Karnataka: AICC asks CM to take up fresh caste survey, complete in set timeline

since the data gathered is about 10 years old, while agreeing 'in principle' the state's caste census exercise and throwing the party's weight behind it.
AICC general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal told media that the party has suggested to the CM to do a 're-enumeration' of castes as sections of communities have cast doubts over the counts, and the party too felt the data itself was 10-year-old. The party has left it to the state government to work out on finer details such as the stipulated period in which the exercise must be completed.
The CM has convened a special
Cabinet
meeting on June 12 to discuss the caste census exercise. The AICC leadership has pushed the Siddaramaiah government to model the upcoming census on the lines of socio-economic, education, employment, political and caste (SEEEPC) survey the Congress regime in Telangana conducted.

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said the party leadership has vetted the inputs given by ministers and community leaders and religious mutt heads and told the government to ensure fairness to all communities. The government will deploy officials who will visit every household and gather data. The CM will decide on a timeline for completion.
A few ministers representing the dominant Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities had conveyed in an earlier Cabinet meeting that the sub-caste wise dissection, they said, had suggested a sharp drop in the population of their communities while the reality was otherwise. They had been upset that the enumerators had shown the entire Muslim population as one combined community without a sub-caste wise slicing, a treatment denied to other dominant communities.
Lingayat Ministers
from North Karnataka MB Patil and Laxmi Hebbalkar have openly disagreed with the numbers of the earlier survey. Lingayats population, Patil had said, was more than 10 million in the state, far higher than what the report had indicated. In November 2023, Dy CM DK Shivakumar and his cabinet colleague N Cheluvarayaswamy signed a petition urging the CM not to accept the caste census report.

Rs 103 crore grant for renovation and development of Kempe Gowda fort in Magadi: DCM Shivakumar
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar today informed that the Cabinet has approved a Rs 237 crore project to supply treated water from Bengaluru to 164 tanks in Shidlaghatta and Chinthamani taluks. 'Treated water will be supplied to 45 tanks in Shidlaghatta taluk and 119 tanks in Chinthamani taluk from the second phase of Hebbal-Nagavara valley. A Rs 36 crore project to build a new tank in Chinthamani taluk has also been approved,' he said while addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting. 'The Cabinet has also approved a project to renovate and develop the fort built by Kempegowda in Magadi taluk at a cost of Rs 103 crore. Administrative approval has been given by the Irrigation department to build a reservoir at Mallamma valley. The Cabinet also resolved to seek a no objection certificate from the Union Home Ministry to rename Bagepalli as Bagya Nagara,' he said. 'A Cabinet Sub-committee has been formed under the leadership of Law minister to study the report on mining irregularities carried out by the Lokayukta SIT. There were many lacunae in the previous Sub-committee report and hence a new Sub-committee has been formed to work out ways and means to conserve state's mineral wealth,' he added. Sanjeev Arora to be inducted into Punjab Cabinet Thursday
Newly elected Ludhiana West MLA Sanjeev Arora will take oath as minister in Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's cabinet on Thursday, it is learnt. Governor Gulab Chand Kataria will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Arora at 1 pm in a brief ceremony at the Raj Bhawan. AAP leader and industrialist, Arora, resigned from the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. He submitted his resignation to Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who accepted it. Arora, a first-time MP, was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab on April 10, 2022, and his tenure was to end on April 9, 2028. With his induction into the Cabinet, Mann will have 17 ministers, including himself. As per rules, Mann can have 18 ministers, including himself, but he is likely to keep a berth vacant. In the run-up to the by-election, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal had announced that Arora would be made a minister after his victory. Sources said the party wanted to fill all Cabinet berths, but with the by-election necessitated in Taran Tarn after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal last week, the party decided to fill only one seat and leave another vacant. 'A Cabinet berth has been kept vacant so that the party can promise the electorates of Tarn Taran that if they elect the AAP candidate, their representative will be inducted into the Cabinet,' a party leader said.
