Air India flight returns to Mumbai mid-air after ‘burning smell' detected; passengers safe
In yet another mid-air scare involving Air India, a Chennai-bound flight was forced to return to Mumbai on Saturday following a burning smell in the cabin. Flight AI 639, which took off from Mumbai on the morning of 27 June, made a precautionary air turn-back shortly after take-off, the airline confirmed. According to an official statement, the Airbus aircraft returned "safely" to the Mumbai airport, and an alternate aircraft was arranged for the continuation of the journey. While Air India did not disclose the source of the burning odour or further technical details, it assured that all passengers were safe and received necessary assistance. 'Our ground teams in Mumbai extended full support to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption,' the airline said. This is not the first time an Air India flight has made an emergency return. In a separate incident on Friday, a non-specific security alert was flagged on another Air India aircraft. The airline's spokesperson confirmed that the aircraft was thoroughly checked as per standard security procedures and later cleared for its next scheduled flight. Adding to the growing list of recent operational hiccups, an Air India Express flight from Delhi to Jammu was forced to return mid-air on Friday due to a technical glitch. The aircraft took off after a delay of over 20 minutes at 11:04 am but was redirected back to Delhi instead of completing its journey to Jammu, where it was expected to land by 12:05 pm.

Chennai-bound Air India flight returns to Mumbai due to burning smell inside cabin
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 28 (ANI): A Chennai-bound Air India flight returned to Mumbai, its departure location, after being alerted about a burning smell inside the cabin, the airline confirmed on Saturday. According to Air India, the incident occurred on Friday (June 27) on flight AI639, which departed from Mumbai and was headed to Chennai. 'The crew of flight AI639 operating from Mumbai to Chennai on Friday, June 27, 2025, made a precautionary air-return to Mumbai due to a burning smell in the cabin,' an Air India spokesperson said. 'The flight landed safely back in Mumbai, and an aircraft change was initiated. Our ground colleagues in Mumbai provided all necessary support to passengers to minimise the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption,' the spokesperson added. In another incident, a non-specific security alert was detected on one of Air India's aircraft on Friday. The aircraft was cleared for the next flight after standard security procedures, the Air India spokesperson said. A statement issued by the Air India spokesperson said, 'A non-specific security alert was detected on one of our aircraft. Standard security procedures were duly carried out, and the aircraft has been cleared for the next flight. Air India accords top priority to the safety and security of its passengers and crew.' Earlier, Air India Express (a subsidiary of Air India) flight IX2564, operating from Delhi to Jammu, was forced to return to its point of origin after a technical issue was detected mid-flight. The flight, operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft, had a scheduled departure time of 10:40 AM but took off at 11:04 AM. It was expected to arrive in Jammu at 12:05 PM. However, the aircraft was diverted back to Delhi, as per Flightradar24. Confirming the development, an Air India Express spokesperson said, 'An alternative aircraft was arranged to operate our Delhi-Jammu flight after the original aircraft returned to Delhi due to a technical issue. We regret the inconvenience caused.' These security concerns have come to light following the crash of the London-bound Air India-171 flight in Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 out of 242 passengers and crew members on board. (ANI)

Kanaka Durga Temple to undergo major revamp under vision 2029 initiative
Vijayawada: A major revamp is on the horizon for the iconic Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam atop Indrakeeladri Hill, with a comprehensive Rs 100 crore development plan unveiled as part of the state's 'Vision 2029' initiative. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The focus of this ambitious project is to significantly enhance facilities for the nearly 1.5 crore devotees who visit the temple annually. The plan was drawn up after extensive studies of the temple's present-day challenges, from traffic congestion and limited access roads to severe shortages of accommodation and sanitation facilities. Crowd management has become a major issue at Kanaka Durga Temple, with an influx of devotees increasing every year. "We have focused on improving infrastructure and amenities for devotees. The master plan is designed by studying the projected estimates of the crowd for the next 50 years," said Y Satyanarayana Chowdary (Sujana Chowdary), Vijayawada West MLA. The proposals, designed as five integrated projects, also include a detailed 3D model covering roads, ghat roads, and the entire temple precinct. Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) announced that he is actively lobbying the Union govt to sanction funds under the PRASAD scheme, with several appeals already made to the Union tourism ministry. Among the highlights of the plan is the introduction of multi-level parking at Kanaka Durga Nagar, a six-lane widened approach road to the temple, and a dedicated terminal for buses carrying devotees. A footpath and walking track will be developed to ease pedestrian flow, while a smart traffic management system will be deployed to tackle vehicular congestion. Additionally, the Indrakeeladri surroundings will be beautified with lush greenery, parks, and water fountains to create a serene atmosphere. The goal is to complete the transformation by 2029, making the temple a model spiritual destination in India.
