Former Melaka JBS director charged with submitting false claim, taking bribes

A former director of the Melaka Youth and Sports Department pleaded not guilty today in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court to submitting a false claim and accepting bribes.
MELAKA - A former director of the Melaka Youth and Sports Department pleaded not guilty today in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court to submitting a false claim and accepting bribes.
Khairul Adri Rosli, 51, is charged with submitting a payment voucher amounting to RM126,100 for the supply and installation of concrete imprint around the tennis and petanque court walkways at the Melaka Youth and Sports Complex, which was known to contain false particulars as the work was not carried out according to the quoted specifications.
He is alleged to have committed the offence at the Melaka Youth and Sports Department office on Dec 8, 2023.
The charge, under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act, provides a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
The accused also faces four charges of soliciting bribes totalling RM8,000 from a company owner linked to his official duties, between Sept 25, 2023 and June 25, 2024 in the Melaka Tengah district.
The charge, under Section 165 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Deputy Public Prosecutor from the MACC, Sharina Farhana Nor Sa'ari, proposed bail to be set at RM25,000 for all charges, with the additional conditions that the accused surrender his passport to the court and report monthly to the Melaka MACC office.
Khairul Adri's lawyer, T. Gajendran, asked for a lower bail amount, saying that his client is currently serving in a different department and will be suspended from duty starting today, receiving only half of his salary.
Judge Elesabet Paya Wan granted bail of RM20,000 with one surety for all charges.

MCMC probes viral video of 'influencers' giving scraps to homeless man
CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation following public complaints over a viral video showing a group of individuals, believed to be influencers, giving food scraps to a homeless person. In a statement Tuesday (Aug 5), MCMC said it took seriously the act of creating and disseminating content that exploited marginalised groups purely for cheap entertainment, generating views, and causing public distress. "The spread of content that degrades or humiliates individual dignity is not only unethical but also leads to the normalisation of inhumane culture within society. "The investigation into the content is being conducted under existing legal provisions, and stern action will be taken against any parties found guilty," the statement read. MCMC also reminded members of the public not to disseminate or upload any provocative content that could disrupt public order. ALSO READ: Trio get picked to pieces online for 'feeding leftovers' stunt It warned that any sharing of extremely offensive, false, or threatening content can result in action under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998, with offenders facing fines of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, if found guilty. "MCMC is committed and firm in ensuring that cyberspace is not misused, in line with efforts to uphold the rule of law and societal harmony," it added. It was earlier reported that several influencers had sparked public outrage after uploading a video that appeared to show them feeding "leftovers" to a homeless man. Following a wave of backlash from Internet users, the trio issued an apology in a separate video. They claimed the man had been informed about the filming beforehand and had consented to it. They also clarified that the chicken bones and rice were not intended as his actual meal. 'We had already given him a proper meal, including rice and two pieces of chicken, before filming,' they said. 'We hope Malaysians can forgive us. We are truly sorry.' The controversial video has since been removed from their social media platforms.

Kota Kinabalu: A 58-year-old man was fined a total of RM21,000 for two counts of using electricity that bypasses the meter terminals, causing the Sabah Electricity to undercharge and incur losses. Voo Hen Sang @ Tonny pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, to both charges against him, Monday. On the first count, Voo was fined RM1,000 or 14 days' jail for dishonestly using electricity through the installation of a black bypass cable connected to the terminal of meter number 99178340 on the red phase. On the second count, he was ordered to pay another RM20,000 fine or spend five months in prison for fraudulently using electricity through the installation of a blue bypass cable connected to the terminal of meter number 98992844 on the red and blue phases. The charges stated the offences committed by Voo had caused the Sabah Electricity to undercharge and incur losses. He committed the offences on Feb 24, this year, at 4.40pm and 8pm at Kg Kauluan in Tamparuli.
