CID submits closure report in 2024 Suraj Revanna case

Hindustan Times2 days ago

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has submitted a closure report in the unnatural sexual assault case lodged against JD(S) MLC Suraj Revanna, citing a lack of evidence. CID submits closure report in 2024 Suraj Revanna case
Suraj, grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and son of senior JD(S) leader HD Revanna, was accused of sexually assaulting a 27-year-old JD(S) party worker, Chetan KS, at his farmhouse in Ghannikad, Holenarasipur taluk, on June 16, 2024. The case was filed at Holenarasipur police station under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other charges.
Given the sensitive nature of the allegations and the political profile of those involved, the state government handed over the investigation to the CID. The agency conducted a detailed probe involving witness testimony, forensic evidence collection, and analysis of technical inputs. According to officials, the inquiry did not yield any concrete evidence to support the charges. The report was submitted to the special court on Wednesday.
'We have concluded there was insufficient evidence and filed a 'B report', which is typically submitted when a case lacks prima facie evidence,' CID deputy SP and investigating officer B Umesh told the Special Court for People's Representatives on Wednesday. 'The special court will now decide whether to accept the report. The complainant retains the right to file objections,' he added.
The allegations came at a politically vulnerable time for the Revanna family. Suraj's father, HD Revanna, and brother, Prajwal Revanna, then JD(S) MP, are facing separate legal challenges. Moreover, opposition parties seized upon the assault case to question the JD(S) leadership's integrity.
Further complicating the case, Suraj Revanna's aide Shivakumar filed a counter-complaint, accusing the original complainant of trying to extort ₹ 5 crore in exchange for withdrawing the charges.
Though a court decision on the report is still pending, the CID's findings may help Suraj Revanna navigate immediate legal threats.

ED attaches Mahira Group assets worth ₹557 cr in money laundering case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached assets worth approximately Rs 557.43 crore in connection with a money laundering case against the Mahira Infratech Pvt Ltd (formerly M/s Sai Aina Farms Pvt Ltd) M/s Mahira Buildtech Pvt Ltd, and M/s Czar Buildwell Pvt Ltd. According to an official release, the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) of 2002 attached assets, including seven immovable properties, comprising around 35 acres of residential and commercial land, located in Gurugram's Sector 68, 63A, 103, 104, 92, 88B, and 95. Additionally, Fixed Deposit Receipts (FDRs) amounting to around Rs 97 lakh, belonging to various companies, have also been attached. The ED initiated the probe based on FIRs filed by Gurugram Police against Sai Aaina Farms Pvt. Ltd. and others under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to cheating and forgery . As per the release, the companies allegedly submitted forged documents, including fake bank guarantees, to obtain licenses for internal and external development works connected to affordable housing projects in Sectors 68, 103, and 104 of Gurugram. Over Rs 616 crore was collected from nearly 3,700 homebuyers, but the promised homes were not delivered, and the funds were allegedly misappropriated. The ED investigation revealed that the company siphoned off funds by inflating construction costs through fake invoices issued by associated entities. The money was diverted for personal gains by the company's directors and promoters, and sums from home buyers were transferred as loans to other group entities, which remain unpaid for years. On February 15, 2024, and March 26, 2025, the ED had attached properties worth Rs 81.07 crore linked to M/s Sai Aaina Farms Pvt. Ltd., M/s Mahira Buildtech Pvt. Ltd., M/s D S Home Construction Pvt. Ltd., Sikandar Singh, Dharam Singh Chhoker (ex-MLA), Vikas Chhoker, and related companies involved in the case. Sikandar Singh, a promoter of the Mahira Group, was arrested on April 30, 2024. A prosecution complaint has been filed, and the Special Court in Gurugram has taken cognisance of the same. Another key accused, Dharam Singh Chhoker, who had evaded arrest for over a year despite six non-bailable warrants, was arrested on May 5. Vikas Chhoker remains absconding, and a proclamation has been issued against him by the Special Court in Gurugram. Further investigation is underway.

Punjab CM announces legislation to ensure harsher punishment for sacrilege of holy granths

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Saturday announced that the state government will introduce legislation to ensure harsher punishment for acts of sacrilege against religious scriptures or holy granths. Chairing a meeting with officers and representatives of the Sarb Dharam Beadbi Rokko Kanoon Morcha at his official residence, the Chief Minister (CM) said that Punjab is a 'sacred land' of great gurus, saints, and seers who have shown the path of 'mutual love and tolerance'. He emphasised that it is a matter of immense pride that Punjab stands as a 'unique blend of socialism and secularism, as well as an epitome of communal harmony, peace, and brotherhood'. Mann reiterated that the state government is firmly committed to ensuring 'exemplary punishment' for the perpetrators of sacrilege incidents. Mann's announcement came even as two of the state's Bills on sacrilege are pending with the Centre. These two Bills were passed by Punjab Assembly in 2018, under former CM Amarinder Singh. The Centre had termed Punjab's amendments to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to give life imprisonment to sacrilege accused as a 'harsher punishment'. Mann had written to Union Home Ainister Amit Shah in 2023 for getting the President's assent on the two Bills. The Chief Minister stated that the government would consult leading legal experts to ensure that a robust state legislation is enacted — one that prevents offenders from evading strict consequences, including the possibility of capital punishment for such heinous crimes. He expressed concern over existing legal loopholes that allow individuals guilty of such unpardonable acts to walk free, calling it completely unwarranted and unacceptable. Reaffirming his government's commitment to justice, the CM stated that every person involved in these sacrilegious acts, either directly or indirectly, will face exemplary punishment. Mann said that it is the 'bounden duty' of the state government to ensure that these 'dreaded criminals' are held accountable for their actions. He said that the state government would consult all stakeholders, including religious organisations, in drafting the legislation. The CM highlighted that while the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provides clear provisions regarding religious places, it remains silent on holy granths. However, he said that as the subject falls under the Concurrent List, the state has the authority to enact such legislation, and legal opinions will be sought accordingly. Mann said that this process will be completed shortly to assuage the sentiments of the general public and very soon a Cabinet meeting will be convened on the issue.
