Rod Stewart's Glastonbury performance from overheating to missing act

Daily Recorda day ago
Sir Rod played at the Somerset festival on Sunday afternoon.
Sir Rod Stewart performed at Glastonbury Festival yesterday afternoon and certainly put on a show during the Legends slot as he welcomed various different guests on stage. Mick Hucknall, Ronnie Wood and Lulu joined him for an exciting set which included some of his biggest songs such as Maggie May, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy and Sailing - whilst he also belted out other hits like Love Train.
During his set, there was a poignantly staged homage to the late Fleetwood Mac star Christine McVie. Christine, who passed away in November 2022, was honoured at Glastonbury with her image displayed on the big screen to the admiration of festival-goers.

Fans were densely packed for Sir Rod's set, eagerly absorbing the 80 year old's energetic show, as staff handed out water to keep the audience hydrated amidst the blistering heat at the festival.

Yet, even a star-studded live show like this wasn't exempt from complications. The Mirror takes a look at the intricacies of Rod Stewart's ninety-minute performance and elaborates on how he managed when the heat of Worthy Farm became a challenge...
Overheating
Due to the sweltering conditions, Rod had to make a temporary exit from the stage not once but twice throughout his extended set, needing to switch up his attire as the temperature soared. Originally wearing a jacket and long-sleeved white shirt, Sir Rod eventually emerged back on stage brandishing a striking pink suit, remarking to fans: "The girls are going to do a song for you while a change my shirt."
His band then launched into a spirited cover of 'Lady Marmalade'.
Rod's band stepped in to perform another song as he vanished without warning to change into a vibrant green suit for the second time.

Missing guest
Lulu, one of Rod's guests during the afternoon performance, had a slightly awkward entrance on stage. After Rod introduced Ronnie Wood and then Lulu, Ronnie promptly made his way on stage, but Lulu was nowhere in sight.
Rod paused and announced 'oh Lulu is coming on in a bit' while Ronnie picked up his guitar and played for the massive Glastonbury audience. Lulu later made her appearance, performing Hot Legs with Rod in her dazzling white suit.

Song blunder
During one of his most renowned songs, Maggie May, Rod seemed to fumble his introduction. Despite appearing to start singing prematurely, it certainly didn't deter fans from joining in.
The song prompted the largest singalong of the set from the enormous crowd, which was filled to capacity as Rod dominated the iconic Pyramid Stage for ninety minutes.

Late finish
Rod must have been having such a good time that he ended his set a few minutes late. Amidst the costume changes and celebrity guests, Rod concluded his performance about five minutes behind schedule.
"We have got to get off the stage soon, we are done," he informed the audience before performing the hit track Sailing. He also expressed gratitude to all his celebrity guests for their contribution to his show, which was warmly received by fans.
One thing's for sure, the 80-year-old rocker certainly knows how to put on a show.

Instagram under fire for hosting Bob Vylan ‘death to the IDF' video

Instagram is under pressure to remove Bob Vylan's chant of 'death, death to the IDF' after the Glastonbury controversy attracted a surge in online interest in the group. A video of the group's Saturday afternoon performance, shared by the band's frontman on Instagram, has been viewed more than 5m times. The page for the duo's singer Pascal Robinson-Foster – known as Bobby Vylan – has seen its followers increase almost fourfold in the last week amid continuous controversy. The surge in online attention has also led to a spike in the band's Spotify listeners and viewers on YouTube. The BBC has not made footage of the punk/rap duo's Glastonbury set available on demand and has apologised for not cutting away from the live broadcast. During the performance, the group led the audience in chants of 'Death, death to the IDF!' and chanted 'Free! Free!' with the crowd responding 'Palestine!'. The footage has been viewed millions of times on Instagram, despite the social network banning incitements to violence. The app's ban extends to calling for the death of an army's soldiers, although Instagram's parent company Meta has made exceptions such as allowing Ukrainians to wish violence against Russian invaders. A spokesman for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: 'Bob Vylan's calls for death and destruction should have no place on streaming or social media platforms. We have long called for tougher regulations on social media sites and that social networks proactively search for and remove hate speech from their platforms. 'It is outrageous that footage that the BBC removed for its extremism is now being proudly shared on Instagram, driving up streams and followers. Platforms must not allow musicians or activists inciting violence to profit or gain influence by spreading this poison.' Footage of the performance was posted by the celebrities4palestine page and shared by Bobby Vylan. Meta has toughened its stance against antisemitic posts, including removing posts targeting 'Zionists', although its Oversight Board last year ruled that messages featuring the phrase 'from the river to the sea' do not glorify Hamas and should remain online. Bobby Vylan's Instagram followers have risen from 71,000 to 260,000, according to figures from analytics company Chartmetric. The band's Spotify followers have climbed by 16pc in the last week and YouTube subscribers have risen by 29pc, although many artists see a rise after Glastonbury.

Allies of BBC chief Tim Davie fear latest controversy may damage his leadership

Allies of Tim Davie fear a mounting list of problems could affect his leadership of the BBC for weeks to come, as Labour continues to press the corporation over its livestreaming of Bob Vylan's Glastonbury performance. Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, is understood to have presented BBC executives with a list of questions about the handling of the event at a meeting on Tuesday. It comes after Pascal Robinson-Foster, one of the punk-rap duo, led chants of 'Death, death to the IDF', referring to the Israel Defense Forces, on Saturday. Ministers want to know how the BBC deems an event suitable for a live stream, as well as who has the final say on cutting a feed. Similar questions were also submitted to the broadcaster by the Commons culture select committee. Davie has come under increased pressure since it emerged he was at the festival on Saturday evening and was informed about the events that unfolded on stage. He decided the performance should not feature in any further BBC coverage, but it remained on the iPlayer service for several hours. It is understood that there were technical obstacles to removing the content from the platform once it had been broadcast, with no instant way of removing it. However, those sympathetic to Davie now fear a series of other problems could further destabilise the corporation. Nandy has already turned her fire on the BBC director general, stating that one editorial error was 'something that must be gripped. When you have several, it becomes a problem of leadership'. On Wednesday, Channel 4 will broadcast a documentary about the plight of medics in Gaza that was dropped by the BBC, which said showing the film 'risked creating a perception of partiality'. The film has significant support among BBC staff. Meanwhile, a report on the making of another Gaza documentary is expected within weeks. The BBC pulled the programme How to Survive a Warzone in February after it emerged its 13-year-old narrator was the son of a Hamas official. It is also awaiting the outcome of an inquiry into allegations of inappropriate behaviour by the MasterChef presenter Gregg Wallace. While the investigation has been ordered by Banijay UK, MasterChef's production company, it could have implications for the BBC. Wallace's lawyers have said it is entirely false that he engages in behaviour of a sexually harassing nature. Sources said the BBC board would also be alarmed at the events at Glastonbury and the backlash since. 'The danger is not the optics of this single issue, but the three or four things coming down the road,' said a source. 'It's just whether these things get seen through a leadership prism.' The viewing numbers of the Bob Vylan performance on the live stream were understood to have been low, with the West Holts stage they appeared on experiencing the lowest demand of all five live streams – though the corporation has not given an exact figure. Nevertheless, clips of the performance were soon widely shared on social media. There has been significant fallout for the band. Avon and Somerset police are investigating their performance, as well as that of Irish rap group Kneecap, who appeared directly after Bob Vylan and led chants of 'Free Palestine'. Kneecap's set was not livestreamed. Bob Vylan have had their US visas withdrawn ahead of a planned tour. The band said they had been 'targeted for speaking up' over Gaza, adding: 'Silence is not an option.' 'Today, a good many people would have you believe a punk band is the number one threat to world peace,' they said in a statement online. 'We are not for the death of Jews, Arabs or any other race or group of people. '[We] are not the story. We are a distraction from the story. And whatever sanctions we receive will be a distraction. The government doesn't want us to ask why they remain silent in the face of this atrocity? To ask why they aren't doing more to stop the killing? To feed the starving?' Sir Ephraim Mirvis, the UK's chief rabbi, said the event was a 'national shame'. He wrote on X: 'The airing of vile Jew-hatred at Glastonbury and the BBC's belated and mishandled response, brings confidence in our national broadcaster's ability to treat antisemitism seriously to a new low. 'It should trouble all decent people that now, one need only couch their outright incitement to violence and hatred as edgy political commentary, for ordinary people to not only fail to see it for what it is, but also to cheer it, chant it and celebrate it. Toxic Jew-hatred is a threat to our entire society.'

Gavin & Stacey's Mathew Horne looks worlds away from his sitcom character as he shows off bold new hair style at Wimbledon with his wife Celina Bassili

Gavin & Stacey's Mathew Horne looked worlds away from his sitcom character as he showed off a bold new hair style on Tuesday. The actor, 46, was attending Wimbledon day two in south London with his wife Celina Bassili. After the beloved BBC show, where he played titular character Gavin Shipman, came to an end with the 2024 Christmas special, he looks to have been growing out his dark tresses. On the show his character Gavin sports short hair but now he has opted for a longer and slicked back look. For the tennis day out he looked dapper in a dark suit and white shirt, while Celina looked chic in a beige linen dress. She completed her look with dark brown slip on shoes and a stylish leather bag for the day out. After the beloved BBC show, where he played titular character Gavin Shipman (seen), came to an end with the 2024 Christmas special, he looks to have been growing out his dark tresses It comes just a few days after he enjoyed a low-key trip to Glastonbury Festival over the weekend. Fans spotted the star as he had breakfast with his wife Celina on Saturday morning. Dressed in a black sweatshirt, shorts and a matching baseball cap, he and Celina were overheard discussing what bands they were going to see. One onlooker told MailOnline: 'Mat has grown his hair so he was almost unrecognisable but then you hear his voice and there was no doubt it was him. 'For his level of fame there was no fanfare at all, not like some of the other big stars. He was sitting quietly with his wife taking in the sunshine. 'It was only a few months ago since he was the star of the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special which was watched by 18 million people. 'lt was so refreshing to see.' Celina posted a series of photos and videos on her Instagram site after she and Mat, 46, arrived at Worthy Farm, including a sweet snap of the pair together. Mat previously attended Glastonbury in 2009. The actor is said to have welcomed the child with set designer Bassili shortly after their wedding in September 2021 Mat and Celina married in a secret wedding held at a 1930s mansion in the bride's native Norway in 2021 after they began dating in 2019. The actor is said to have welcomed the child with set designer Bassili shortly after their wedding in September 2021. Mat was previously engaged to Evelyn Hoskins, star of BBC medical drama Casualty. Mat and his Gavin & Stacey co-star James Corden fell out in the late noughties following the success of BBC One comedy. While Corden went on to be a star of Broadway and the West End after his appearance in theatre show One Man, Two Guv'nors, and latterly Hollywood where he hosted The Late Late Show on US network CBS, Mat lived a much quieter life. Mat plays Gavin, the son of Pam and Mick Shipman in Gavin and Stacey, which hit our screens in 2007. Close friends, among them Gavin & Stacey co-stars James Corden and Joanna Page, were understood to be aware of the birth - which was not made public by the couple at the time. A source told The Sun last year: 'Mathew is a brilliant dad and he and Celina love being parents. 'Celina's brother has a son who is a similar age and they loved spending time together. 'Mathew also kept the news quiet because he prefers to live his life out of the spotlight, even though he's a household name thanks to Gavin & Stacey. 'All his Gavin & Stacey co-stars know about him being a dad, including James Corden and Joanna Page'. The actor shot to stardom as part of the hit show Gavin & Stacey, in which he played Gavin Shipman (pictured left with the cast of the show) The actor was first seen kissing the set designer during a night out in Wales two years earlier, while they were busy filming the last Gavin & Stacey Christmas special. Bassili, who graduated from University Of Arts London with a first class degree in set design, lists the Gavin & Stacey special on her online CV. With the kiss, he appeared to confirm his relationship was over with Casualty actress Evelyn Hoskins. A spokesperson later told MailOnline: 'Mathew and Evelyn separated amicably in October 2018.'
