Pakatan to handle GRS-Barisan rifts

The Star6 days ago
KOTA KINABALU: Pakatan Harapan will have to walk a tightrope in juggling the electoral cooperation between rivals Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), says state Umno leader Datuk Salleh Said Keruak.
With the GRS opting to forge an electoral pact with Pakatan in the coming state election, he said Barisan will leave it to Pakatan to manage the cooperation between the three parties.
'For Barisan, we made the choice to work with Pakatan early on.
'It was on the basis that we are the foundation of the unity government at the federal level.
'So this cooperation is a logical and responsible continuation.
'How Pakatan manages cooperation with Barisan and GRS is none of our business.
'What is important for Barisan is a sincere cooperation,' he said in a Facebook post.
At present, there are two alliances in preparation for the Sabah polls: Pakatan and Barisan, and Pakatan and GRS.
Salleh, who is Sabah Umno treasurer and a former Sabah chief minister, said their focus is to strengthen the party on the ground.
'We want to win and help our coalition partners.
'We are not a two-faced player.
'Our approach is clear – honest, open and for the good of the people of Sabah,' he said.
Both GRS and Sabah Barisan, who were partners in the 2020 state election, have refused to work with each other after Sabah Barisan withdrew its support for Hajiji in January 2023.
Sabah Pakatan filled the vacuum and kept Hajiji's state government afloat.
Salleh said that GRS' decision to forge an electoral pact with Pakatan reflected that they have chosen to work with national parties and rejected the all-local party formula adopted in Sarawak.
'GRS' decision to choose Pakatan as a partner for the Sabah election deserves respect.
'They ultimately rejected the solo path and chose to work with national parties.
'Of course, they have their own basis, and the people will judge,' he added.
Salleh said GRS' decision rejects the Sarawak formula that distances itself from national parties.
'They (GRS) chose to work with national parties.
'We in Barisan have been consistent from the beginning that a coalition with Pakatan is the best approach for stability,' he said.
His posting comes in response to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's confirmation on Sunday about an electoral pact with Pakatan.
There has been no immediate reaction by GRS component party partners on Hajiji's announcement of the electoral pact.
Salleh believes that GRS chose Pakatan as a partner because they wanted to work with the Prime Minister's party to ensure good relations with the federal government.
'This is in line with the need to guarantee political stability and development for Sabah,' he said.

All GRS assemblymen to defend seats — Joachim

Dr Joachim striking the gong to officiate the event, witnessed by Michael (third from right) and Jonnybone (second from left). TELUPID (Aug 3): All current state assemblymen under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will continue to represent the coalition in the upcoming 17th State Election, said Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Joachim Gunsalam. He made the affirmation during the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Telupid annual general meeting recently. Dr Joachim, who is acting president of PBS, said the GRS government is capable of guaranteeing political stability in Sabah as it comprises eight local parties that prioritise the state's development. He said this stability has been a key driver of economic growth since GRS assumed leadership of the state. 'GRS must continue to govern Sabah to ensure the continuity of comprehensive economic progress,' he said. Dr Joachim also urged PBS Telupid members to unite and fully support division chief and Telupid assemblyman Datuk Jonnybone J. Kurum in retaining the seat. 'Jonnybone has been vocal in the State Assembly and is committed to the people of Telupid. It is only right that we ensure his re-election,' said Dr Joachim, who is also the Minister of Local Government and Housing. He congratulated organising chairman Marcellus Jeffrey and the PBS Telupid Division committee for the successful event, while also acknowledging PBS chief advisor Datuk Seri Panglima Michael Asang, former Labuk assemblyman, for his continued presence and contributions. 'It should be remembered that Telupid was once part of the Labuk constituency, and Datuk Seri Michael Asang played a significant role in this area,' he added. Among those present were Labuk assemblyman and Gagasan Rakyat Sabah chief Datuk Samad Jamri, as well as representatives from Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and Gagasan Rakyat Telupid Division. Meanwhile, Jonnybone thanked Dr Joachim for attending the event despite his tight schedule and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing for allocations to repair the Telupid Native Court building. He also welcomed upcoming legislative amendments aimed at improving the institution.

Pandikar now backs Hajiji's move for GRS to work with Pakatan

KOTA KINABALU: Outspoken United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) president Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia has backed Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's decision to go into an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan. "I support Hajiji's stand in working together with any parties, so long as the deal benefits GRS in that the seats allocation ratio favours GRS," he said Sunday (Aug 3). Pandikar said that Hajiji discussed with him personally and assured that GRS would be putting candidates in more than 50 out of the 73 state seats. "This to me is a stand that is within the scope of the definition of the GRS's war cry 'Rumah Kita, Kita Jaga,' (Our Home, We Protect)," he said when contacted. Pandikar, along with Sabah STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, have been pushing for the eight-party GRS to contest independently in the upcoming state election. "I admit that I have amplified the voice of Datuk Dr Jeffrey, that whoever works with Malaya parties are traitor," Pandikar said. He said Usno's views expressed during political roadshows were to gauge Sabahans' opinions, and if they would support a local party if it were to go solo. "Whilst a reasonable number of Sabahans aspire for GRS to go solo, there are also many who expressed the opinion that total political confrontation with Putrajaya is not a wise move," he said. As such, Usno will remain in GRS to contest in the upcoming election and will support the decision of the GRS chairman to collaborate with any political parties in the election. On July 27, Hajiji announced that GRS will work with Pakatan in the coming state election and subsequently said that he had consulted with GRS leaders on the decision to work with Pakatan to ensure political stability. The SAPP president said that the GRS supreme council had not endorsed the decision and maintained the party's stand that GRS should go solo. Jeffrey has not officially responded to Hajiji's announcement to work with Pakatan, which is already working on an electoral pact with Barisan Nasional for the coming election.

[UPDATED] Anwar: Sulawesi Sea talks must honour legal, historical claims

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has assured that any discussion involving the Sulawesi Sea must be based on legal and historical considerations. He added that the outcomes require the agreement of both the Sabah government and the state legislative assembly. He said the recent 13th Malaysia-Indonesia Annual Consultation meeting with Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto concerning the Sulawesi Sea was conducted in the presence of Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. "In line with the principles of the Madani government, matters such as border delimitation must involve state leaders, including those from Sabah. "I think the Chief Minister (Hajiji) should hear it directly, to express his views, and to be aware of what was discussed," he said during the closing of the three-day National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's event at Sabah International Convention Centre here. Regarding the Sulawesi Sea, Anwar said he had made it clear, in the presence of Hajiji, that the issue must be discussed based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and historical antecedents. The dispute in the Sulawesi Sea involving overlapping maritime claims between East Kalimantan (Indonesia) and southeastern Sabah (Malaysia) has persisted since Malaysia published a map of its maritime boundaries in 1979. According to a written reply dated July 22 published on the Parliament website, the Foreign Ministry maintains that the ND6 and ND7 oil exploration blocks in the Sulawesi Sea fall within Malaysian sovereign territory under international law. "Most importantly, any decision must have the agreement of the Sabah state government and, ultimately, the State Legislative Assembly. "I have chosen to respond as the representative of the federal government, and I will defend Sabah's rights. "This is our country. We will not allow even a single inch of land or sea to be encroached upon or claimed by anyone. "When it came to the court case in Spain involving the Sulu heirs' claims over Sabah, we fought with maximum effort to defend Sabah's sovereignty."
