Squash: Egypt's El-Sherbini equals record, Asal claims maiden PSA World Championship title - World

Al-Ahram Weekly18-05-2025
Nour El-Sherbini captured her record-equalling eighth PSA World Championship crown, and Mostafa Asal secured his first, with the duo clinching straight-set victories in all-Egyptian finals at the 2024/2025 edition in Chicago on Sunday.
El-Sherbini, 29, overcame Hania El-Hammamy 11-5, 11-9, 11-4, and 11-7 in a 61-minute contest to draw level with Malaysian icon Nicol David's all-time record of eight world titles.
It was her 10th consecutive appearance in the final and her fourth championship triumph in the Windy City.
'I never imagined I'd get to eight,' said El-Sherbini. 'I've had a tough season, but I really wanted this one. It means everything.'
On the men's side, Asal produced a clinical 11-7, 11-8, and 11-3 win over four-time champion Ali Farag, completing a flawless tournament without dropping a single game.
The 23-year-old holds the PSA World title and the British Open crown, retaining the World No.1 spot.
'To win this title, and stay No.1, is incredible,' Asal said.
'There were a lot of mental challenges this week. I'm grateful to my team, especially to James Willstrop, who helped me stay focused,' he said.
Both finals showcased Egypt's continued supremacy in the sport. Egyptian players account for all finalists at squash's most prestigious tournament, which carries a total prize fund of $1.31 million.
Asal, who had lost to Peru's Diego Elias in last year's final, exacted redemption against Farag — his sixth final meeting with the experienced World No.2 — extending his head-to-head advantage to 5-1.
Meanwhile, El-Hammamy was appearing in her first World Championship final.
'She's young and talented, but today I had the edge of experience,' El-Sherbini said.
The PSA World Tour will now shift to Egypt for the Palm Hills Open from 22 to 27 May.

Liverpool to remember Diogo Jota with permanent tribute - World

Liverpool are to create a permanent tribute to remember former player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who died in a car crash earlier this month, the Premier League champions announced on Saturday. Father of three Jota died alongside his brother on July 3, 11 days after marrying his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, after their car came off the road and burst into flames in northern Spain. A large number of tributes in the shape of flowers, scarves, cards and jerseys have been left at Anfield which Liverpool said would form the basis for the permanent monument. "The thousands of physical tributes outside Anfield have been gradually removed over the course of the last week and carefully separated and safely stored," the club said in a statement. "Floral tributes will then be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites. "The remaining artefacts will be recycled by a specialist company and used to help create a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield." The club also said that players will have a "Forever 20" emblem - referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number - printed on their shirts and stadium jackets for the season. Liverpool paid tribute to Jota and Silva during their friendly at Preston a fortnight ago and will hold their main commemoration, which will feature a fan mosaic and a minute of silence, before they kick off the new season at home to Bournemouth on August 15. Newcastle boss Howe confident Isak will stay despite transfer talk - World

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe insisted Saturday that Alexander Isak is still a Newcastle player despite speculation around a move to either Premier League champions Liverpool or Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Isak has not travelled with Newcastle for their pre-season tour of Asia, apparently because of a minor thigh injury, but Howe said the 25-year-old Swedish striker was a key part of his plans. "Of course, there are always going to be things going on behind the scenes," Howe told reporters in Singapore, where Newcastle play Arsenal on Sunday. "He is aware he's in the news every day, which I'm sure is not easy for anyone in that situation. "Conversations between Alex and the club or with me will stay private for obvious reasons. We do share a good relationship," Howe added. Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, has been "magnificent for us for as long as he has been with us," said Howe. "And he is very comfortable in the dressing room." Isak did not travel with the Magpies after the thigh injury kept him out of Newcastle's friendly defeat to Celtic last week. "He mentioned before the Celtic game that it would be very minimal and nothing too serious," said Howe. "But he left training very early and didn't feel right. So, he's now back in Newcastle getting that injury assessed." Howe remained confident that Isak will be wearing black and white when the new season kicks off next month. "I said after the game against Celtic that I was confident he would stay. I don't see anything that is going to change that opinion of mine at the moment. "It's football," he added. "And who knows what the future may bring." The Magpies ended their 70-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup and finished in fifth place in the Premier League last season to secure a return to the Champions League. "I think once you've experienced that feeling of winning, you want it again. So, we want to do it again as soon as possible, in all the competitions we are in," said Howe. "We set the bar very high, and there's a lot of ambition within the team."
