Sam Altman and Jony Ive's $6.5B collab tanks Apple stock

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Apple chief designer Jony Ive announced their partnership on May 21, a deal both believe will bear revolutionary, AI-powered devices.
'We have the opportunity to completely reimagine what it means to use a computer,' Altman declared in a joint interview with Ive, who later said, 'I am absolutely certain that we are literally on the brink of a new generation of technology that can make us our better selves.'
Apple's shares fell 2.3% on the day of the announcement, extending their 17% decline year-to-date ahead of Wednesday's open in New York.
Altman and Ive plan to release a range of form factors (computer and phone) by the end of 2026, as well as a mystery, undisclosed design. Altman hinted that the two tech revolutionists 'Formed with the mission of figuring out how to create a family of devices that would let people use AI to create all sorts of wonderful things.'
The collaboration stems from OpenAI's $6.5 billion acquisition – the largest purchase in the company's history – of Ive's io, co-founded with former Apple executives Tang Tan, Scott Cannon, and Evans Hankey. Together, they assembled a 55-person team of world-leading hardware and software engineers, physicists, researchers, developers, and product manufacturing experts.
This acquire-hire gives Altman the expertise to challenge Apple's hardware market monopoly.
Ive's LoveFrom,, laden with ex-Apple employees like Bas Ording, Mike Matas, and Chris Wilson, is another addition to the deal. The collaborative design firm, which remains independent, boasting high-profile clients, such as Ferrari N.V. and Airbnb Inc, will assume design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI and io.
As Tim Cook navigates U.S. President Donald Trump's 25% tariff threat, Altman and Ive's partnership raises further concerns over Apple's future market dominance.
Amid a wave of high-level employee resignations, the second-largest company in the world has lagged behind in AI innovation, amplified by several development delays, including its most recent beta-embedded iOS 18.4 (which will include an AI-powered feature, Priority Notifications), initially scheduled to release in April 2025 before being postponed indefinably.
If there's anyone who can challenge Apple, it's Ive, a legendary tech designer Steve Jobs once referred to as his 'spiritual partner.' The British-born designer, responsible for the iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac, and Apple Watch, led Apple's design team for twenty-seven iconic years (1992-2019).
'I have a growing sense that everything I have learned over the last 30 years has led me to this place and to this moment,' Ive spoke on his new venture with Altman.
With a lineup of industry experts and former Apple veterans at Altman and Ive's disposal, the merger appears equipped to challenge Cook's market share. As Apple stalls in its AI push, OpenAI-io could well leapfrog ahead. Apple has, at best, a year to respond.

AI is transforming Tshwane's tourism industry

The unveiling of a WhatsApp chatbot, a new Artificial Intelligence-powered concierge designed by four visionary hoteliers, was at the heart of the annual general meeting of the Tshwane Tourism Association held on June 19 in Pretoria. 'Four hotel experts designed the chatbot for the hospitality industry to transform hospitality industry communication,' said chairperson Susan Marais. She explained the purpose was to bridge communication gaps, soften the formality of traditional reception, and offer guests 24-hour concierge service. According to her, the chatbot promises a sense of belonging, smoother guest experiences, and easier marketing by sending targeted emails and follow-ups, with early trials showing excellent feedback rates from WhatsApp interactions. Marais emphasised that AI could take a business in the hospitality industry to the next level. She sees the chatbot as not only a service enhancement but a strategic tool: 'It's a faster, friendlier way to reach guests, keep them informed, and give them that feeling of home'. Looking ahead to 2026, the association is mapping out an outstanding year with several aims, like strengthening safety structures, building on its existing Memorandum of Understanding with the metro and metro police to ensure tourists feel safe at all times. Marais is also looking towards leading the association to expand the grading of establishments to raise the benchmark across accommodation providers. This will support township tourism by spotlighting local cultural experiences and township-led tourism routes, and develop an urban heritage circuit. 'We want to design walkable and guided historic city routes with storytelling flair as well as improve connectivity and transport, forging partnerships with public and private transport players for better links between hotels, attractions, and transit hubs.' She noted that most of these initiatives are 'pretty well on track'. She stressed the importance of keeping hospitality training accessible. 'After Covid-19, training has become a luxury, but our focus must remain on this important aspect.' The year kicked off with the association's showcase event at the CSIR International Convention Centre, drawing 60 exhibitors and over 400 visitors. 'Old friendships were renewed, and new relationships and collaborations were forged,' said Marais. To her, the annual Official Tshwane Guide was a standout promotional tool in the past year. Over 6 000 copies were distributed in key airports, hotels, and lodges, helping tourists easily discover what Tshwane offers. The association is gearing up for its 25th anniversary edition of the guide in 2026. Marais explained the association tapped into university campuses to encourage tourism careers over the past year. 'We spoke to university students to get more students to study in the hospitality industry,' she said. 'This initiative supports long-term workforce development in Tshwane's tourism ecosystem.' In the past year, the association also strengthened its reach by networking with other tourism bodies across South Africa, and maintained safety sessions with the metro police and the service provider of a Tshwane safety app. She underlined these partnerships, noting that resident and visitor safety is critical and continuously improving. Reflecting on the year's successes and looking forward, she said: 'I cannot help but look back at the past 12 months as an absolute whirlwind. We cannot wait to share many of these new initiatives with our members throughout the year to come.' The Tshwane Tourism Awards 2025, scheduled for August 16 at Batter Boys Village, will recognise excellence across hospitality, events, sustainability, and innovation. R600bn Morocco-UK subsea power project rejected

Britain has rejected a £25bn (R613.76bn) Moroccan renewable energy project that would have used solar and wind power from the Sahara to supply up to 7-million UK homes. The British government, which is aiming to largely decarbonise its electricity sector by 2030, said on Thursday it believed domestic projects could offer better economic benefits. "The government has concluded that it is not in the UK national interest at this time to continue further consideration of support for the Morocco-UK Power Project," energy department minister Michael Shanks said in a written statement to parliament. He also said the project did not clearly align strategically with the government's mission to build homegrown power in the UK. Xlinks' Morocco-UK power project would have tapped Moroccan renewable energy via what would have been the world's longest subsea power cable. The plan involved building 3,800km of high-voltage direct current subsea cables from Morocco to southwest England.

Elon Musk is coming for your hashtags on X

South Africa-born Elon Musk, billionaire CEO of X (formerly Twitter), has made another bold move in his ongoing campaign to reinvent the platform – this time by banning hashtags in adverts , effective TODAY . Calling them an 'esthetic nightmare,' Musk says the decision is part of a broader push for cleaner, sleeker ad visuals on the platform. The announcement marks yet another step away from the traditional elements that have defined social media for nearly two decades. Once the cornerstone of online engagement, hashtags have helped users discover trends, rally around causes, and boost visibility for content since their birth in 2007. Campaigns like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo became global movements because of them. But Musk believes those days are over. In his view, hashtags clutter ads and disrupt the user experience. 'They're ugly. AI can do better,' he previously tweeted in late 2024. That's a reference to Grok, the AI-driven recommendation engine Musk launched to replace hashtags as the backbone of trend detection and content discovery. According to Musk, Grok is now smart enough to understand context, intent, and virality without needing hashtags. He claims the platform doesn't require them anymore to group related posts or spotlight popular conversations. Not surprisingly, reactions have been mixed. Some users welcomed the minimalist aesthetic, but others were quick to point out the platform's more pressing flaws: 'Fix the bots first.' 'Scrolling bugs make the app unusable.' 'Hashtags at least helped me find stuff I care about.' Meanwhile, advertisers are left scrambling. Many brands rely on hashtags to tie their campaigns to broader conversations – think #SuperBowlAds or #iPhoneLaunch . Without them, real-time engagement strategies may need a complete rethink. This isn't just a design decision – it's a philosophical shift. Musk's vision for X is increasingly driven by AI. He sees hashtags as outdated relics of the pre-AI internet, no longer necessary in a world where machine learning can detect trends, group topics, and serve recommendations automatically. The risk? Losing the user agency that hashtags provide. Hashtags allowed individuals – not algorithms – to define what was important. Now, it may be up to Grok to decide. For now, the ban only applies to paid advertisements, but many suspect a wider purge is on the horizon. If hashtags are officially deprecated across the platform, it could mark the end of an era. The irony? The backlash is already trending – and yes, it includes posts with #SaveTheHashtag . Whether or not the hashtag survives, the move signals another chapter in Elon Musk's reimagining of social media – one where AI, not people, shapes how conversations are discovered and connected.
