Ringgit likely range-bound next week as market waits on BNM's next move, says analyst

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — The ringgit is expected to trade range-bound against the greenback next week, as investors adopt a cautious approach ahead of Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on July 9. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the local note is likely to stay steady, with market participants focusing on the central bank's upcoming decision. 'The outcome of the meeting could shape the ringgit's near-term trajectory. We are calling for a 25 basis-point cut in the overnight policy rate (OPR), as the need for monetary support has grown given the increasingly challenging macroeconomic outlook for the second half of 2025,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam said subdued global demand, ongoing geopolitical tensions and signs of moderating domestic activity may lead the central bank to adopt a more accommodative stance. 'In the absence of major external shocks, the ringgit is expected to trade within a narrow band of RM4.22 to RM4.23 against the greenback throughout the week,' he added. The ringgit ended the week higher against the greenback, closing at 4.2180/2260 from 4.2300/2355 last Friday. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit appreciated vis-a-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9225/9282 from 2.9359/9399, and increased against the British pound to 5.7601/7710 from 5.8141/8217. However, it fell versus the euro to 4.9675/9770 from 4.9597/9661 at the end of last week. The ringgit also traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies. The local note improved against the Singapore dollar to 3.3114/3182 from 3.3192/3240, enhanced versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.6/261.2 from 260.9/261.4, while it weakened versus the Thai baht to 13.0302/0609 from 13.0254/0488, previously. It was unchanged against the Philippine peso at 7.47/7.49. — Bernama

Bursa bulls eye breakout next week — but July 9 tariff deadline could spoil the party

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Bursa Malaysia is expected to trade in cautious mode next week, but with an upside bias, with the US tariff deal deadline on July 9 in focus, analysts said. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng anticipates the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) to trend within the range of 1,530-1,560 points, representing its support and resistance levels. 'The benchmark index has broken out of its consolidation range with strong volume, climbing above critical moving averages. A bullish exponential moving average crossover and strengthening moving average convergence/divergence indicator, along with a relative strength index that has yet to peak, strengthen the case for a shift toward a more bullish trend,' he told Bernama. Echoing Thong, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd's head of investment research, Mohd Sedek Jantan, said the local bourse is expected to experience heightened caution and intermittent volatility ahead, as investors closely monitor the evolving landscape of global trade policy. 'Particular attention is centred on the 'Liberation Day' US tariff deadline of July 9, when elevated tariffs -ranging from 20 to 30 per cent- are expected to be reinstated on countries without formalised bilateral trade deals. 'Malaysia, among others, may face renewed uncertainty should negotiations remain unresolved. US President Donald Trump has indicated that official notifications outlining new tariff rates will be issued imminently to affected trade partners,' he said. On a weekly basis, the barometer index advanced 22.03 points to 1,550.19 from 1,528.16 in the preceding week. The FBM Emas Index expanded 218.92 points to 11,617.72, the FBMT 100 Index rose 209.34 points to 11,390.70, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index garnered 276.69 points to 11,617.82. The FBM 70 Index climbed 516.38 points to 16,787.04, and the FBM ACE Index rose 51.64 points to 4,526.40. Across sectors, the Financial Services Index went up 54.12 points to 17,791.22, the Plantation Index surged 119.72 points to 7,448.74, and the Energy Index gained 8.93 points to 741.61. Turnover for the shortened trading week increased to 17.25 billion units worth RM12.62 billion from 11.68 billion units worth RM8.45 billion in the preceding week. The Main Market volume advanced to 9.22 billion units valued at RM11.41 billion against 5.40 billion units valued at RM7.39 billion previously. Warrant turnover improved to 6.62 billion units worth RM772.30 million versus 4.96 billion units worth RM655.61 million a week ago. The ACE Market volume ticked up to 1.40 billion units valued at RM437.52 million compared with 1.07 billion units valued at RM399.48 million a week earlier. — Bernama

Tiara Jacquelina tells of financial toll in championing the arts in Malaysia

(From left) Kakiseni president and film director Low Ngai Yuen (moderator), classical dancer Ramli Ibrahim, producer Tiara Jacquelina and fashion designer Bernard Chandran at the arts forum organised by the Merdeka Award Trust. KUALA LUMPUR : Award-winning producer and director Tiara Jacquelina has opened up about the immense challenges of financing the arts in Malaysia after pouring her own money and energy into creating large-scale productions that championed Malaysian stories. Tiara, a driving force behind some of Malaysia's most iconic productions, described the pressure of justifying art in commercial terms as exhausting. The arts advocate told a forum here today that despite her commitment to national identity and cultural storytelling, she grew tired of constantly having to 'knock on doors' just to make a case for support. 'I did it all for the love of the arts, but I learned the hard way that passion alone isn't sustainable,' said the founder of the Enfiniti Academy of Musical Theatre and Performing Arts. At one point, Tiara secured RM1 million in sponsorship from a major corporate body. However, she said it was an amount that came with strings attached. She was expected to deliver up to three times in returns, alongside key performance indicators (KPIs), publicity deliverables, and media coverage. Instead of nurturing creativity, she found herself buried in spreadsheets. 'Just as I was stepping into the director's role, I was handed demands for TV airtime, publicity, ticket targets and other requests. That's not the role of an artist – that's a media agency's job,' she said. Tiara added that because of the lack of proper partnerships available to artists, many of them have had to compromise their visions to fit into corporate moulds. 'Beyond sponsorships, what we really need is a model thinking in terms of community and ecosystem building. 'If we want to see a thriving arts sector in the next five years, both the government and corporate Malaysia must commit to long-term investment in the development of artists and their work.' Tiara was speaking at a forum titled Profit Meets Performance: When Arts Means Business organised by the Merdeka Award Trust here. Low Ngai Yuen, president of the arts and culture NGO Kakiseni and moderator of the session, agreed that the arts ecosystem in Malaysia lacks the structure and support needed for creatives to thrive. Dancer and founder of the Sutra Foundation, Ramli Ibrahim, noted that the value of the arts should not be measured by financial metrics alone. 'You can't define the success of the arts in ringgit and sen,' he said, stressing that the 'profit' of arts lies in its influence on people. Fashion designer Bernard Chandran took the conversation further, stating creatives needed to be given freedom by businesses in order to see their visions realised. 'You can have all the money and tools in the world, but if they don't represent your aesthetic, your voice — it means nothing.'
