Alabama jumps in new Top 25 college baseball rankings after huge series win over Georgia
The Alabama Crimson Tide got a big series victory over a top-ranked college baseball team over the weekend at a rainy Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
After dropping the series opener against the Georgia Bulldogs 19-3 in seven innings on Friday, Kade Snell, Justin Lebron, Bryce Fowler and the Crimson Tide rallied to sweep both games of a doubleheader Sunday, 9-3 in Game 1 and 5-4 in Game 2.
The series win made an impact in Monday's new top 25 rankings, which saw Alabama (39-13 overall, 15-12 SEC) rise four spots to No. 16 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Tide moved past West Virginia (40-10), the Oklahoma Sooners and Troy Trojans (37-16) in the Coaches Poll. Alabama defeated Troy, 10-2, on Tuesday to finish 13-0 in midweek play for the season.
In Baseball America's new top 25 rankings, Alabama jumped nine spots to No. 16, one spot below Dallas Baptist (36-13) and one spot ahead of the Clemson Tigers (38-15).
Baseball America said of coach Rob Vaughn and the Crimson Tide:
"Alabama arguably turned in its best week of the season to this point. Following their convincing midweek win over No. 14 Troy, the Crimson Tide earned a massive series victory over then-No. 1 Georgia, which is even more impressing considering they got their doors blown off in Friday's series-opener. Five different Crimson Tide hitters collected multiple RBIs in the series, led by Kade Snell who drove in five. Sidewinder Carson Ozmer anchored the bullpen and notched a pair of saves. If the season ended today Alabama would likely host, though it finishes the regular-season with an important series at No. 13 Florida."
Alabama's highest ranking again came in The Athletic's Top 25 rankings. The Crimson Tide cracked the top 10, one spot below No. 9 Oregon (38-13) and one spot ahead of No. 11 NC State (32-16).
Over at Perfect Game, Alabama moved up seven spots to No. 16, one spot below Clemson and one spot ahead of UCLA. And at D1 Baseball, veteran analyst Kendall Rogers and staff moved Alabama up five spots to No. 18. The Tide rank one spot below No. 16 Tennessee in those rankings.
At the top of the rankings, the LSU Tigers (40-12) climbed to No. 1 in all the major top 25 polls after taking two of three from the Arkansas Razorbacks (41-11) in a top five series in Baton Rouge over the weekend.
Alabama baseball schedule 2025
Alabama closes the regular season in Gainesville against the Florida Gators (35-18, 13-14) in a three-game series beginning at 5:30 p.m. CT Thursday. All three games of the series are scheduled for SEC Network+.

Where Alabama lands in preseason SEC football power rankings

How good will Alabama be in 2025, and will it be enough to carry them back to the College Football Playoff or the SEC Championship Game? USA TODAY Sports college football analyst Paul Myerberg has made an early evaluation of the Crimson Tide and the rest of the SEC with just over a month remaining until the 2025 college football season kicks off. In his preseason SEC football power rankings this week, the veteran college football scribe has Alabama at No. 3 behind Texas and Georgia -- the two teams who met in last year's conference title game. Myerberg said of the Crimson Tide: "It won't hurt to have slightly lower expectations and a somewhat softer spotlight on Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide after winning nine games in his debut. Ty Simpson is expected to take over under center and will operate behind a very strong offensive line with plenty of weapons at his disposal. The defense is the best in the front seven. Overall, this is a very talented team capable of winning the SEC and the national title." Anything related to "lower expectations" for Alabama is highly debatable; expectations for the Crimson Tide are always high. That was true long before Nick Saban, as previous coaches at Alabama can attest all too well. Still, Myerberg's overall point is solid. Alabama does have playmakers -- Ryan Williams being the most explosive on offense, with LT Overton, Tim Keenan, Deontae Lawson, Domani Jackson and others on defense -- that could put them back in the SEC title game or even the national championship if things break their way. Florida State, Alabama War of Words Continues: 'Disrespect Will be Addressed'

The Alabama Crimson Tide travel to Tallahassee to play the Florida State Seminoles on Aug. 30, in one of the headline games in Week 1 of the 2025 college football season — and there has been plenty of chirping from Florida State's starting quarterback. Speaking about Alabama earlier this offseason, Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos said he couldn't see the Crimson Tide "stopping" him and that "they don't have Nick Saban to save them" — not to be mistaken with Prospector telling Woody "that silly Buzz Lightweight can't help you" in "Toy Story 2"; Saban retired following the 2023 season after 17 years at the helm and winning six national titles at Alabama. A video surfaced earlier this week of Castellanos saying that he "just wanted to instill some confidence" in his team. Nevertheless, Alabama defensive lineman Tim Keenan III had a direct response when asked about Castellanos. "Disrespect will be addressed," Keenan said at SEC Media Days on Wednesday, according to Last season, Keenan, who stands at 6-foot-2 and 335 pounds, totaled 2.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss and 40 combined tackles. Keenan is entering his redshirt senior season at Alabama, with whom he has spent his entire collegiate career (2022-present) and started the past two seasons. As for Castellanos, the senior quarterback transferred to Florida State after two seasons at Boston College (2023-24) and one season at UCF (2022). Last season, Castellanos totaled 1,366 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, five interceptions and a 163.4 passer rating, while completing 61.5% of his passes in eight games. The year prior (2023), he posted a 121.0 passer rating, completed 57.3% of his passes but also rushed for 1,113 yards and 13 touchdowns. Both Alabama and Florida State are coming off underwhelming seasons but in vastly different contexts. Alabama went 9-4 (5-3 in SEC play), the most losses it has recorded in a single season since going 7-6 in 2007 in what was Saban's first season as Alabama's head coach, in what was Kalen DeBoer's first season as head coach. Meanwhile, Florida State, which went 13-1 in 2023 and had many clamoring for its inclusion in the College Football Playoff after going 13-0 before bowl season, finished the 2024 season at 2-10 (ACC-worst 1-7 in conference play). It was the Seminoles' lowest win total since winning just one game in the 1974 season. This will be just the sixth time that the Crimson Tide and Seminoles face off, with Alabama winning the last matchup between the two teams in 2017, 24-7, in what was a neutral site game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. Each of their last two matchups came at a neutral site, with the upcoming Week 1 matchup being the first time that they'll play on a college campus since 1974 and the first time Florida State will host Alabama. The Crimson Tide are 3-1-1 in the all-time head-to-head matchup. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
