Covid jabs not linked to sudden deaths: Centre
NEW DELHI: There is no direct link between Covid-19 vaccination and sudden deaths in the country, Union health ministry said Wednesday, a day after Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah claimed over 20 people had died of heart attack in a month in Hassan district.
The CM said "hasty approval and distribution" of the vaccine could be a reason.
The Centre said studies by ICMR and
AIIMS
have established there was no link between the jabs and the deaths, adding, "Sudden cardiac deaths can result from many factors, including genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing conditions and post-Covid complications." tnn
Karnataka panel to file heart attack report in 10 days
Several studies worldwide have recently indicated that Covid vaccines could be a cause for the increasing number of heart attacks," the Karnataka CM had said, adding a committee of experts has been formed under the leadership of Dr Ravindranath, director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, to identify the exact cause and they have been instructed to submit a study report within 10 days.
Dr Amit Bhushan Sharma, cardiologist at Paras Health in Gurugram, said in most cases of cardiac arrest deaths, the root causes are underlying health conditions like undiagnosed coronary artery disease, inherited heart disorders, or lifestyle factors such as chronic stress, obesity, smoking, and lack of physical activity.

Bengaluru: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday criticised Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for suggesting a link between Covid-19 vaccines developed in India and the sudden deaths. Speaking to the media, on the sidelines of IIT Madras Alumni Association's Sangam 2025 event in Bengaluru, Piyush Goyal praised the Indian scientists for developing Covid vaccine in record time and the pharmaceutical sector for making it cost-effective. 'Fake narratives can't dilute the extraordinary work done by our scientists and the pharma industry in our fight against Covid,' said Goyal. His comments come in the wake of Siddaramaiah's recent post on social media platform X on 'the hasty approval and distribution of the Covid vaccine to the public'. The CM linked it to the more than 20 heart attack-related deaths seen in Karnataka's Hassan district in just 40 days. The Union Health Ministry, along with several scientists as well as pharma associations, has denied any link between Covid vaccines and the reported sudden deaths. A joint clarification from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) stated that ongoing surveillance and analyses have not revealed any significant deviation in patterns of cardiac-related deaths since before the pandemic. 'I feel that the Chief Minister here does not disrespect, he insults, and when he insults our scientists, our pharmacy, then I do not know what is the motive behind it?' Goyal said. 'Apologise to the Indian scientists and the pharmaceutical sector,' he added. He also asked whether the CM and the Congress are working at the behest of foreign powers. Are these the foreign powers whose agenda they are running here, are the foreign powers who want to lure India's pharmacy, are they troubled by India's economic progress and development,' Goyal said.

Bengaluru: Rejecting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's claim linking the rapid rollout of Covid vaccinations to heart attack cases, BJP leader D. V. Sadananda Gowda on Saturday said that the Congress leader was among the first to get vaccinated and is perfectly healthy. Former Chief Minister Gowda taunted Siddaramaiah, saying, 'It is because of the good health he gained from the Covid vaccine that Siddaramaiah is now claiming he will complete the full five-year term as Chief Minister and even lead the Congress to victory in the next election.' 'As soon as the vaccination drive began, Siddaramaiah ran to the Centre and got himself vaccinated. Nothing has happened to his body. We sincerely wish that nothing ever does,' Gowda stated. However, CM Siddaramaiah must exercise restraint, Gowda said. Responding to this, Kiran Majumdar Shaw stated that, 'COVID-19 vaccines developed in India were approved under the Emergency Use Authorisation framework, following rigorous protocols aligned with global standards for safety and efficacy. To suggest that these vaccines were 'hastily' approved is factually incorrect and contributes to public misinformation.' On Shaw's assertion, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remarked that seeking clarity does not amount to spreading misinformation.

Oppn: CPM coming up with ‘justification capsules'
Thrissur/T'puram: Opposition leader V D Satheesan on Saturday asserted that Congress would continue agitations demanding the resignation of health minister Veena George in the backdrop of a woman's death in the building collapse on Kottayam medical college premises. Speaking with the media in Chalakudy, Satheesan alleged that CPM leaders were coming up with several 'justification capsules' even though state's health system was on ventilator and the minister was in the dock (where accused are put in courts). "The health minister has been repeating mistakes one after the other and has been mouthing what PR agencies had briefed," he said. "Opposition hadn't started criticising health department just after Bindu's death (Kottayam MCH) or after the 'exposes' by Dr Haris Chirakkal (Thiruvananthapuram MCH). We had been exposing govt for fleecing crores of rupees by selling medicines, which are past expiry dates, through medical services corporation. This govt concealed 27,000 Covid deaths and launched PR propaganda claiming that Kerala was the best state in the world in handling Covid pandemic. The state now has the highest score in the spread of infectious diseases," he alleged. Dismissing criticisms that opposition leaders have become 'peddlers of death', Satheesan said CPM leaders deserved that description. Health deparment a den of corruption: Ramesh Senior Congress functionary Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday sharply criticised health minister Veena George, calling her incompetent and one who caused serious lapses in the health sector. The chief minister should have sought Veena's resignation before he travelled to the US, he added. "Kerala's health department has turned into a den of corruption and mismanagement, where the lives of ordinary people are undervalued. Most ordinary people rely on govt hospitals. The comptroller and auditor general's report submitted in the assembly on Jan 22, 2025, reveals the extent of deterioration in Kerala's health sector, said Ramesh. "The report highlights that expired medicines were purchased in large quantities and distributed through govt hospitals. These medicines, which wholesalers return to medical stores, were bought by govt for crores of rupees, benefiting companies and intermediaries with huge profits and commissions," he said. An independent agency should investigate the corruption and commission transactions in the health department, he demanded.
