Durban security guard shot dead during robbery
ALS paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said their crew, together with Amawele medics, responded to a fatal shooting on Lenny Naidoo Drive in Chatsworth just after 9.45am.
Paramedics arrived to find there had been an alleged robbery at a store and the security officer, who is believed to have tried to stop the suspects, was shot.
He said the man, who was in his forties, sustained gunshot wounds to his chest.
'Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene,' said Jamieson.
A bystander sustained minor injuries and was stabilised at the scene before being transported to hospital.
Police were on the scene and would be investigating further, Jamieson said. .

Justice department condemns killing of Gqeberha prosecutor
The Department of Justice has expressed shock and outrage following the fatal shooting of a Gqeberha-based prosecutor, Tracy Brown, who was gunned down outside her home in Young Park on Thursday afternoon. Brown, a regional court prosecutor stationed at the New Brighton magistrate's court, was reportedly shot as she arrived at her residence in Lotton Street. The brazen daylight attack comes just months after another prosecutor was fatally shot in Mthatha — both killings occurring in the Eastern Cape. Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi condemned the killing, calling it a 'barbaric act' and urging law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in the hunt for those responsible. 'I am deeply saddened and outraged by the killing of Ms Brown. These senseless acts of violence against officers of the court are unacceptable,' she said. While the motive for the killing remains unclear, Kubayi called on anyone with information to assist the authorities in their investigation. The minister also extended her condolences to Brown's family, friends, and colleagues and emphasised the urgent need to bolster security for prosecutors — especially in the Eastern Cape. 'The existing policy on prosecutor safety includes both employee assistance and close protection. However, the recent attacks reveal alarming gaps in implementation. The death of a prosecutor is one too many,' she said. Shop fined R600,000 over cigarettes must donate 504 desks to schools
A Mpumalanga store found guilty of selling illicit cigarettes has been fined R600,000 and ordered to buy 504 durable, high-quality double-seater desks for local schools. Initially, the shopkeeper and two directors of the business were charged but charges were withdrawn against the individuals after the company directors entered a plea bargain with the state, and only the company was charged. According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Col Magoseni Nkosi, more than 4,000 packets of illicit cigarettes valued at R107,700 were seized during a raid in September 2024. The shopkeeper, Riaz Moolla, 42, was arrested by the Hawks Secunda-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit. The two company directors, Fatima Moolla, 62, and Suliman Ismail Moolla, 67, were also charged. The provincial head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Maj-Gen Nico Gerber commended the investigation team, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the judiciary for their hard work on the case. 'It is an interesting sentence. Criminals are again out of pocket due to their crimes. The community is benefiting from this sentence, and it will definitely help the next generation in their education,' Gerber said. The company was sentenced for contravention of the Tobacco Products Act, contravention of the Customs and Excise Act and contravention of the VAT Act.
