Goyal: No compromises, only benefits in trade deal with UK

Time of India17 hours ago
NEW DELHI: Commerce and industry minister
Piyush Goyal
Saturday said that India managed to get extensive benefits without making any compromises under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the UK.
"We have protected many of our sensitive items like rice and sugar. Dairy has not been opened, so is ethanol. India has kept itself safe in the areas that are sensitive. No duty concession has been given (in these areas). This FTA carries a very big message for the future economy of India. We will all see the benefits that India will get under it in the coming years," he said told the media.
Goyal said Indian seafood will be able to compete more favourably with produce from Vietnam and Singapore in the UK market.
The minister said that govt managed to lower the duties on automobiles and scotch - areas where talks had been held up for years - but ensured that the volumes were not significant to affect the domestic industry.
Similarly, he argued there was no compromise on intellectual property rights. "We will not allow any evergreening of patents. Yet, we have managed to get a very strong chapter on intellectual property not just in the UK agreement, but also with EFTA countries," he said.

Switzerland, which is part of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the UK have for long demanded easier rules around patents as both are home to large pharma companies.
Citing the recent controversy over Prada launching footwear that was a rip-off of Kolhapuri chappals, Goyal said with the implementation of CETA, India will get the credit for products that enjoy Geographical Indication (GI). "Someone used the design of our Kolhapuri sandal.
Commerce ministry immediately took action on it. In future, when Kolhapuri sandals are exported, India will get the credit. It will be exported as India's GI product," he said.
While being critical of the review of trade agreements with Japan, South Korea and Asean countries, which were signed by UPA, Goyal said the UK treaty provided for a review every five years, but both countries needed to agree.
Separately, the commerce department said the UK treaty safeguards to temporarily raise tariffs or suspend concessions in case of a sudden surge in British imports, which harms domestic industry. The duration of a bilateral safeguard measure under this pact is initially up to two years and can be extended for an additional two years if investigations show that the safeguard measure is needed to prevent serious injury to domestic industry.

UK cos can offer telecom services in India without local office under CETA

Companies from the UK will be able to offer services in sectors such as telecom, and construction in India without setting up a local presence, under the free trade agreement signed between the two countries. The British firms will be treated on par with Indian firms. The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed on July 24 in London. It may take about a year for items implementation as the free trade pact needs approval from the British Parliament. "UK companies can now provide telecom, construction, and related services in India without establishing a local presence, enjoying full national treatment, meaning they will be treated on par with Indian firms," the commerce ministry said. Services is a key chapter in the agreement as both countries are strong in different kinds of services. India enjoys a trade surplus of around $6.6 billion with the UK. The country's services exports stood at $19.8 billion and imports at $13.2 billion. In the agreement, the UK has provided a comprehensive and deep market access in 137 sub-sectors to Indian firms. On the Indian side, commitments have been extended in 108 sub-sectors, granting UK firms access to domains like accounting, auditing, financial services (with FDI capped at 74 per cent), telecom (100 per cent FDI allowed), environmental services, and auxiliary air transport services, it said.

Women candidates can use both maiden and married names on EVMs, says Maharashtra Election Commission

Pune: The State Election Commission (SEC) has allowed women candidates to display both their pre-marriage (maiden) and post-marriage names on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), provided they formally request it and meet the eligibility criteria, senior officials told TOI over the weekend. The directive, issued ahead of the upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra, is expected to benefit women known in public life by both names. But officials clarified that the name on the nomination form must match the name in the voters' list. Once the nomination is submitted, candidates may file an application with the returning officer requesting both names appear on the EVM. The application must be filed before the final date of withdrawal of candidature, the SEC stated. To support the request, candidates will need to submit a marriage certificate or a govt-issued gazette notification confirming the name change. In the absence of a gazette, one of 17 acceptable proofs — as prescribed by the SEC in a 2011 order — may be submitted. "Earlier, there were no clear guidelines and the recent SEC order will help the women candidates decide on the same," a senior official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Emergency Generators in Guro-dong: (Prices May Surprise You) Emergency Generator | Search Ads Search Now Undo "This move acknowledges identity transitions post-marriage while giving women the option to retain both identities during elections," another senior SEC official told TOI. However, the official added that both names will appear in full on the EVM only if space permits. Maharashtra has reserved 50% of seats for women in municipal corporations, councils, nagar panchayats, zilla parishads and panchayat samitis. Of these, over 1,370 seats in municipal corporations and 3,885 seats in councils and nagar panchayats have been set aside for women candidates. Civil society groups and political observers welcomed SEC's decision. "This is a progressive step. In many Maharashtrian households, a woman's name changes completely after marriage. Allowing both names helps her preserve her identity," said a political analyst. A former PMC corporator said it would help women who are known by their maiden names in the area, and putting both names would be an advantage for them. "Since the SEC has announced it much ahead of the actual polls, I would consider giving all the documents to ensure that both my maiden name and the name post-marriage is included," the former corporator told TOI. Maharashtra is set for one of the biggest rounds of local body elections, covering 29 municipal corporations, 244 municipal councils, 147 nagar panchayats, 32 zilla parishads, and 336 panchayat samitis.
