India risk 'losing Jasprit Bumrah forever' if he plays Edgbaston Test: 'He has a young family. If you break him...'
Do you think the Indian team management had made the decision which Tests Jasprit Bumrah was going to play and which ones he'll skip, even before they landed in England? Because this is where the grey area can start. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has come out and said that they are going to monitor his workload, but a premature decision may not be the best way forward for Team India. India have lost the first Test; emotions can get involved. "Should we play him? Should we not? Can we afford to go 0-2 down?" are some of the questions surrounding the Indian think tank at the moment.
Despite the hoopla of workload management, a whopping fact emerged during the 1st Test between Australia and the West Indies last week. Bumrah has bowled the most number of overs in Test cricket since 2024. He has sent down 410.4 overs, followed by Mitchell Starc at second with 362.3 overs. Pat Cummins has bowled 359.1, Mohammed Siraj 355.3 and Gus Atkinson 328. Where is the management?
"So they are managing his workload. But did you see that stat pop up? He has bowled the most amount of overs than any quick since 2024 in Test cricket," former Australia captain Alyssa Healy wondered on LiSTNR Sport podcast.
"He has already had that surgery. And he's still having issues. As a human being that is worrying. He's got a life to live, he's got a young family and if you can't take part in normal life. If you undo that surgery by breaking him again, you've lost him forever. So that's where his workload is actually important. You saw him walk off at SCG. He knew. He was bowling fine but he knew his back was cooked. I just think they are going to play him – they need to win it and get some momentum back. But it's who you're putting around him to compliment him so that he doesn't need to do all the work is the more important question." Why Healy makes sense?
Healy makes a staggering point. Yes, Bumrah is important. But is it worth taking the risk? India have a long Test season ahead, during which they will play series at home and abroad. Besides, Bumrah is a key factor in India's T20 World Cup defence next year and the 2027 World Cup 2027. As Healy pointed out, in 2022, Bumrah underwent back surgery, which kept him out of action for over a year. When he returned, he was a beast, bowling better than ever before. But despite going under the knife, Bumrah is not bulletproof – the back injury he sustained in Australia is an example – and hence, preserving him is their biggest hope.
If he plays the Edgbaston Test, which again could last all five days, given the nature of the pitch, Bumrah risks injuring himself again. Either Bumrah skips the Lord's Test, which no player in their right mind would want to miss, or he sits out the one starting tomorrow. No way he's playing both this and the next one.

2nd Test: Jaiswal makes 87, Gill unbeaten on 42 as India reach 182/3 at tea
Birmingham: Yashasvi Jaiswal's promising knock ended in him making 87 while captain Shubman Gill showed enormous patience to be unbeaten on 42 as India reached 182/3 in 53 overs at tea on day one of second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test against England at Edgbaston on Wednesday. It was a session where old-fashioned attritional cricket took centrestage, as India made 84 runs in 28 overs. Though Jaiswal fell 13 runs short of his sixth Test hundred, Gill continued to hold fort in his unbeaten 109-ball knock laced with just three boundaries. With Rishabh Pant unbeaten on 14 off 28 balls, India will look to pile more runs, as another session of toil awaits England's bowlers. The second session began with Gill and Jaiswal picking up singles whenever an opportunity came. While Jaiswal got a boundary by slicing over the slips, Gill got his boundaries off edges through gully twice, while being severely tested on playing around his front pad. Woakes continues to test Gill around the middle stump line in the hope of getting him playing across his front pad, but the Indian skipper, batting outside the crease, handled it well with his sturdy forward defence. With Tongue and Bashir coming in, Jaiswal and Gill got a four each as they brought up the fifty-run partnership. But Stokes once again pulled a rabbit out of a hat to get England a vital breakthrough, as Jaiswal tried to cut one away outside off and got a thin edge behind to keeper Jamie Smith, with the England skipper ecstatic in his celebration. While Gill continued to be happy in getting singles on both sides of the wicket, Pant took his time and respected some good bowling coming his way before dancing down the pitch to smack a half-volley from Bashir over long-on for six. The duo knocked off singles in the last two overs before tea break arrived. Brief Scores: India 182/3 in 53 overs (Yashasvi Jaiswal 87, Shubman Gill 42 not out. Rishabh Pant 14*; Brydon Carse 1-26, Ben Stokes 1-33) against England

If Bumrah was fit to play then surely you need to pick the best bowler in the world, says Finch
New Delhi: Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has voiced his disbelief over India's decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test at Edgbaston, questioning the wisdom of leaving out the world's premier fast bowler in a crucial contest. With India trailing 0-1 in the five-match Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy series, the absence of Bumrah, who has been the leader of India's bowling attack, has sparked debate among experts and fans alike. 'If Bumrah was fit to play then surely you need to pick the best bowler in the world?' Finch posted on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the toss. 'At the very least Kuldeep has to be in the XI if you're worried about taking 20 wickets. Yes, he might be more expensive but he's the next best attacking option!' India captain Shubman Gill revealed at the toss that Bumrah's exclusion was a workload management decision, with the management opting to preserve him for the Lord's Test, where they feel the conditions will suit him better. Akash Deep was brought in as Bumrah's replacement to make his Test debut. India made two other changes, with Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy coming in for B Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur, thereby adding depth to the batting line-up but arguably weakening the bowling unit. The decision, however, has raised eyebrows beyond Finch. Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad expressed surprise at seeing India take the field without their most potent weapon, especially after Bumrah's fine display in Leeds. 'A week is a very good time off for a fast bowler. (Bumrah's omission) does surprise me and what also surprised me was him saying before the series he will only play three of the five Tests. You keep those cards close to your chest and play each week as it comes. They will definitely want Bumrah at Lord's because of the movement you can get through the air, so can they risk him here?" he said.

Ankeet Chavan to coach Mumbai Under-14; Omkar Salvi retained as Ranji coach
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has appointed former left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan as head coach of Mumbai Under-14 team. Chavan was one of the three Rajasthan Royals players who was banned for life for the alleged spot-fixing in 2013. They were allowed to resume their competitive cricket two years ago after the Indian cricket board had reduced their ban to seven years. Chavan continued to play club cricket in Mumbai for Karnataka Sports Club and later cleared his Level-1 exam as for coaching. 'I'm looking forward to it (on his new assignment). It's a second innings for me and there is always a turn around. I really want to thank MCA for showing faith in me. Coaching was certainly on my mind and I know what challenges it has going ahead. As it's Under-14 cricket I want to work on the basics of players and show them the path so that they can improve their game,' Chavan told The Indian Express. In 2013, the BCCI disciplinary committee had found S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Chavan guilty of spot-fixing in the IPL and had handed them life bans. However in 2015, a Delhi trial court dropped all charges against these players for lack of evidence. However, the BCCI continued to impose a life ban. In June 2021, the BCCI reduced the ban of all cricketers involved in spot fixing scandal to seven years. Chavan played 18 First-Class matches and 20 List A games apart from 13 IPL matches. The MCA announced its appointments of coaches and selectors across age group cricket on Wednesday. The MCA has decided to retain its head coach of the Ranji Trophy team Omkar Salvi for next domestic season. MCA president Ajinkya Naik in a statement said, 'His (Salvi) outstanding leadership and coaching over the past two seasons have played a vital role in the team's strong performances. His ability to bring out the best in players has been exceptional.' On the back of his Ranji Trohpy show, Salvi was appointed as bowling coach of Royal Challengers of Bangalore last season. Sandip Patil will also continue as the chairman of the selection committee.
