Technical evidence supports the victim's statement in the Kolkata gang rape case. Protests erupted citywide. The investigation progresses with more personnel.
Kolkata gang rape case of 24-year-old law student has taken a significant turn as technical evidence, including CCTV footage and call data records, has been analysed and found to corroborate the victim's statement. The investigation team is now gearing up to interrogate students to further verify the facts of the incident.
According to the police, the vice principal of the institution has confirmed that none of the accused persons had access to the CCTV feeds, which suggests that the footage has not been tampered with.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, people from diverse backgrounds united in solidarity, participating in protests against the gang rape of a law college student in Kolkata. Demonstrations took place outside South Calcutta Law College, the alleged crime scene, and Kasba Police Station, where the First Information Report (FIR) was filed.
Protests spread to different parts of the city by evening, including Jadavpur, Rashbehari, and Harzra. Supporters of 'Abhaya Mancha" a group created after rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital and Medical College on August 9, 2024, participated in the protests, along with students and the elderly.
The investigation into the incident has seen significant progress, with the medico-legal examination and the survivor's statement under Section 183 of BNSS being completed. To expedite the probe, the Kolkata Police has bolstered the Special Investigation Team by increasing its personnel to nine officers.
The protests on Sunday brought back memories of the massive protests after the horrific crime at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last year.
'Yesterday, till midnight, I spoke to the victim's parents. I told them I would come and meet them. They were very tense and wanted cooperation. Today in the morning, when we tried to reach them, they did not pick up the phone. When I asked the police, they said they don't know. When I asked SP Bauruipur, he said their house was under lock and key," she said.
'I visited, and they cooperated, but the pace of occurrence was sealed; they did not allow me to record. They said if we record, they will seize it. How is that possible? I'm going to Delhi and will discuss and give a report. We are disappointed," she added.
The police have arrested three people, including the main accused, in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student inside the college campus on Wednesday, June 25. A five-member special team has also been constituted to probe the incident.

Kolkata Gang Rape Accused To Be Produced In Court Today, Cops May Seek Extension Of Custody

Last Updated: Though the accused continue to deny allegations, police sources say that the evidence and witness statements collected so far substantiate the victim's complaint The four accused in the South Calcutta Law College gang rape case will be produced in court on Tuesday and police are likely to seek an extension of their custody. The Commissioner of Police visited Kasba Police Station on Monday to review the progress of the investigation in the case that has once again brought the spotlight on crimes against women in the city. The commissioner held a two-hour meeting with officers of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and issued detailed guidelines on how the investigation should proceed, sources told CNN-News18. The development comes after the 24-year-old law student accused three people— alumnus Monojit Mishra and current students Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed—of sexually assaulting her in the college security guard's room on June 25. The fourth accused, the security guard, was taken into custody on Saturday. The college has been closed indefinitely for now. So far, the survivor has been taken to the scene of the crime, where she described the events of that day. Her statement has also been recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 and she has undergone medical examination twice. The clothes worn by both the accused and the survivor on the day of the incident have been collected as evidence. Police sources say the woman's complaint is being substantiated by the evidence collected so far. In her complaint, the survivor alleged that the prime accused filmed her and blackmailed her with the video. The accused's mobile phone has been recovered, and it contains the video, corroborating her allegations. Additionally, CCTV footage from June 25 clearly shows that the woman was prevented from leaving the premises. Police sources also say that the survivor had written in her complaint that she had asked for an inhaler as she was feeling breathless. Investigation has confirmed this after police spoke to the medical shop owner. Police have started questioning students who were present in college that day. Though the accused continue to deny allegations, police sources say that the evidence and witness statements collected so far substantiate the victim's complaint. First Published:

Molestation, Theft, Assault: Criminal Cases Against Kolkata Rape Accused Manojit Mishra Revealed

Last Updated: Manojit Mishra, the main accused in the Kolkata law college gangrape case, has a long history of criminal complaints, including assault, molestation, theft, and vandalism. Hours after it was known that Kolkata rape accused Manojit Mishra had earlier attempted to murder a student and had thrashed a cop, several other cases that were earlier registered against him have come to the fore. The list of other cases against the prime accused in the Kolkata law college gangrape case suggests that he has been a repeat offender. In 2017, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Mishra was assaulting and threatening a person. In July 2019, a complaint was lodged against him at the Gariahat Police Station in Kolkata, accusing him of tearing off a female student's clothes at the South Kolkata Law College. On December 31, 2019, Mishra, after attending a party at a friend's house, had allegedly stolen a music system and some expensive items. A complaint in this regard against him was lodged at the Haridevpur Police Station. In 2022, a woman from Kolkata's Swinhoe Street had filed a molestation complaint against Manojit Mishra at the Kasba Police Station. In 2024, he was accused of assaulting a college guard and was also accused of vandalism on the college campus, according to a police complaint. In 2025, another complaint against him mentioned that he had thrashed a cop. In the latest, the DNA samples of the three accused in the Kolkata law college gang rape case were collected on Monday as a part of the investigation of the crime. The police also suspect that the torture of the 24-year-old woman was pre-planned. The three arrested accused – alumnus Monojit Mishra and current students Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed – were taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where their body fluid, urine and hair samples were collected for forensic examination. The first-year student of South Calcutta Law College in the city's Kasba area was gang-raped allegedly by the three on the evening of June 25. A team of doctors extracted the samples from the accused, and the process lasted for nearly eight hours and were sent to the forensic examination. Sleuths of a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) have prepared a list of over 25 people, mostly students of South Calcutta Law College, who were present at the institution on June 25. Meanwhile, the state education department on Monday recommended the suspension of Mishra from the position he was holding as a contractual employee of the South Calcutta Law College.
