Ukraine pilot killed, F-16 fighter jet lost amid Russian bombardment
KYIV - A Ukrainian pilot was killed and his F-16 fighter jet lost while repelling a large-scale Russian nighttime missile and drone attack, the Ukrainian military said on Sunday.
It was the third such loss of an F-16 of the war, the military said.
"The pilot used all of his onboard weapons and shot down seven air targets. While shooting down the last one, his aircraft was damaged and began to lose altitude," the Air Force said on the Telegram messaging app.
It said the pilot did everything he could and flew the jet away from a settlement but did not have time to eject.
Russia used hundreds of drones, cruise and ballistic missiles to attack western, southern and central Ukraine overnight, damaging homes and infrastructure and injuring at least six people, local authorities said on Sunday.
Ukraine lost its third F-16 fighter jet since the start of the war while repelling the attack, the military said.
The sounds of explosions were heard in Lviv, Poltava, Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Cherkasy regions, regional governors said.
The Ukrainian military said some 500 different types of aerial weapons were used during the attack, including drones, ballistic and cruise missiles.
"To repel the massive attack, all available means of the defence forces that can operate on enemy air assets were deployed," the military said.
The military said Russia had launched 477 drones and 60 missiles of various types to Ukraine overnight while Ukrainian forces destroyed 211 drones and 38 missiles. It said 225 drones were lost - in reference to the Ukrainian military using electronic warfare to redirect them - or they were drone simulators that did not carry warheads.
It said air strikes were recorded in six locations.
Infrastructure, homes
Six people, including one child, were injured in the central Cherkasy region, the governor Ihor Taburets said on the Telegram messenger. Three multi-storey buildings and a college were damaged in the attack, he said.
Industrial facilities were hit in the southern Ukrainian Mykolaiv and central Dnipropetrovsk regions, officials say.
Local authorities published photos of multi-storey houses with charred walls and broken windows and rescuers evacuating residents.
The governor of the Lviv region in the west of the country said the attack targeted critical infrastructure. However, he did not report on the aftermath.

Iran holds funeral for slain commanders and scientists
Large crowds of mourners dressed in black lined streets in Iran's capital Tehran as the country held a funeral on Saturday for top military commanders, nuclear scientists and some of the civilians killed during this month's aerial war with Israel. At least 16 scientists and 10 senior commanders were among those mourned at the funeral, according to state media, including armed forces chief Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Revolutionary Guards commander General Hossein Salami, and Guards Aerospace Force chief General Amir Ali Hajizadeh. Their coffins were driven into Tehran's Azadi Square adorned with their photos and national flags, as crowds waved flags and some reached out to touch the caskets and throw rose petals onto them. State-run Press TV showed an image of ballistic missiles on display. Mass prayers were later held in the square. State TV said the funeral, dubbed the 'procession of the Martyrs of Power', was held for a total of 60 people killed in the war, including four women and four children. In attendance were President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior figures including Ali Shamkhani, who was seriously wounded during the conflict and is an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as Khamenei's son Mojtaba. Russian journalist held for ransom in Pattaya
One suspect has been arrested, with three more at large, following the abduction of a Russian journalist from his hotel in Pattaya, Chon Buri. During questioning, 26-year-old journalist David Blank told police that four fellow Russians entered his hotel room in Jomtien Soi 14 on Thursday. Holding him at gunpoint, the four proceeded to cover his face with a black bag before assaulting him and handcuffing him. Despite being restrained, Mr Blank said he was able to escape the room after several hours of being left alone and managed to find aid at a nearby café in a gas station. He told police that the four assailants coerced him into phoning his girlfriend, Anna, also a Russian national, who is residing in Bangkok. They then sent a video to her showcasing their abuse of the victim and threatened to murder him if she attempted to contact authorities. The suspects were eventually able to convince the woman into leaving a Rolex brand watch valued at 500,000 to 600,000 baht under a tree on Rama 4 road. According to Mr Blank, Anna was able to film a man in a white shirt retrieving the ransom. Before leaving him handcuffed, the group allegedly forced their victim to transfer 2-million-baht worth of Bitcoin to them. From the information provided, police were able to find an MG sedan identified as used by the kidnappers. It was found left in a pineapple field in Rayong province, with its front window and console smashed. Anton Lokotkov, 26, was later apprehended at a food stall in Jomtien and confirmed by the victim as being the individual who initially knocked on his door. While he has denied any involvement in the allegations as well as knowledge of Mr Blank, police found he had overstayed his visa and was charged in accordance with the violation. Despite most evidence involved in the crime having been destroyed, authorities expressed confidence they will soon find the remaining three individuals tied to the assault.
