
Most Indian startups replicas of Western biz models; lack genuine innovation: Suhel Seth
Seth argued that the Indian startup ecosystem is dominated by businesses that replicate ideas already proven abroad, rather than developing original solutions tailored for India.
"When I look around on the start-up ecosystem in India, I find almost all of that replica. And all of that is a copy of what has already been done in the West. A guy wants to start a vada-paw shop, he calls himself a startup," Seth said at the CII Annual Business Summit 2025.
He also suggested criteria to define a true startup like it must represent a technological leap, be genuinely unique and non-replicable, and inspire pride among its creators.
Seth said that very few Indian startups meet these criteria, with most focusing on copying existing models rather than pioneering new ones.
He pointed out that the startup conversation in India is overly fixated on valuations, unicorn status, and founder wealth.
"The start-up universe is discussed only monetarily. It is not discussed in terms of how you've changed lives. Currently, any discussion around startups is only in three areas. Have they become a unicorn? How much has the founder made? When will I (the investor) exit?
"This is the only business domain I have seen where people enter with a view to exit. So, people don't treat those businesses seriously," Seth noted.
He questioned why India, despite its vast talent pool and growing digital infrastructure, has not produced global tech giants comparable to Facebook or Google.
Seth attributed this gap to social pressures, risk aversion, and a lack of supportive ecosystems that encourage innovation and long-term commitment.
Further, Seth floated the idea of a single emergency healthcare number for the entire country.
He urged entrepreneurs and investors to shift their focus from short-term financial gains to building startups that are meaningful, sustainable, and visible in their impact on Indian society.

Amid impasse over India deal, Trump says tariff letters for 12 nations signed
Amid uncertainty over whether India and the US will sign an interim trade deal before July 9, American President Donald Trump has said that the US has begun the process of informing countries of the reciprocal tariffs they must pay, and that he has already signed 12 letters scheduled to be dispatched on Monday. However, Trump had stated that the reciprocal tariffs would come into effect on August 1, indicating a potential extended window for negotiations with countries, including possibly India, which have not struck a deal with the US before the July 9 deadline. The US had originally announced a 26 per cent reciprocal tariff on India. A government official told The Indian Express that agriculture has been a major sticking point in negotiations, particularly because India has adopted an unwavering stance on this sector. However, India has shown willingness to reduce duties across a broad range of tariff lines. Traditionally, India has been defensive in trade pacts concerning agriculture. 'I signed some letters and they'll go out on Monday, probably 12. Different amounts of money, different rates of tariff,' Trump told reporters on July 4, adding that the names of the countries to receive the letters would only be revealed on Monday. This comes as Indian negotiators, led by Chief Negotiator and Special Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal, returned on Friday after nearly a week of talks with the US. A government official indicated that the likely interim deal will involve only goods, as services and labour issues are not currently part of the negotiations. While India is seeking greater market access for its textiles, leather and footwear, the US is pushing for access to India's agricultural and dairy markets—a major hurdle, since Indian farmers often operate on small land parcels with limited technological support. In contrast, the US has demanded India to drop GM regulation. Notably, there is significant resistance to genetically modified (GM) crops in India. Only one GM crop—Bt cotton—is approved for cultivation. No GM food crop is commercially grown, although experimental trials continue. However, imports of GM soybean oil and canola oil are permitted. A 2013 report by the European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility (ENSSER) emphasised that many studies deeming GM foods safe were industry-funded and that long‑term, independent studies were lacking. 'Environmental studies have shown that widespread use of Bt crops can lead to pest resistance, such as in the pink bollworm, and pose risks to non‑target species such as monarch butterflies, as suggested in a 1999 Nature study. Additionally, the overuse of glyphosate with herbicide-tolerant GM crops has led to 'superweeds' and increased herbicide use,' the New Delhi‑based think tank GTRI said. GTRI further said that GM and non‑GM crops may intermingle at various stages of the supply chain—during transport, storage or processing. 'Once GM material enters, there is a high risk it could leak into local farming systems or processed food chains, posing risks to food safety, environmental integrity, and India's export reputation—especially in GM‑sensitive markets such as the EU,' the think tank warned. The think tank added that the import of GM products, like animal feed, could negatively affect India's agricultural exports to the European Union, which enforces strict GM labelling rules and faces strong consumer opposition to GM‑linked products. Although GM feed is permitted, many European buyers prefer fully GM‑free supply chains. India's fragmented agri‑logistics and lack of segregation infrastructure increase the likelihood of cross‑contamination and trace GM presence in export consignments. This could result in shipment rejections, higher testing costs, and erosion of India's GM‑free image—particularly in sectors like rice, tea, honey, spices and organic foods, GTRI said. Nifty seen moving rangebound amid sector rotation; cautious optimism advised
Nifty is expected to trade between 25,000–25,650 in the coming week without a clear directional trend. After a strong move in the week before this one, the Nifty spent the last five sessions largely consolidating in a very defined markets traded with a weak underlying bias and lost ground gradually over the past few days; however, the drawdown remained quite measured and within the expected range. As the markets consolidated, the trading range got Nifty moved in a 337-point range during the week. While the Index formed a near-similar high, it marked a much higher low. The volatility also retraced; the India VIX came off by 0.59% to 12.31. While showing no intention to trend higher, the headline Index closed with a net weekly loss of 176.80 points (-0.69%).The Nifty has created an intermediate resistance zone between 25600 and 25650. A trending move on the upside would happen only if the Nifty is able to take out this zone on the upside convincingly. Until that happens, we will see the Nifty continuing to consolidate with 25100 acting as support. This is the prior resistance level, which is expected to act as support in case of any corrective retracement. So long as the Nifty is inside the 25000-25650 zone, it is unlikely to develop any sustainable directional bias on either was a trading holiday in the US. Because of this, we will not have any overnight cues to deal with on Monday. The Indian markets may see a stable and quiet start. The levels of 25650 and 25800 are likely to act as probable resistance points. Support levels come in at 25250 and weekly MACD is bullish and remains above its signal line. The weekly RSI is 62.40; it stays neutral and does not show any divergence against the price. No major formation was noticed on the pattern analysis of the weekly chart shows that after breaking above the rising trendline resistance while moving past the 25000-25150 zone, the Nifty consolidated after trending higher for four days. Over the past week, it gave up a portion of its gains and consolidated at higher levels. In the process, it has dragged its support level higher to 25000. As long as the Index remains above this point, the breakout and the resumption of the upmove observed in the preceding week remain valid and it is expected that the Nifty will remain within the 25000-25650 range over the coming week. The markets are unlikely to develop any directional bias unless they move past the 25650 level or violate the 25000 level. Sector rotation within the market is very much visible; it would be imperative to efficiently rotate sectors and stay invested in those that show improved relative strength and a promising technical setup. We are likely to see improved performance in the Auto, Energy, IT, and broader markets, among other sectors. It is also strongly recommended to protect profits here, where the stocks have run up hard. Any aggressive shorting should be avoided as long as the Nifty stays above the 25000 level.
