Egypt's Foreign Minister Heads to Brussels for EU Talks
Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Badr Abdelatty, departed for Brussels on Monday to attend the fifth ministerial meeting of foreign ministers from the European Union and the Southern Neighbourhood countries.
The high-level diplomatic gathering comes at a pivotal moment as the European Union prepares to launch the Mediterranean Charter, a comprehensive strategic initiative aimed at redefining its partnership with the countries bordering the southern Mediterranean.
The Charter, expected to be unveiled before the end of 2025, seeks to address shared regional challenges and create a more resilient, cooperative, and secure Mediterranean zone.
Abdelatty's participation in the summit reflects Egypt's growing role as a regional power and strategic partner to the EU. As one of the largest and most influential countries in North Africa, Egypt has long played a central role in Euro-Mediterranean dialogue.
The Brussels meeting is part of an ongoing consultation process that brings together EU member states and their southern partners to shape a common vision for sustainable development, migration governance, energy cooperation, and regional security.
The Mediterranean Charter under discussion aims to respond to pressing issues that transcend national borders. From irregular migration and climate change to energy transitions and food security, the Charter is designed as a holistic framework to guide future collaboration.
For the EU, this initiative is also about reinforcing stability in its immediate neighbourhood, while for Egypt and other southern partners, it represents a platform to secure greater investment, political dialogue, and mutual support in tackling domestic and regional challenges.

Gold Prices Fluctuate Despite Rising Safe-Haven Demand
Waleed Farouk Gold prices, both locally and globally, experienced volatility during trading on Monday, despite the global ounce price climbing to a three-week high, supported by increased demand for gold as a safe-haven asset amid escalating trade tensions between the United States, the European Union, and Mexico. In the local market, gold prices gave up their early gains. The 21-karat gold lost the morning's upward momentum, settling at EGP 4,660 per gram, the same as last week's closing price. Globally, the ounce erased its initial gains, stabilizing at $3,355. Gold prices in the local market were as follows: 24-karat: EGP 5,326, 18-karat: EGP 3,994, 14-karat: EGP 3,107, Gold pound (8 grams of 21k): EGP 37,280 Last week, gold prices rose by EGP 20, starting at EGP 4,640 and closing at EGP 4,660. Globally, the ounce gained $18, moving from $3,337 to $3,355. The recent movements in gold prices have been driven by renewed trade fears, following Washington's announcement of plans to impose 30% tariffs on imports from the EU and Mexico starting in early August, after the failure of recent negotiations to reach a comprehensive agreement. These declarations triggered concern in global markets, prompting investors to hedge through gold, amid warnings of potential negative impacts on international trade flows. Brussels and Mexico described the proposed tariffs as 'unfair and destabilizing.' Meanwhile, the European Commission announced an extension of its suspension of retaliatory measures until early August, in hopes of reaching a diplomatic resolution. In another development, investors are awaiting the release of U.S. inflation data for June, scheduled for Tuesday. These figures are expected to offer insights into the Federal Reserve's interest rate direction over the coming months. Market expectations currently point toward a potential 50 basis-point rate cut before the end of the year. Such a move would likely enhance gold's appeal as a hedge asset that, while non-yielding, tends to outperform in low-interest environments. Data from the SPDR Gold Trust—the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund—showed that its holdings declined by 0.12% on Friday, dropping to 947.64 metric tons from 948.80 metric tons the previous day. Türkiye, Egypt Explore Launch of Joint University, Deeper Education Ties
Israa Farhan Türkiye and Egypt are deepening their collaboration in the education sector, with plans underway to establish a Turkish-Egyptian University and expand academic partnerships. The announcement came from Turkish Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen, following high-level discussions during the visit of the President of Türkiye's Higher Education Council to Cairo. In a post on platform X, Ambassador Şen confirmed that both sides discussed 'implementing the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on higher education', reaching consensus on 'various cooperation models, including the establishment of a Turkish-Egyptian University.' He also noted that 'Turkish universities can open departments in Egypt and are eager to engage with cooperation proposals from Egyptian institutions.' Türkiye currently hosts over 10,000 Egyptian students across its 209 universities as part of a broader internationalization strategy. The ambassador emphasized that 'Türkiye is committed to its internationalization strategy and welcomes Egyptian students.' He added that 'Our Maarif Foundation and education-focused NGOs are open to setting up educational institutions in Egypt.' Highlighting the strategic value of education-industry linkages, Şen stated that 'Türkiye's experience underscores the need to enhance university-industry partnerships and prioritize vocational and technical education to meet development demands.' He also suggested that Turkish firms based in Egypt could partner with local authorities to create 'vocational training centers tailored to industry needs.' Şen concluded by underlining the significance of Türkiye's cooperation with Egypt, calling it 'a leading education hub in the Arab world and Africa.' Environment Minister launches second phase of ‘TeraMid' campaign for just energy transition
Egypt's Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, launched on Monday the second phase of the 'TeraMid' campaign, which promotes a just and sustainable energy transition across the Mediterranean region. Fouad praised the campaign—led by the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED)—as a civil society-driven initiative aligned with global climate commitments, especially efforts to accelerate renewable energy adoption in Mediterranean countries. She noted that Egypt plans to generate 42% of its energy mix from renewables by 2030, having already reached over 7 GW of installed capacity in 2024, supported by ongoing wind and solar projects in Zafarana, Benban, and Gabal El-Zeit. Fouad stressed that investing in renewable energy has proven profitable, particularly in developing economies, but highlighted the need for legislative incentives and stronger grid infrastructure to attract greater private sector participation. She also called for reforms in international climate finance to help ease the debt burden on developing countries. The minister emphasized the role of renewables in safeguarding sectors vulnerable to climate change, notably agriculture and food security, and warned of the serious environmental threats facing the Mediterranean, including rising sea levels and plastic pollution. She further advocated integrating the 'TeraMid' campaign's goals into the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the Barcelona Convention, which Egypt will host in December. Emad Adly, General Coordinator of RAED, said the campaign's second phase will build on the achievements of its first phase, which notably recommended tripling renewable energy deployment in the Mediterranean to reach one terawatt of clean energy by 2030. He added that the next phase will focus on embedding these recommendations into national energy strategies, strengthening environmental journalism, and empowering youth through digital advocacy campaigns promoting clean energy across various sectors. The launch event also featured presentations highlighting the campaign's national and regional milestones, alongside a roundtable discussion exploring Egypt's leadership role in reaching the terawatt target, the challenges ahead, and opportunities for deeper collaboration between government, private sector, and civil society stakeholders.
