Tick-tock for TikTok as Donald Trump teases a sale could be close

ITV News12 hours ago
After months of speculation and multiple bids from would-be American buyers, the US division of TikTok may finally be getting a new owner.
President Donald Trump teased over the weekend that there is a buyer, whom he will announce in two weeks, which could secure the app's long-term future in the United States.
'We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way. I think I'll need probably China approval, and I think President Xi will probably do it,' President Donald Trump said on Fox News.
He added: 'It's a group of very wealthy people.'
TikTok's parent company ByteDance has until September 17 to sell their US operations to an American owner or face being banned in the US.
The sale of the app centers around security concerns over how the data is stored and gathered with the apps proximity to the Chinese government.
Trump has repeatedly delayed enforcement of the TikTok sale-or-ban law signed by then-President Joe Biden last year — which was originally set to go into effect in January - in hopes of making a deal for an American owner to acquire the app.
The app is used by about 170 million Americans to find news, entertainment, community and, in some cases, to make a living.
It remains unclear whether the Chinese government would bless the sale of TikTok by its China-based owner.
In April, a deal that would have transferred majority control of TikTok's US operations to American ownership was nearly finalised, but it fell apart after Trump announced additional tariffs on China.
This forced the White House to announce another 75-day delay to keep the app operational in the United States. Trump extended the deadline again by 90 days earlier this month.
'Discussions with China regarding the sale of TikTok have been ongoing at the highest level, and they will continue,' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a briefing Monday.
'As you know, we have another 90-day extension, and it's just to continue to work out this deal and make sure that TikTok stays on for the American people - that's the president's main goal in this, while protecting their privacy and their security.'
ByteDance and TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday.
Here's what we know about who could buy TikTok.
Group of unnamed investors, tech companies had already been primed to buy TikTok
Perhaps the most likely buyer for TikTok is a group of investors primed to acquire it in April before tariffs caused negotiations to stall.
Under that deal, a number of venture capital firms, private equity funds and tech giants were set to invest in a company that would control TikTok's US operations, with ByteDance retaining a 20% stake in the spinoff company, a source familiar with the deal told ITV News' partner CNN at the time.
For the deal to comply with the law, ByteDance can own no more than 20% of the platform. The law also states that the app's US operations cannot coordinate with ByteDance on the app's algorithm or data-sharing practices.
At the time of Trump's April extension, the White House did not name the parties with whom it had been discussing a TikTok takeover deal.
Earlier this year, multiple news outlets, including Politico, NPR and Bloomberg reported that Oracle — TikTok's current US technology partner — was a top contender to take over the app's US operations, potentially in partnership with the app's American investors, such as private equity firm General Atlantic and investment firm Susquehanna International Group.
Oracle and Susquehanna did not immediately respond Monday, a representative for General Atlantic declined to comment.
Former Los Angeles Dodgers owner and Project Liberty founder Frank McCourt
Frank McCourt, alongside 'Shark Tank' star Kevin O'Leary, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian have formed a group called 'The People's Bid for TikTok.'
They've said they would aim to update the app's technology to give users and creators more control over their data and experience on the platform.
'Every day that passes without a qualified divestiture of TikTok puts Americans at greater risk of manipulation and surveillance,' a spokesperson for Project Liberty said Monday in a statement to CNN.
'The People's Bid remains the only solution under consideration that fully satisfies the law and moves TikTok to a made-in-America tech stack. We look forward to working with members of the administration, policymakers, and our many outstanding partners in The People's Bid to achieve this goal.'
Mr Beast
Another potential buyer group includes social media influencer Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, and Employer.com founder Jesse Tinsley. A representative for the group declined to comment on the status of the group's bid on Monday.
Perplexity
The artificial intelligence firm Perplexity said in March that it was seeking to acquire TikTok. In a statement at the time, the company said it was 'singularly positioned to rebuild the TikTok algorithm without creating a monopoly, combining world-class technical capabilities with Little Tech independence.' Perplexity did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

More than half of Americans - and 83% of Democrats - say ICE has gone ‘too far' in arresting migrants: poll

More than half of Americans believe that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has gone 'too far' in its pursuit of arresting migrants, according to a new poll. While 54 percent said ICE has used its power too aggressively, the sentiment was even greater among Democrats at 83 percent, according to a poll by PBS News, NP and Marist. Nearly half of Republicans, by contrast, said ICE's actions are appropriate and an additional 31 percent said the agency had not gone far enough in enforcing President Donald Trump's mass deportation agenda. The vast majority of Americans (80 percent) support the U.S. government's deportation of migrants without permanent legal status who have been convicted of a violent crime. Half of those currently in ICE custody have not been convicted or charged with any crime, ICE data shows. In fact, ICE is arresting more non-criminals than ever before, according to the latest data. Americans also overwhelmingly agree (82 percent) that a U.S. president should obey federal court rulings, even if the president does not like the ruling. On how Trump is handling immigration as a whole, 43 percent of residents approve, while 52 percent disapprove. The poll follows a month of heightened tension over immigration as protests ignited in Los Angeles against ICE, and Trump called in the National Guard. On Tuesday, the president toured a new Florida immigration detention center dubbed 'Alligator Alcatraz' as the administration plows ahead with its agenda. A similar poll last week found that more Americans (64 percent) favor providing undocumented migrants a pathway to legal status over deportation, while 31 percent said they preferred deportation. Respondents in the Quinnipiac University poll of registered voters were asked for their preference out of the two options 'if [they] had to choose.' Six months ago, the same poll found that 55 percent favored providing undocumented migrants with a pathway to legal status in the U.S. The poll found that 56 percent of voters disapprove of how ICE is doing its job, while 39 percent said they approve. The vast majority of Democrats disapprove (89 percent) while Republicans largely approve (77 percent).

Trump threatens to arrest man favored to be NYC mayor and strip his citizenship

President Donald Trump has threatened to arrest a man who is the favorite to be New York City's next mayor and strip him of his US citizenship. Zohran Mamdani, 33, a democratic socialist, hours after officially winning the Democratic primary for mayor on Tuesday, defied Trump after amid a series of warnings from the Republican president. 'The President of the United States just threatened to have me arrested, stripped of my citizenship, put in a detention camp and deported,' wrote Mamdani on Instagram. 'Not because I have broken any law but because I will refuse to let ICE terrorize our city.' Got a story? Trump pokes fun at Marjorie Taylor Greene's boyfriend saying the MAGA firebrand is not 'easy' to date

President Donald Trump poked fun at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to her boyfriend on Tuesday, questioning whether it's easy to date the firebrand Republican. While on a tour of 'Alligator Alcatraz,' a new Florida migrant detention facility boasting a moat full of dangerous reptiles, the president crossed paths with Real America's Voice reporter Brian Glenn. Walking with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, the president introduced the pair to Glenn. 'Hi Brian,' Trump greets the reporter. 'This is the boyfriend, very lucky, of Marjorie Taylor Greene,' the president told Noem and DeSantis. 'Do you think it's easy being with Marjorie?' Trump asked DeSantis with a smile. The governor immediately began cracking up with laughter before the crew kept on with their tour. Noem responded by noting a video of MTG doing a crossfit workout with her daughter. 'She was working out pretty hard this weekend,' she told Glenn before following the president into another room. 'Marjorie is incredibly tough and never backs down when it comes to fighting for her district and her country,' Glenn said in a statement provided to the Daily Mail. 'She's also the sweetest person I know, and she loves this country and President Trump with all her heart.' Glenn and Greene have been reportedly dating since late 2022. On X, however, Glenn posted a different message in response to the playful presidential inquiry. 'I'm not going to answer that…kidding!!' he wrote in response to Trump's question about how 'easy' it is to date the congresswoman, adding she 'is a joy to be with.' Glenn, 55, is among a growing list of right-wing pundits who have gained increased access to the White House during Trump's second term. He frequently reports from the White House grounds and, as evidenced by Tuesday's teasing, travels to cover Trump while the president is on the road. The joke at MTG's expense comes as the Republican has loudly pushed back on portions of the president's marquee legislative plan dubbed the 'Big, Beautiful Bill.' Greene specifically took issue with an AI provision that would hamper states from regulating the nascent technology over the next decade. 'I am adamantly opposed to this, and it is a violation of state rights,' she said of the AI provision. The language was eventually struck from Trump's mega-bill by Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., which passed the Senate on Tuesday. Still on Tuesday, Greene unfurled an ominous prediction about the House's ability to swiftly pass the Senate version of the Big Beautiful Bill. 'There's no way that [Speaker] Johnson has the votes in the House for this,' Greene told Steve Bannon. 'I think it's far from over.'
