Kolkata Gang Rape Accused To Be Produced In Court Today, Cops May Seek Extension Of Custody
Though the accused continue to deny allegations, police sources say that the evidence and witness statements collected so far substantiate the victim's complaint
The four accused in the South Calcutta Law College gang rape case will be produced in court on Tuesday and police are likely to seek an extension of their custody.
The Commissioner of Police visited Kasba Police Station on Monday to review the progress of the investigation in the case that has once again brought the spotlight on crimes against women in the city. The commissioner held a two-hour meeting with officers of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and issued detailed guidelines on how the investigation should proceed, sources told CNN-News18.
The development comes after the 24-year-old law student accused three people— alumnus Monojit Mishra and current students Pratim Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed—of sexually assaulting her in the college security guard's room on June 25. The fourth accused, the security guard, was taken into custody on Saturday. The college has been closed indefinitely for now.
So far, the survivor has been taken to the scene of the crime, where she described the events of that day. Her statement has also been recorded before a magistrate under Section 164 and she has undergone medical examination twice. The clothes worn by both the accused and the survivor on the day of the incident have been collected as evidence.
Police sources say the woman's complaint is being substantiated by the evidence collected so far. In her complaint, the survivor alleged that the prime accused filmed her and blackmailed her with the video. The accused's mobile phone has been recovered, and it contains the video, corroborating her allegations.
Additionally, CCTV footage from June 25 clearly shows that the woman was prevented from leaving the premises. Police sources also say that the survivor had written in her complaint that she had asked for an inhaler as she was feeling breathless. Investigation has confirmed this after police spoke to the medical shop owner.
Police have started questioning students who were present in college that day. Though the accused continue to deny allegations, police sources say that the evidence and witness statements collected so far substantiate the victim's complaint.

The brutality continued for 40 minutes until someone knocked on the door, and he was forced to open it. As he left, I ran downstairs, washed off the blood and went and sat on a bench. My ear was still bleeding, but I covered it with my hair. Just then, he again came up to me and groped me from behind, but I managed to escape. The torment continued till 6.30 pm. My batchmates and seniors sensed my discomfort, and after I confided in them, they asked me to lodge a complaint. I decided to lodge a complaint with the college authorities and police the very next day. But Monojit's gang called me to the union room and told me, "Dada has a lot of power. It will take just one minute to finish off your family. You live so far from home—if someone throws acid on you, you might not even survive. " They seemed to have gathered information on my family and I was too scared to go to police. Monojit's gang would call me up on WhatsApp after midnight to threaten and abuse me. Eventually, the frequency of the calls subsided, but the memory of it all kept haunting me. The trauma was such that I could not attend classes for one-and-a-half months. Raj govt stands by SI recruitment exam, refuses to cancel it
1 2 Jaipur: In a decisive move, the state govt informed the Rajasthan High Court Tuesday it would not cancel the controversial 2021 sub-inspector recruitment examination, despite allegations of paper leaks and use of dummy candidates. After months of protests for and against the demand to cancel the exam as well as the court's directives for administrative clarity in the matter, the state govt finally made its stand clear during the hearing before the single bench of Justice Sameer Jain. Advocate general Rajendra Prasad, representing the state govt, said, "The decision to continue with the recruitment process is based on recommendations by a cabinet sub-committee which met on June 28 and subsequently approved by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma." Prasad informed the court that just 53 candidates out of the 838 selected (6.3%) were found to be involved in exam malpractices. "These tainted candidates have already been terminated or suspended from the police service," he said. Additional advocate general Vigyan Shah outlined four key recommendations made by the committee, including continued investigation by the special investigation team (SIT) and debarment of any tainted candidates discovered in the future. "The committee has also recommended age relaxation for candidates in upcoming SI recruitment exams," said Shah. "With any decision in the matter, a situation should not arise where we cannot differentiate between right and wrong in the recruitment process," he added. Senior advocate RN Mathur, representing the selected candidates, supported the govt's decision, arguing that cancelling the entire recruitment process would unfairly punish innocent candidates for the actions of a few tainted ones. "The state govt's decision is fair. If the recruitment is cancelled, everyone will have to bear the brunt of the mistake of a few people," said Mathur. The govt decision was opposed by lawyers of petitioners seeking cancellation of the exam. Senior advocate Major RP Singh and advocate Harendra Neel, on behalf of the petitioners, pointed out that the same sub-committee had previously recommended cancellation of the recruitment process. "When the same sub-committee can make two different recommendations, then the high court also has the right to do a judicial review of the govt decision," said Singh. The high court has scheduled the final hearing of the matter for July 7, when a definitive decision is expected to be reached on this contentious case. Rape accused should be hanged, says law college vice-principal after GB meeting
1 2 Kolkata: The vice-principal of the law college where a first-year student was gang raped said the perpetrators should be hanged even as the governing body expelled Monojit Mishra and decided to appeal to the bar council for the cancellation of his licence to practice in court. "The rapists should be hanged for committing such a heinous crime on the college premises," Nayna Chatterjee, the vice-principal of the law college said after the governing body meeting on Tuesday. The meeting had been convened following a nudge from the higher education department to discuss issues that have come to the fore in the wake of the incident. The governing body expelled the key accused, Mishra, who was working as a casual staff member at the college since last year. He will also be asked to return the money that he had been paid by the college. Pramit Mukherjee and Zaib Ahmed — the other two accused — were barred from the campus and won't be able to get admission to any institute in Bengal. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has been formed following the Vishakha guidelines.
