Flicker Of Hope: Indian Grand Mufti Steps In As Kerala Nurse Faces Gallows – Crucial Talks Underway IN Yemen's Sanaa
New Delhi/Sanaa: Urgent diplomatic and legal efforts are underway to stop the execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who is facing death sentenced in Yemen. Her execution is scheduled for July 16. The Supreme Court of India on July 14 heard a petition seeking intervention in the case, while parallel talks continue in Yemen between local authorities, tribal leaders and representatives from India. The petition was filed by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, a group campaigning to prevent her execution. During the Supreme Court hearing, Attorney General R. Venkataramani informed the bench that 'the Government of India is doing whatever is utmost possible' but highlighted that 'having regard to the sensitivity and status of Yemen as a place, there is nothing much the the government can do'. Meanwhile, negotiations are underway in Yemen's capital of Sanaa involving tribal leaders, judicial representatives and religious scholars. The talks are being attended by Habeeb Abdurahman Ali Mashhour, who is a representative of Shaikh Habeeb, along with a judge from the Jinayat court, representatives of the Yemeni government, tribal leaders and Talal's brother. The initiative was launched following a direct appeal by Indian Grand Mufti and All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama General Secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar, who requested the victim's family to pardon Priya without seeking blood money (diya). A statement issued from Kanthapuram's office expressed hope that the outcome of the discussions may be known soon. Originally from Palakkad district in Kerala, Priya was convicted in 2020 by a Yemeni court for the murder of her business partner, whom she allegedly drugged and killed in July 2017, with the assistance of another nurse. According to Yemeni court documents, she then dismembered his body and disposed of the parts in an underground water tank. Her final appeal was rejected in 2023, and she is currently held at the Central Prison in Sanaa. The Indian government continues to monitor the case, but its capacity to intervene directly remains limited, as India does not currently have an operational embassy in Yemen due to the ongoing civil conflict there. The Supreme Court case, diplomatic appeals and tribal negotiations in Yemen are all unfolding simultaneously in a bid to prevent her execution. The situation remains fluid and a final decision from either side is awaited.

Congress urges State unit to launch protest against SIR in Bihar
The Congress leadership on Monday (July 14, 2025) asked its Bihar unit to launch mass protests against the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the State before the Assembly elections. The meeting, presided by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, was attended by Rahul Gandhi, general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal apart from State leaders, including Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Rajesh Kumar. Independent Lok Sabha member from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, was also part of the meeting. Mr. Pappu Yadav' presence at the AICC meeting seeks to make a political point as he was not allowed to share stage along with Mr. Gandhi and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav's joint protests against the SIR in Patna on July 9. The differences between the Purnia Lok Sabha member and the RJD leadership are well known. After the meeting, Mr. Pappu Yadav refused to acknowledge Mr. Tejashwi Yadav as the sole chief ministerial face of the RJD-Congress alliance in the State. The PCC chief, however, played down the differences. 'There is no confusion within our alliance on any issue,' Mr. Kumar said, adding, 'All the leaders of the INDIA alliance said in one voice that we should constitute the campaigning, manifesto committee as soon as possible'.

Defamation case: RaGa to appear in Lko court today
Lucknow: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi will appear in Lucknow's MP-MLA special magistrate court Tuesday in a case involving allegedly defamatory statements against the Indian Army made by him during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in Lucknow. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Feb 1, the special court had summoned him as an accused, taking cognizance of a complaint filed in the defamation case. Rahul's advocate Pranshu Agarwal said after his appearance, bail will be sought from the court. The case was filed by retired BRO director Udai Shanker Srivastava, who alleged that Rahul had made derogatory comments in Lucknow on Dec 16, 2022, days after a face-off between Indian and Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh. Rahul had said, "People will ask about Bharat Jodo Yatra... but they will not ask a single question about China capturing 2,000sqkm of Indian land, killing 20 Indian soldiers, and thrashing our soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh... Don't pretend people don't know." Srivastava called the remarks "false and baseless", made with an "evil intention of demoralising the Indian Army and damaging public faith". He cited the Army's official Dec 12 statement, which described the Dec 9 clash in Arunachal as involving "minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides". Rahul had earlier filed a petition before HC's Lucknow bench against the summons, but was not granted relief. His lawyer had argued in HC that the case was politically driven and Srivastava lacked standing under section 199 CrPC, as the Army — not the petitioner — was the target. On May 29, Justice Subhash Vidyarthi rejected the claim, saying Srivastava was an "aggrieved person" under the law. HC had said Rahul must stand trial, observing a prima facie case exists against him. "Freedom of speech is subject to reasonable restrictions and does not include the freedom to make statements defamatory to any person or to the Indian Army," HC had noted.
