful Sandy.' When asked if she ever thought she would be doing a sequel to Practical Magic, she cryptically answered: "Well were not doing it yet," adding again it was "moving ahead rapidly, just needs a little magic." Nicole Kidman confirmed the news of the much-awaited sequel last year, revealing that she and co-star, and close friend, Sandra Bullock would be once again joining forces once again. In an interview with People magazine, Nicole dished: "Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that's that." She added: "There's a lot more to tell which is why we go, 'OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.'" Kidman also hinted at the creative process, saying, "(We) found a way in." The buzz around the sequel grew when Warner Bros. teased fans with a social media post after the film hit streaming services, referencing the iconic "midnight margaritas" scene. The filmmakers said in a statement: "Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman's beloved novel and into theaters around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story."

I'm a film writer and want four things from Superman sequel
The latest iteration of Superman is currently soaring to success in cinemas. James Gunn's reboot of both the Man of Steel and the DC cinematic universe has begun on a largely positive note. A bumper weekend with more than $120 million in takings at the worldwide box office, paired with an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes should have fans excited for the future. Naturally that should include sequels, spin-offs and significantly more crossovers, the likes of which was teased in the new film. As a film writer, I made sure to go and see the release for myself at the earliest opportunity. Having been down on DC's more recent output, I was pleasantly surprised and already looking forward to what is next. So here are X things that I would like to see from a Superman sequel. Note, these are wishes for a straight Superman follow up, Justice League style crossovers or spin-offs do not count. James Gunn has spoken out about his decision to not include the tired origin story of Superman in the new film. He put forward, rightly so, that audiences have seen it too many times and don't need to retread those plot points again. The same seems to be said for the role of his adoptive human parents. Ma and Pa Kent still play a crucial role in the film. However, neither of them needed to die for it to happen. Like Batman's origin story, we usually have to suffer the death of Kent senior, perhaps with Superman's failure to save him (looking at you Man of Steel) to somehow propel him to be the hero he is. Not so for Gunn's Superman. Their existence is enough for that. It would be a welcome change if Gunn continues this for at least another movie. Superman has already achieved a significant character moment without losing one of his parents. If it is to happen in the future, maybe make it off screen between movies. Edi Gathegi's turn as Mr Terrific is a standout for the film. Despite some criticism of too many characters to keep tabs on, I didn't feel that was the case at all. This was no Suicide Squad. Each of the extra characters - or Metahumans that were chosen to make an appearance brought something to the table. The perfect example of that was Mr Terrific. Perhaps one of the lesser known characters from the comics, which the film was cheekily aware of. However, he played an essential role without taking away the spotlight. It would be great to see Gunn repeat this trick. Bring another lesser known character into the spotlight Perhaps it could be a version of a character that starts as a potential ally but soon threatens to become a dangerous foe? Speaking of Edi Gathegi, one of the best action sequences of the entire film sees his character take on a camp of soldiers to the tune of Noah and the Whale's 5 Years Time, while Lois Lane watches on from the safety of an energy shield. It is trademark James Gunn. However, it was a shame we didn't get the same for Superman. Early on we find out that Lex Luthor has successfully analysed Superman's battles enough to know what moves to choose when, in order to beat him. As a result, we rarely see him really flex his moves or show off his style. Perhaps it is something we could be treated to in an opening sequence for a sequel. Gunn did a similar thing for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The team was assembled for the follow up, and fans got to see them play out their roles to the catchy soundtrack of Mr. Blue Sky. The appearance of Milly Alcock's Supergirl ahead of her standalone film was a surprise. Although she doesn't stick around much, there's no need for such big cameos next time around. While it was great to have the few members of the Justice Gang hanging about, Gunn and the new DC studios need to avoid repeating past mistakes. Previous movies that brought Batman and Superman together felt too rushed. No one has any idea who will even be the Batman in this new DCU. It's almost certainly not Robert Pattinson, whose films are being treated as a separate universe referred to as Elseworlds. Marvel took four years to bring the Avengers together but that was with a clear path. DC Studios don't seem to have a concrete plan for the new Justice League so there is no need to get ahead of ourselves. Especially not when we can enjoy Superman movies again.
