Assam: 38 more arrested after communal violence in Dhubri
The tensions had erupted after the remains of an animal were discovered near a Hindu temple.
The arrested individuals have been booked under non-bailable offences, India Today NE reported on Saturday.
The arrests were in addition to the 22 persons the police on Friday confirmed to have held.
Sarma had told reporters on Friday that he visited the area to review the situation and had issued shoot-at-sight orders for nighttime.
'Whoever will create disturbance, we will shoot them,' he had said, adding that the Rapid Action Force and the Central Reserve Police Force had been deployed in Dhubri.
The chief minister also claimed that the animal remains found near the temple were part of the head of a cow.
'The day after Bakri Eid [on June 8], some persons kept a severed cow head in front of a Hanuman temple,' claimed Sarma. 'Representatives of both the communities met thereafter, a peace committee meeting was held and the conflict seemed to have been resolved.'
The chief minister claimed that the next day, another severed animal head was found in front of the temple premises, which sparked violence.
Widespread protests broke out in Dhubri on June 8 morning, with a large number of residents blocking a road adjacent to the temple. They shouted slogans and burnt tyres as part of their demonstration.
They also prevented the police from removing the remains of the animal, insisting that it must remain untouched until 'those responsible are identified and arrested'.
As the demonstrations continued till Monday, Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath issued orders prohibiting five or more persons from gathering in Dhubri town. The administration had also banned rallies, processions, meetings and demonstrations.
The situation was brought under control by Tuesday and the prohibitory orders were withdrawn.
On Friday, the chief minister claimed that a day before Bakri Eid, which was celebrated on June 7, a poster showing Dhubri to be part of Bangladesh was found in the town. Sarma alleged that a group was attempting to spread tensions in the area.
Dhubri shares a border with Bangladesh.
The Bharatiya Janata Party leader had said on June 8 that 16 persons were arrested in the state for allegedly slaughtering cattle illegally on Bakri Eid.

Following his death, a prohibitory order under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita was imposed in the area for five days. A case was first registered at the Bajpe Police Station, but chorus soon grew seeking an NIA investigation. The probe agency took over the case later in June and has been investigating ever since. While multiple locations have been raided, further investigation into the case is still underway.

NIA Raids 14 Locations In Karnataka In Hindu Activist Suhas Shetty Murder Case
The sleuths of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are conducting simultaneous raids at 14 locations on Saturday across Mangaluru district in connection with Hindu activist and rowdy sheeter Sushas Shetty murder case. Sources confirmed that the raids are being conducted at 10 locations in Bajpe and four locations in Suathkal towns. The raids are underway at many residences and offices at these locations. The authorities are conducting a search of the properties and verifying documents. The murder case of Sushas Shetty has triggered revenge killings and a series of stabbing incidents in the coastal region, and communal tension threatened to spread to other regions of the state. The Karnataka Police had arrested 12 accused persons in connection with the case. Following the demand by BJP leaders and Union Ministers from the state, the Centre has handed over the probe to the NIA. The BJP has alleged a foreign hand and the role of the banned PFI outfit behind the murder. The parents of Suhas Shetty have also emphasised that only the NIA probe could give them justice in the case. Hindu activist Suhas Shetty was hacked to death on May 1 by a gang using machetes and swords. The killers who came in two vehicles had attacked him while he was travelling in his car with associates in the limits of the Bajpe police station. The shocking video of the killing had raised concerns. Suhas Shetty was a Bajrang Dal activist and the prime accused in the murder of Mohammad Fazil, a resident of Suratkal. Shetty and his associates had allegedly killed Fazil at a public place on July 28, 2022, in retaliation for the murder of BJP activist Praveen Kumar Nettaru. Nettaru, a BJP worker from the same communally sensitive region, was hacked to death during the height of the 'hijab' row. The incident occurred in Bellare near Sullia in the Dakshina Kannada district. Nataru's murder had triggered revenge killings and a spate of stabbing incidents across the state. Suhas Shetty had come out of prison on bail in the murder case of Fazil. Weeks after the killing of Suhas Shetty, a 42-year-old Imtiyaz, a pickup driver and secretary of a local mosque, was hacked to death in broad daylight near Ira Kodi in Bantwal taluk in Mangaluru as revenge for Suhas Shetty's murder.

Last Updated: The court, in its deliberation, found significant credibility in Milind Joshirao's allegations, saying he was 'forced to give the statement', thereby rendering it involuntary In a critical revelation from the NIA special court's order in the 2008 Malegaon blast case seen by CNN-News18, the testimony of witness PW-220, identified as Milind Joshirao of Abhinav Bharat, has cast a significant shadow over the initial investigation conducted by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Joshirao told the court that ATS officials subjected him to coercion, pressuring him to falsely implicate prominent right-wing figures, including Yogi Adityanath, Indresh Kumar, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, Kakaji, Aseemanand, and Professor Deodhar, in connection with the case. According to Joshirao's detailed testimony, he was held in ATS custody from October 28, 2008, to November 7, 2008, a period exceeding the legal limit of seven days. During this 'illegal detention" at the ATS office, he alleged that officers repeatedly told him he would be released if he named these five specific individuals. However, Joshirao steadfastly refused to comply with their demands. During his interrogation, the ATS's efforts to extract concrete information about a purported 'Raigad meeting"—where an oath was allegedly taken to establish a 'Hindu nation"—proved unfruitful. Despite this, the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) sought and received permission from the court for a cross-examination of Joshirao. Yet, even under cross-examination, his statement failed to yield any information that would support the prosecution's narrative. Joshirao unequivocally denied having participated in any such meeting or that such an oath-taking event had ever occurred at Raigad Fort. On the contrary, Joshirao levelled serious accusations against the ATS, asserting that he was treated like an accused person and forcibly kept at their office for the duration of his illegal custody. He specifically named DCP Shrirao and ACP Parambir Singh, alleging that they intimidated him and threatened torture to compel him into giving false statements. Furthermore, Joshirao emphatically denied confessing to the statement that ATS had recorded in his name, maintaining that the entire statement was fabricated and written by ATS officers on their own accord. The court, in its deliberation, found significant credibility in Joshirao's allegations. It concluded that his statement made it 'clear" that he was 'forced to give the statement", thereby rendering it involuntary.
