Andhra Pradesh government to distribute induction stoves to 11,400 Anganwadi centres from today
across the state on Thursday, 5 June, marking World Environment Day.

Plans are underway to extend this initiative to all 55,607 AWCs under the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP). The switch to induction stoves is expected to reduce recurring LPG costs, with annual savings estimated at around Rs 25 crore. It is also projected to prevent approximately 28,327 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
The NECP was formally launched a few months ago in Andhra Pradesh by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu in the presence of Union minister for housing, power, and urban development, Manohar Lal Khattar.
The distribution of stoves and utensils will commence on Thursday.
Led by the AP dept of women and child welfare, the initiative aligns with the Union govt's 'Go Electric' campaign and the NECP, championed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).
The large-scale distribution programme will be inaugurated by minister for women, child welfare, and tribal welfare, G Sandhya Rani, alongside public representatives in Vijayawada on Thursday.
They will oversee the distribution of energy-efficient induction cooktops and compatible utensils to Anganwadi centres.
Minister Sandhya Rani, secretary (department of women and child welfare) Surya Kumari, and director M Venu Gopal Reddy expressed gratitude to chief minister Naidu and Union minister Khattar for their continued guidance. They also acknowledged the contributions of chief secretary K Vijayanand, BEE, EESL, and other state designated agencies for their collaborative efforts.

Anil Malik, secretary of the Union ministry of women and child development, praised Andhra Pradesh's efforts at a national conference held in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
"Having studied best practices from 12 major states, the partnership between AP govt and EESL serves as a national role model for implementing the NECP on a saturation basis. The women and child welfare department of the AP govt has taken the lead in eliminating fossil fuels from cooking at AWCs.
All other states will have to follow suit sooner or later," said Malik.
EESL CEO Shri Vishal Kapoor, along with top officials including CGM Shri Animesh Mishra, is currently monitoring and overseeing implementation.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency has assured full support for scaling and replicating Andhra Pradesh's clean cooking model across the country and encourages other states to adopt similar sustainable initiatives for long-term impact.

The Wellington office will provide a local mission for FBI staff, who have operated with oversight from Australia since 2017. Kyiv mourns after Russian attack that killed 31 people, including 5 children
Kyiv, Aug 1 (AP) The Ukrainian capital Kyiv observed an official day of mourning Friday, a day after a Russian drone and missile attack on the city killed 31 people, including five children, and injured more than 150, officials said. The youngest victim in Thursday's strikes was 2 years old, and 16 of the injured were children, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. It was the highest number of children killed and injured in a single attack on Kyiv since aerial attacks on the city began in October 2022, according to official casualty figures reported by The Associated Press. The death toll rose overnight as emergency crews continued to dig through rubble. The Russian barrage demolished a large part of a nine-story residential building in the city, while more than 100 other buildings were damaged, including homes, schools, kindergartens, medical facilities and universities, officials said. Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent months, ignoring calls from Western leaders including US President Donald Trump to stop striking civilian areas after more than three years of war. Russian forces are also pressing on with their grinding war of attrition along the 1,000-kilometres front line, where incremental gains over the past year have cost the lives of thousands of soldiers on both sides. He repeated his appeal for countries to impose heavier economic sanctions on Russia to deter the Kremlin, as US-led peace efforts have failed to gain traction. 'No matter how much the Kremlin denies (sanctions') effectiveness, they are working and must be stronger," Zelenskyy said. Even so, the Institute for the Study of War said that Ukraine's hold on the key city is weakening. 'Russian forces will likely complete the seizure of Chasiv Yar in the coming days, which will open several possible avenues for Russian forces to attack Ukraine's fortress belt — a series of fortified cities that form the backbone of Ukraine's defencive positions" in the Donetsk region, the Washington-based think tank said. Ukraine has tried to pressure the Russian army by striking rear areas with long-range drones that target rail networks, oil depots and arsenals. Russia's Defence Ministry said Friday that air defences shot down 60 Ukrainian drones overnight.
