Supercross Riders React to Detroit Red Flag Ruling in 250 Class

Yahoo23-02-2025
Last week in Detroit, Max Anstie was seconds away from winning the first two rounds of the 250SX East division.
However, the race was red flagged that officials declared would require a restart. It erased an over five second lead held by Max Anstie with less than 10 seconds remaining on the Main Event clock. What appeared to be his second consecutive win ended up with him in second behind Detroit winner Levi Kitchen.
Many competitors were not aware of the rule change made in 2024. In previous years, the race would be declared official if 90% of the clock had passed. For the last year and a half, the rule was updated to require the clock to be fully expired.
Aaron Plessinger was one of those unaware of the change.
'I'm not really a rule breaker, so I don't have to pay attention to it that much,' said Plessinger.
In his eleventh year of AMA Pro competition, Plessinger has respected experience across the industry. He was Rookie of the Year for both indoor Supercross and outdoor Motocross in 2015 and boasts eight career Supercross wins in 250 and one Supercross victory in 450.
The Ohio native was simply not a fan of the rule change.
'I never heard or saw anything about it being changed, but I do feel like if 90% of the race is done, it should be done,' he stated. 'I don't think they should line back up and restart it. If there's seven seconds on the clock, I think at that point it's like, 'Alright, we did 90% and that's good enough for us.'
'I like the old rule.'
As talented as he is, Cole Davies, 17, sits on the opposite end of experience. The New Zealand rookie earned four Supercross Futures podiums with two victories. In just the opening four races of his professional career in the 250SX West division, he has admittedly turned heads to his early success with two podium finishes so far this year.
Even he was confused from the situation and caught off guard from the ruling.
'I wasn't aware of that (rule change),' said Davies. 'I was kind of shocked at what happened there. I surely didn't think they were going to red flag it.'
He also shared that he has never had a situation like that before from club racing as a kid.
'Honestly, I couldn't even tell you (how to handle that situation),' he continued. 'I haven't even had a red flag. I can tell you if that happens, but right now, I don't know.'
As is true with all competitors, the rivalries will always be overshadowed by comradery. Malcolm Stewart, who won his first career 450SX race in Tampa, made that point clear.
'To be honest with you, I always tell myself that I hope and pray that none of these riders ever come across that,' said the Florida native. 'Anytime we see a red flag, no matter who, you just hope and pray that guy's going to be okay and he lives to fight another day. Red flags are bad flags.
'When it comes to that side of things (understanding the rule change), that's what the team manager are supposed to take care of. I just do my job and race that motor bike to the checkered flag.'
Grant Harlan advanced into the Arlington Main Event from a second-place finish in the Last Chance Qualifier spoke on the issue as well. Even though he admitted he hasn't been in a position of leading a Main Event to fully understand Anstie's position, he shared the importance of understand the rule changes at this level of motorsports while arguing in Anstie's favor that he still deserved and earned the win that never came.
'I'm sure it was in the rule book,' said Harlan. 'Normally they (AMA) send an updated one with red highlights to show what the new rules are or if anything changed, so I would imagine if we go in there and look from the one they sent at the beginning of the year, then that was probably in it.
'Just over 90%, in my personal opinion, I feel like Max deserved that win, but the rules are the rules.'
Harlan was yet another rider not aware of the rule change in place for over a year.

Wings Rookie Paige Bueckers Ties WNBA Record vs. Seattle Storm

Paige Bueckers leads all WNBA rookies in scoring (18.4 points per game) and assists (5.5 per game), and she ranks second in steals (1.7 per game), and she accomplished something on Tuesday night that put her name in the records books. The Dallas Wings first-year guard is fresh off her first All-Star appearance, and she's having a breakout rookie season, ranking among the top 10 in the league in several categories including made field goals per game (fifth), steals per game (sixth), assists per game (seventh), and points per game (eighth). Bueckers has been compared to Indiana Fever star and reigning Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark for much of their time in college, and after Dallas drafted Bueckers No. 1 overall back in April (Clark was the No. 1 overall pick the year before), many began using Clark as the bar for which Bueckers' rookie season would be judged. Bueckers also tied one of Clark's records earlier this season in averaging 15 points and five assists through her first 15 games, and she broke two of Clark's other records — most fan votes for the All-Star game by a rookie (805,471) and fastest player to 250 career points (Bueckers did it in 13 games while it took Clark 16 games last year.) Through three quarters of Tuesday's game against the Storm, Bueckers logged 11 points, three assists, two rebounds, a steal, and a block — and the Wings held a 66-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Former Eagles Standout Makes Statement on Philly's Super Bowl Rings

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. This week, the Philadelphia Eagles got their hands on their championship rings. The massive and unique piece of jewelry went viral for the creative design, which includes a button that forces the wings on the sides to pop out. Although the former Eagles standout cornerback Jalen Mills is no longer with the organization, he is a fan of what he saw. The veteran defensive back took to social media to send a message to other players across the league. "If seeing that ring the Eagles just got doesn't motivate you, [I don't know] what will!!" Mills wrote. If seeing that ring the eagles just got doesn't motivate you .. Idk what will.!!🔥 — Jalen Mills (@greengoblin) July 19, 2025 The former Eagles defensive back knows the feeling of receiving a Super Bowl ring well. Back in 2016, Mills joined the Eagles after his run at LSU. He was the team's 233rd pick in the seventh round. Typically, getting drafted that late doesn't result in immediate playing time. For Mills, he stood out rather quickly. As a result, he played in 16 games during his rookie season. By year two, Mills was a full-time starter for the Eagles. He ended up being a critical presence in the Eagles' secondary during the season they won their first Super Bowl. Jalen Mills #31 of the Philadelphia Eagles participates in a social media post after the game against the Atlanta Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field on September 7, 2018 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eagles defeat the Falcons 18-12 MoreIn 2017, Mills played in 15 games. He combined 64 tackles, with one of them going for a loss. The sophomore defensive back deflected 14 passes and picked off quarterbacks three times. One of those interceptions went back for a score. During the Eagles' 2017 playoff run, Mills had 13 tackles and five pass deflections. He started on the opposite side of Ronald Darby on the Eagles' Super Bowl-winning team. Mills remained with the Eagles for several seasons, but the rosters he was on didn't manage to get back to the Super Bowl stage. By 2020, Mills was playing in his final season for the Eagles, starting in 15 games. He collected a career-high 74 tackles and picked off one pass. After his fifth season with the Eagles, Mills tested the free agency market. The veteran landed a four-year offer from the New England Patriots. He was set to earn a reported $24 million throughout that tenure. After the 2022 season, Mills was released by New England. He returned to the team under new terms during the same season. Following his third season with the Patriots, Mills has struggled to stick anywhere else. At this point, the defensive back remains a free agent and seems motivated by his former team to get back out on the field and make an impact. Meanwhile, the Eagles will get another shot at defending their title as Super Bowl Champions. When the Eagles won it with Mills on the team, they struggled to follow up with a similar performance. Although the Eagles squeezed by the Wild Card Round in the 2018 playoffs, they came up short in the Divisional Round. The Eagles will be searching for different results this time around.
