Where does Clemson rank in preseason US LBM Coaches Poll for 2025? Full top 25 unveiled

USA Today13 hours ago
Only three Saturdays remain without Clemson football, and while there's plenty of hype surrounding the Tigers entering the 2025 college football season, we now have a glimpse of how high the expectations are for Dabo Swinney's team.
Monday saw release of the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. Clemson debuted just outside the top five at No. 6, one spot below No. 5 Notre Dame and one spot ahead of the Oregon Ducks at No. 7. The LSU Tigers, Clemson's opponent in the season opener on Aug. 30 at Memorial Stadium, were ranked No. 9.
The Texas Longhorns were ranked No. 1 in the preseason Coaches Poll, followed by the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 2. Within the ACC, only two other teams besides Clemson were ranked: the Miami Hurricanes at No. 10 and the SMU Mustangs at No. 15.
The Tigers were ranked No. 14 in last year's preseason poll. With Cade Klubnik having a stellar junior season at quarterback (3,639 passing yards, 36 touchdowns), Clemson went 10-4 overall and won their record 22nd ACC championship in school history to earn a trip to the first 12-team College Football Playoff. The Tigers were ranked No. 11 in the final Coaches Poll last season.
Dabo Swinney enters his 17th full season as Clemson's head coach in 2025. The Tigers were the runaway favorite to win the ACC in the preseason conference media poll, released last week following the conclusion of ACC Kickoff.

2025 NFL, CFB, MLB Best Bets, Predictions By Chris 'The Bear' Fallica

National Football League 2025 NFL, CFB, MLB Best Bets, Predictions By Chris 'The Bear' Fallica Published Aug. 4, 2025 10:21 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link "Bear Bets" are real wagers that Chris "The Bear" Fallica is actually making. There's something incredibly special about fall sports. Between college football, NFL and MLB postseason, there is fun to be had for all — particularly when it comes to laying a few wagers. That's where I come in. One of the wagers below features Kyle Shanahan, and it's what I believe to be a really solid bet. Let's take a look at where I'm sprinkling my cash this week. Penn State to make the CFP This is my favorite bet in college football this season. No team in the sport is more predictable or trustworthy than Penn State, which usually hammers the teams it is supposed to, and loses to top-five, top-10-type teams. This puts the Nittany Lions at a 10-2 floor, as they have both Oregon and Ohio State on the slate. The Oregon game is at State College, so let's say PSU wins that game. Maybe the game at Iowa is tricky? Potentially lose at Ohio State? That's it. Even the detractors of Drew Allar have to think Penn State is returning to the College Football Playoff behind a powerful running game and elite defense, even without Abdul Carter. Some people do not like laying a price like this, but I have no issue doing so. A 10-2 record and a CFP berth for Penn State — book it. PICK: Penn State (-290) to make the CFP Penn State HC James Franklin on what makes Drew Allar special Kyle Shanahan to win Coach of the Year Just about everything that could go wrong for the 49ers last year did. Injuries to Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and others. Blown late leads. It was just one of those years in the Bay after another agonizing Super Bowl loss. There isn't a ton of depth here, but injury luck doesn't tend to repeat itself in consecutive years, meaning expect the Niners to be healthier this season. The schedule is about as easy as could be coming off a 6-11 season, and, with a win total of 10.5, the Niners are supposed to be good. ADVERTISEMENT Robert Saleh returns to San Francisco to coach a defense that has played as if it missed his leadership over the last couple of seasons. Maybe Shanahan doesn't fit the mold of a young head coach or a head coach from a team that's going to surprise, but there's a chance the Niners could post something like 12-5 and win the division, given that schedule, especially if the concerns over Rams QB Matthew Stafford are realized. I just don't get how guys like Aaron Glenn are shorter-priced in this market, given how the Jets are going to win like six games. PICK: Kyle Shanahan (20-1) to win Coach of the Year Clayton McCullough to win NL Manager of the Year Okay, by now we've all made the joke, "Can you name the Marlins manager?" But Clayton McCullough and the Marlins might be getting the last laugh. The former Dodgers first-base coach has Miami on the cusp of a .500 record after sweeping the Yankees. While it might be a little too much to ask him to reach the playoffs given the strength of the current NL wild cards, it's not unreasonable to think he's in the mix for NL Manager of the Year consideration. This has been a lineup and rotation in flux all season and if Miami actually got some decent pitching from Sandy Alcántara in the first half of the season, it might actually have a legit chance at a wild card. Brewers manager Pat Murphy is a big favorite here, and I guess he should be. But in terms of doing more with less, McCullough certainly deserves consideration if the Marlins finish with a winning record. Obviously, I'm late to the party here in terms of the number, but I'll jump in now in case they continue this hot streak. PICK: Clayton McCullough (23-1) to win NL Manager of the Year Chris "The Bear" Fallica has covered sports for nearly three decades. While college football has been his focus, he also enjoys the NFL, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, MLB, NHL and Horse Racing, with an "occasional" wager on such events. Chris recently won the inaugural Circa Football Invitational and finished in the Top 10 of the Golden Nugget Football Contest. He's a multiple-time qualifier for the NHC Handicapping Championship. Coaches Poll Preseason Top 25 Unveiled Ahead Of 2025 College Football Season

Coaches Poll Preseason Top 25 Unveiled Ahead Of 2025 College Football Season originally appeared on The Spun. The time has finally come for the Coaches Poll to release its preseason top 25 rankings. For the most part, Texas and Ohio State have been considered the top two programs heading into the 2025 college football season. It's no surprise that there's a ton of hype surrounding Arch Manning and the Longhorns. As for the Buckeyes, they've earned a ton of respect by winning the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. Despite all the buzz surrounding Texas and Ohio State this offseason, ESPN previously had Penn State ranked No. 1 in the country. "After finally turning the corner under coach James Franklin in 2024, the Nittany Lions look loaded for bear this coming season. With Allar, Allen and Singleton returning, Penn State should have one of the most balanced offenses in the FBS, especially if Allar takes the next step as a downfield passer. Adding Pena, Ross and Hudson was critical; Penn State's receivers didn't have a reception in a 27-24 loss to Notre Dame in a CFP semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl. Pena, a slot receiver, had 84 catches for 941 yards with nine scores in 2024," ESPN's Mark Schlabach wrote. On Monday, we learned that the Coaches Poll doesn't support ESPN's way-too-early rankings. Texas was ranked No. 1 in the preseason top 25, with Ohio State claiming the No. 2 spot. Here's the full top 25: Texas Ohio State Penn State Georgia Notre Dame Clemson Oregon Alabama LSU Miami Arizona State Illinois South Carolina Michigan Ole Miss SMU Florida Tennessee Indiana Kansas State Texas A&M Iowa State BYU Texas Tech Boise State Plenty of fans are debating the bottom half of this top 25. Apparently, they don't love BYU and Texas A&M's rankings. Others are arguing that Clemson and Georgia were disrespected in the preseason Coaches Poll. Luckily for the college football world, it won't be long before the season begins. After all, Week 0 is just around the Poll Preseason Top 25 Unveiled Ahead Of 2025 College Football Season first appeared on The Spun on Aug 4, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

Kerry Carpenter crushes key home run in Detroit Tigers' 6-3 win vs new-look Twins

Not only did the Minnesota Twins part ways with one-third of the players on their roster, they also shipped out some of their best players at the trade deadline: closer Jhoan Duran to the Philadelphia Phillies, reliever Griffin Jax to the Tampa Bay Rays and shortstop Carlos Correa to the Houston Astros. Two years ago, the Twins won the American League Central. In 2025, the Detroit Tigers are the AL Central leaders, and looked like in Monday night. The Tigers reminded their division foes of their current dominance in a 6-3 win over the new-look Twins on Monday, Aug. 4, in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park. The Twins didn't go down easy, but the Tigers (66-48) pulled away with three runs in the sixth inning, including a 437-foot two-run home run from Kerry Carpenter off right-handed reliever Noah Davis with the fans chanting his first name. Carpenter celebrated the key home run by flipping his bat, holding both arms in the air and trotting to first base. After Gleyber Torres tied the game on a groundout, Carpenter refused to swing at back-to-back pitches for balls before demolishing a 94 mph sinker at the top of the strike zone for a two-run homer, putting the Tigers ahead, 5-3. It was his 19th homer in 85 games this season. The Tigers padded their lead in the seventh inning, thanks to Dillon Dingler's solo home run off right-handed reliever Erasmo Ramírez. He pulled a down-and-in sinker over the wall in left field. It was Dingler's 10th homer. Dingler is hitting .274 with a .749 OPS across 85 games in his first full season in the big leagues. [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] Casey Mize's quality start Right-hander Casey Mize allowed three runs on four hits and zero walks with four strikeouts in six innings, throwing 67 pitches. He entered Monday's game with an 11.42 ERA in his last three starts — following a 2.63 ERA in his first 15 starts. This was a step forward. In 2025, Mize now owns a 3.50 ERA in 19 starts. The Twins tagged Mize for three solo home runs: Ryan Jeffers hit a 94.4 mph sinker for a 420-foot homer in the first inning; Trevor Larnach hit a splitter for a 434-foot homer in the fifth inning; Matt Wallner hit a splitter for a 437-foot homer in the sixth inning. Both splitters were poorly executed pitches. The homer from Wallner landed in the shrubs in center field. Aside from the homers, Mize gave up just one hit on a single to Edouard Julien in the sixth inning, then erased Julien from the bases when Austin Martin grounded into a double play. Wenceel Pérez's development The Tigers fell behind on the scoreboard, but Wenceel Pérez revived them when he hit a two-run home run off right-hander Travis Adams with one out in the fifth inning. Until then, Adams had shut out the Tigers. The Pérez homer tied the game, 2-2. It was Pérez's ninth home run in 54 games (and 197 plate appearances) in his second MLB season — following nine homers in 112 games (and 425 plate appearances) as a rookie last season. Not only has Pérez developed in the power department from Year 1 to Year 2, but he has also improved his batting average (.242 to .262) and his OPS (.683 to .805). For the Twins, Adams allowed two runs on four hits and zero walks with seven strikeouts in five innings, throwing 63 pitches. He generated 16 whiffs on 33 swings for an incredible 48.5% whiff rate.
