Woman teacher from Mumbai school arrested for sexually assaulting 16-year-old male student
The English language teacher, who is married, took the minor to luxury hotels where she allegedly abused him, the official said.
'The woman, who was taken into custody last week, was so obsessed with the minor that she tried to contact him even after he passed out of school this year,' police said.
According to the police official, the accused became attracted to her student during various meetings in connection with the school's annual function in December 2023. She allegedly made her first sexual advance in January 2024.
Police said a friend of the accused encouraged the then Class 10 boy to accept the illegal relationship, saying that affairs between older women and teenage boys had become quite common nowadays.
The friend, who is also booked, would say that the woman teacher and the boy were 'made for teacher', the official said, citing the FIR.
Soon after the accused teacher started taking the teenager to expensive hotels to sexually assault him, the student developed acute anxiety. She then allegedly gave him some anti-anxiety pills, the official said.
The teacher would also often allegedly get the boy drunk before abusing him.
The boy's family learnt about the exploitation after they noticed a change in his behaviour. However, they kept quiet, thinking he would finish school in a few months and the matter would end, the official said.
The boy cleared his Class 10 exam a few months ago and left the school, but slipped into depression, said the official.
His family decided to speak up when the accused again sent the boy a message, through their domestic staff, to meet her, the official said.
The woman teacher has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice Act, the official added.

As many as 246 inter-state accused involved in drug trafficking were arrested in the past six months in comparison to 161 during this period last year. In an indication that police are not just going after individuals, there were 850 cases in six months involving two or more arrests in a single case— up from 471 in 2024. As many as 3,051 people were arrested in the first half of this year which is 28% more than last year. Police sources say the strategy now is to track both the street-level suppliers and the big players behind the scenes, including financiers by using tougher legal tools to clamp down on repeat offenders. This year, 39 people were detained under the PIT-NDPS Act — up from just 8 last year – that allows preventive detention of up to one year without trial. Police sources say that they have also started going after the assets linked to drug trade profits. So far, property worth ₹87 lakh have been seized, compared to ₹23.40 lakh in 2024. 'The first half of 2025 signals a shift in Haryana's overall strategy. The focus now is on prevention and disruption, not just reaction,' says OP Singh, HSNCB chief. 'The state is moving towards a long-term plan to break the supply chains, seize the money, and go after the big players. It is a tougher road, but Haryana seems ready as war on drugs is escalating and entering a new phase.'

Under the law, a surety is typically a relative or friend of the accused who guarantees payment if the individual fails to appear in court. The law mandates that a surety must be an Indian citizen with a fixed place of residence. However, concerns have been raised about the increasing number of individuals who sign surety bonds as a business. According to a Punjab government legal officer, the law allows a person to sign a surety bond in only one case. 'It has come to light that some people are exploiting the system by charging hefty amounts to sign surety bonds for repeat drug offenders, who often struggle to find supporters,' the law officer revealed. A recent analysis by the ANTF found that some individuals have signed bail bonds in as many as 10 cases. This has raised concerns about the integrity of the legal process, especially in drug-related cases. A senior official from the ANTF said: 'When a relative or friend signs a bail bond, there is a sense of social pressure on the accused not to reoffend. But when sureties are paid, the accused may feel no pressure to change their behaviour.' Authorities say that in addition to targeting repeat surety signers, the government is exploring other measures to strengthen the legal framework and plug loopholes that drug offenders have been exploiting. This crackdown is part of the Punjab government's broader efforts to tackle the state's growing drug problem. The state's 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign, launched on March 1, has seen the registration of 12,341 FIRs and the arrest of 20,180 accused individuals over the past four months.

23-yr-old man shot dead over gang rivalry in Punjab's Phagwara
A 23-year-old man, identified as Navjot Kumar, was shot dead in Gandwa village on Wednesday night, allegedly over an old gang rivalry, police said on Thursday.
