Roy Wood Jr. Mocks White House, CNN and Patti LuPone in Peabody Awards Monologue

Yahoo03-06-2025

After announcing its full list of winners last month, the Peabody Awards celebrated those honorees in person Sunday night with a ceremony hosted by Roy Wood Jr. in Los Angeles.
The comedian kicked things off inside the Beverly Wilshire by joking, 'Last year's host was Kumail Nanjiani, so that is back-to-back years with a minority host. The Peabodys standing up for diversity, how about that? Which means in a few months, the White House will cut their funding and so they'll have John Mulaney, that's on y'all.'

The event honored 34 winners across entertainment, documentary, news, podcast/radio, arts, children'sand youth, public service, and interactive and immersive programming, with a focus on storytelling that reflects the social issues and emerging voices of today. Baby Reindeer, Ripley, Shogun and Will & Harper were among the recognized Hollywood projects.
'We're celebrating the fact that everyone in this room has done one of the boldest things you can do in these times, and that is just straight up tell the truth,' Wood told the crowd, acknowledging the stress of having to know all of the horrible things going on in the world to tell the truth. 'It's hard to create stuff about terrible things without knowing all of the terrible things. It's hard — that's why I quit The Daily Show, it was too much stress.' He then deadpanned, 'I work at CNN now [with comedy show Have I Got News for You], I ain't got to do nothing but plug Jake Tapper's book.'
Elsewhere in his monologue, Wood told the winners — who knew they'd be winning ahead of time — to be short and sweet, joking, 'We want your acceptance speeches tonight to be brief and full of sincerities that you don't really mean, like an apology from Patti LuPone.' (The Broadway star apologized Saturday for previous comments she had made about Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald.)
'We're celebrating the storytellers who risk, who did, who investigate, who create and illuminate,' the comedian declared before launching into the categories, which featured a star-studded roster of presenters including Aloe Blacc, Anna Kendrick, Andrew Lack, Benito Skinner, Indya Moore, Joel KimBooster, Jurnee Smollett, Linda Perry, Mandy Moore, Marissa Bode, Michael Schur, Nava Mau, Niecy Nash, Randall Park, Stephen Merchant, Uzo Aduba, Van Jones and Yvonne Orji.
The night also featured two special honors, the first being the Peabody Institutional Award, given to Saturday Night Live. Jon Hamm presented, musing the 'secret sauce of the show has always been 'holding up a mirror and reflecting America's culture to us — politics, contradictions, all of it, right back at you. Yes, SNL is wigs and cue cards and gigs and gags and all of this stuff, but it's always something that dares to confront who we really are.'
Lorne Michaels was on hand to accept, accompanied on stage by alums Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon and Fred Armisen.
'I don't really deserve this, but in a way I do,' Michaels teased, noting, 'During SNL 50 this year, which is stunning to even say, all of those people coming back from the first season on, all being in one room, performing and applauding, I think was one of the most moving experiences of my life. I'm not planning a 60th, but I think that getting to do what I get to do is sort of everything that makes me happy; it also makes me angry.'
To close out the night, Andrea Mitchell was given the Career Achievement Award, as she reflected on her early days in news and how far women have come in the business. She added, 'All of us journalists have to be fearless. It is no exaggeration to say that strong journalism, providing accurate information to the American people, is critical to the survival of our democracy. As Thomas Jefferson wrote to the continental Congress in 1787, 'Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.''

Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Has A Wildly Stacked Cast, And My Inner Film Nerd Is Screaming

Okay, I'm already spiraling and the movie isn't even out yet. Over the past few months, Christopher Nolan has been slowly assembling the cast for his next project, The Odyssey —and if you're anything like me (aka someone who's still emotionally wrecked from Cooper crying out "Murph" in Interstellar), this already feels like a big deal. We're talking Tom Holland and Zendaya reuniting on screen (!!!), and Matt Damon looking like he just emerged from a wilderness survival show. Nolan hasn't revealed much—because of course he hasn't—but the whispers are already enough to make any Nolan girlie (MEEE) lose her mind just a little. But before we spiral any further, let's take a look at this absolutely stacked cast. So far, 19 cast members have been announced—yes, you heard that right. Nineteen. While not all their roles have been revealed yet (classic Nolan mystery mode), we do know that Matt Damon is stepping into the role of Odysseus and Tom Holland will be playing Telemachus. Just that duo alone is enough to make my brain short-circuit, but wait, there's more. We're also getting Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'O, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Cosmo Jarvis, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Will Yun Lee, and Jesse Garcia. Like… how is this even real? +11 A few stars have started to drop little hints, and yes, we're clinging to every word. Jesse Garcia, fresh off Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip, told Cinemablend that the movie is 'huge' in every sense of the word. In his words: 'It's epic on all aspects. It's huge. There's gonna be a lot of stuff in this movie that hasn't been captured on film before. So it's gonna be a spectacle.' Matt Damon has finally said something about The Odyssey, and while it's short, it's very on brand. Per The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about the film, he simply said: 'I literally have an odyssey in front of me.' Classic Damon. He didn't spill any plot details, but that one line is doing a lot. Given Nolan's track record of going big— Interstellar, Tenet, Oppenheimer —and Damon's history of surviving space and war under Nolan's direction, we know this is going to be massive. John Leguizamo recently dropped a behind-the-scenes nugget in an interview on MSNBC's Morning Joe. He said: 'Dude, you know the thing is, okay he's got a crazy budget, it's not small, but he runs like an indie film because he's not doing it by committee, he's not doing it by what the studio says.' So basically: massive budget, but full creative control? Only Nolan could make a giant studio epic feel like a passion project. That's all we know for now, but if history's any indication, Nolan's about to break our brains (and possibly our hearts) in the best way possible. The Odyssey is set to hit theatres on July 17, 2026, and yes, I've already marked my calendar, cleared my schedule, and emotionally prepared myself for another round of existential crisis. See you in line.

Apple's 'F1' movie had a secret weapon at the box office — but it might not help next time

Apple's "F1" movie with Brad Pitt captured the checkered flag in its opening weekend. The action film was boosted by a historically high revenue share from Imax screens. Although Apple will celebrate this win, its next films might not get the same Imax lift. Apple's flashy "F1" movie took first place at the box office this weekend, and it had a secret weapon: Imax. The much-hyped racing film starring Brad Pitt exceeded expectations with a $144 million global debut, including a $55.6 million showing in the US. That's well beyond the $115 million it was forecast to rake in, per The Hollywood Reporter. " F1" was boosted by Imax, which said on Monday that its premium screens generated $28 million for the film, or 19% of its worldwide box-office total. That's the fourth-highest share of global sales ever in a debut, behind only "Dune," "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol," and "Oppenheimer," an Imax spokesperson told Business Insider. US movie-goers were especially likely to pay up for the premium Imax experience. Twenty-three percent of the domestic box office for "F1" was from those who paid to see Pitt in Imax's expanded aspect ratio. That's a similar share to what "Sinners" and "Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning" made from Imax earlier this year. Imax tickets cost significantly more than the typical stub. The going rate for an Imax ticket in early 2025 was $19.51, according to data from research firm EntTelligence cited by The Hollywood Reporter, which also found that the average US movie ticket was $13.82. Similarly, BI found it can cost a whopping $31 to see "F1" in Imax in New York City. Apple is surely thrilled to see such a strong start for "F1" — its first major theatrical hit — no matter how it happened. But it may be too soon to say the Silicon Valley titan has figured out Hollywood. Its strategy of big-budget films with A-list talent hasn't exactly been a resounding success at the box office, as big bets like "Argylle" and "Killers of the Flower Moon" underwhelmed. If Apple needs a legendary Imax run for its theatrical movie strategy to make sense, it may be hard to build on.
