Lucknow: The 45-year-old contractor from Sultanpur, whose body was found in a rented house in Gudamba area on June 24, was murdered by four men who borrowed Rs 60 lakh from him a year ago.
All four accused were arrested near the Behta flyover on Friday, said DCP East Shashank Singh.
"The body of Umashankar Singh, who stayed alone in House No. 145, Arjun Enclave, was found on June 24, with his throat slit and multiple injuries. An FIR was lodged by his wife, Mamta Singh, alleging financial betrayal and murder," the DCP said.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that Umashankar lent Rs 60 lakh to Sanjay Kumar Chauhan and his brother Shiva Singh alias Shivram Singh a year ago for business purposes.
Over time, the relationship soured, especially after the victim allegedly began verbally abusing the accused during drinking sessions," the DCP added.
The arrested persons have been identified as Sanjay Kumar Chauhan (36), Shiva Singh alias Shivram Singh (34), both from Sultanpur, Kavinandan Singh alias Chhotu (26), and Abhinandan Singh (45), both from Pratapgarh.
Police said the accused often frequented the victim's house and were planning the murder for some time.

On the night of the incident, after a booze party, the four attacked Umashankar with an axe and a knife, fatally slitting his throat. They then fled the scene after locking the house from outside to mislead investigators.
During custodial interrogation, the accused led police to Atrauli village, where they hid the murder weapons – two blood-stained axes, a knife, and the clothes worn during the crime – inside a black bag hanging from an acacia tree.
Section 4/25 of the Arms Act was added to the FIR following the recovery of the weapons. Police have ruled out the involvement of Umashankar's female friend, Vaishali, who discovered the body and informed the landlord.

Telangana Cops Recover Five-Metal, Silver Idols, Arrest Gang Behind Theft

Hyderabad: Telangana Police arrested three individuals involved in a series of temple thefts and recovered panchaloha (five-metal) and silver idols, and other temple articles. The total value of the recovered items is estimated at Rs. 5.36 lakh. The gang targeted various temples in the Yacharam and Ibrahimpatnam mandals between February and June 2025. Karacha Sivananda, a habitual offender with prior theft cases, and Shaik Shareef, who has no previous criminal record, met at labour gatherings and conspired to steal idols to make a quick buck. The arrested individuals reportedly conducted reconnaissance in hired autos, used crowbars to break locks, and stole idols, temple bells, hundi boxes and other valuable items, according to Rachakonda Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu. The thieves had mostly targeted temples in rural areas or places without any CCTV coverage, Mr Babu said. Among the recovered items are panchaloha idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman, Peddiraju, Peddamma, Ayyappa, a silver Ayyappa idol, brass lamps, and temple bells. The police have registered six cases against the accused in Yacharam, Ibrahimpatnam, and Abdullapurment police stations. The arrested individuals include Akkapalli Kranthi Kumar, who acted as a receiver for the stolen goods. This recovery by the Rachakonda police brings relief to temple authorities and devotees in the region, as many of the stolen deities are now set to be returned to their respective temples. "We were keen to solve the cases quickly as religious sentiment and emotions are involved. It can even lead to erosion of belief if cases are not solved as these idols were being worshipped on a daily basis," the commissioner said. "Since there are expensive items in temples, we need CCTV cameras in all places of worship, not only to stop theft but also to stop communal incidents," Mr Babu said.

Ghost Schools, Fake Students: Rs 57 Lakh Minority Scholarship Scam In Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal: A major scholarship scam worth over lakhs has surfaced in Madhya Pradesh, where more than 40 madrasas and minority schools in Bhopal allegedly siphoned off government funds using fake or ineligible students. NDTV's ground investigation raises serious questions: Were the students ever real - or were they just names on paper? NDTV's team began their investigation at the listed address of "City Montessori School" near Aam Wali Masjid in Bhopal - one of the institutions under scrutiny by the Crime Branch. But there was no school there. What we found instead were deserted lanes, unrelated school boards, and finally, a single board of "City Montessori" on Chiklod Road. Beneath the board? No classrooms, no students, just a locked structure. Locals confirmed: the school never functioned. "They only rented space and put up a board. No classes were ever held here," said Azim, a local resident. "I've lived here my whole life. That board has been up for years, but no school ever opened," added Mohammad Salim. Yet, records show the school claimed Rs 1.65 lakh in scholarship for 29 students from Classes 1 to 8. The scam doesn't stop there. According to the Crime Branch, many institutions without proper recognition - some approved only till Class 8 - claimed scholarships in the names of students studying in Classes 11 and 12. The numbers are staggering - Rs 57.78 lakh withdrawn, 972 students' names used, over 100 educational institutions under the scanner. "We have registered FIRs against operators of 40 schools and madrasas," said Additional Deputy Commission of Police Shailendra Singh Chauhan. "If the students themselves are found to be fictitious, harsher legal action will follow." The scam has triggered a political row. The opposition has slammed the BJP-led government, calling it another addition to a growing list of education-related scams. "From Vyapam to nursing, every sector has seen scams," said former Congress minister PC Sharma. "This money must be recovered and given to the deserving." In response, Krishna Gaur, Minister for Minority Welfare, distanced herself from the controversy. "These complaints were raised during the previous tenure," she said. "The central government is probing the matter. Our department is cooperating and has submitted the required information." NDTV's reality check revealed a painful irony - the very students the scheme was meant for, never received the aid. While fake schools and names pocketed government money, thousands of underprivileged students who genuinely need help remain neglected. Because when schemes are looted on paper, it's not just public money that's stolen - it's a poor child's chance at a better future.
