China Open set for all-Malaysian mayhem in men's doubles
KUALA LUMPUR: The China Open is shaping up to be a brutal proving ground for Malaysia's top men's doubles pairs, and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are right in the middle of it. While world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are aiming to bounce back from their shock first-round exit at last week's Japan Open, it's BAM's No. 2 pair Wei Chong-Kai Wun who have drawn the short straw in Changzhou. The world No. 7 open their campaign against 23rd-ranked compatriots Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King on Wednesday, with the winners likely to face independent duo Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, the Japan Open quarter-finalists, in the second round. And it doesn't get any easier from there — a potential quarter-final showdown against Aaron-Wooi Yik awaits if results go to script, making it a possible run of three all-Malaysian encounters in a row. Aaron-Wooi Yik, meanwhile, will open against Denmark's world No. 20 Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard of Denmark. "I'm optimistic the men's doubles pairs, especially Aaron-Wooi Yik, will bounce back stronger and deliver improved results in China," said national coaching director Rexy Mainaky. "But the draw is really tough, and it's unfortunate that several of our pairs are stuck in the same quarter. "Wei Chong-Kai Wun have to play Arif-Roy King in the first round, then possibly Azriyn-Wee Kiong, and maybe even Aaron-Wooi Yik in the quarter-finals. It's not ideal, but we're hoping for a better overall showing than we had in Japan." At the Japan Open, Wei Chong-Kai Wun were the only BAM pair to reach the quarter-finals. Aaron-Wooi Yik, meanwhile, suffered a surprise defeat to compatriots Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi in the opening round. World No. 30 Yew Sin-Ee Yi then put together a spirited run to the semi-finals before falling to eventual champions and world No. 3 Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae of South Korea. Yew Sin also drew headlines off the court, with wife and former Japanese world No. 7 Aya Ohori cheering him on from the stands. Her presence was cheekily credited as a "lucky charm" during the duo's impressive campaign in Tokyo. They'll be hoping for another spark of luck in Changzhou, where they open against new Chinese pairing Ren Xiang Yu-Sun Wen Jun on Wednesday. Defending champions Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, who will relinquish their world No. 1 ranking on Tuesday, begin their title defence against South Korea's world No. 49 Kang Min Hyuk-Ki Dong Ju on Wednesday. Also in the fray are world No. 47 Choong Hon Jian-Haikal Nazri, who face a tricky opening match against the scratch Indonesian combination of Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri.

Man United's Rashford eyes fresh start as Barcelona loan move nears completion
LONDON, July 21 — Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is in Spain to finalise a season-long loan move to Barcelona. The 27-year-old arrived in Catalonia on Sunday night after receiving permission from United to complete the transfer formalities, BBC reported Images showing Rashford disembarking from a private jet in Barcelona quickly spread across social media platforms. Negotiations between the Spanish club and United accelerated last week, culminating in a deal being agreed in principle over the weekend. United have now formally approved Rashford's move, which will see him join Barcelona on a 12-month loan with an option to buy. Rashford has been eyeing a move to Barcelona since December, when he signalled his desire for a new challenge after being dropped by head coach Ruben Amorim. This will be Rashford's second loan spell in a year, following a six-month stint with Aston Villa in the second half of last season. He is expected to undergo a medical in Spain early this week and may join Barcelona's pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea, where he could face former United team-mate Jesse Lingard, now at FC Seoul.

Soon Huat-Shevon prepare for speed test at China Open
KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran mixed doubles Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai are once again preparing to cope with the searing pace of world-class rivals as they bid to break their quarter-final curse at the China Open, which starts on Tuesday. The world No. 6 have crashed out at the quarter-final stage in six of their last seven tournaments, with the latest setback coming in a straight-games defeat (21-13, 23-21) to eventual champions Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin of China at the Japan Open on Friday. While they won't face the in-form Zhen Bang-Ya Xin until the semi-finals this week, the Malaysians must first overcome a likely quarter-final clash against world No. 3 Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet of Hong Kong. "They (Zhen Bang-Ya Xin) have a clear advantage over us in terms of speed," said Soon Huat. "Every time we face them, we prepare physically and mentally to cope with that kind of speed. It's very hard to find opponents with that pace to train against daily, so it's actually good to play them regularly. "It was also our first time reaching the Japan Open quarter-finals, and we're hoping to build on that." The Chinese pair's blistering pace has helped them establish an 8-1 head-to-head lead over Soon Huat-Shevon. The Malaysians also trail in records against other top combinations — world No. 1 Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping of China (2-0), Chun Man-Ying Suet (11-1), and Thailand's world No. 5 Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran (5-3). Now aged 35 and 32 respectively, Soon Huat and Shevon may have lost some reflex sharpness, but they still hold the edge over most younger pairs. The Malaysians are expected to beat Indonesia's world No. 14 Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu in their opening match on Wednesday, before a potential second-round clash with Denmark's world No. 21 Mads Vestergaard-Christine Busch. Meanwhile, Toh Ee Wei has declared herself fit after taking a knock from partner Chen Tang Jie's racquet during their semi-final defeat to Zhen Bang-Ya Xin in Japan. "My hand is good, thanks for all the support. We're on the way to China," she posted on TikTok on Sunday. National coaching director Rexy Mainaky also confirmed Ee Wei's fitness. "She just felt some pain at the point of impact, but she's fine now and good to go." Tang Jie-Ee Wei will begin their China Open campaign against American pair Presley Smith-Jennie Gai (world No. 29) on Tuesday. World No. 13 Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin will be out to snap a run of four first-round exits when they face China's world No. 44 Gao Jia Xuan-Wu Meng Ying. Independent pair Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien (No. 34) will take on India's world No. 33 Rohan Kapoor-Shivani Gadde.
