Ahmedabad: Whether it is the first pregnancy or the fourth, the girl child continues to be rejected.
This was the harsh reality exposed by Ahmedabad rural police after they busted a
racket involving home-based sex determination and illegal abortions.

In one case, a woman aborted her first pregnancy solely because it was a girl.
Another woman, a paramedic, chose to have an abortion when she was pregnant with her third daughter.
A 22-year-old woman, already a mother of four girls, terminated her fifth pregnancy after learning it was another girl.
"This case shows that all these abortions were driven by negative attitudes toward the girl child," said a senior officer of Ahmedabad rural police.
"Some of these women are professionals, others are housewives, but all acted under family pressure, especially from husbands and in-laws."
On May 27, police arrested nurse Hemlata Darji and radiologist Harshad Acharya, who allegedly carried out sex determination tests and abortions for Rs 15,000.
Police said Acharya performed tests at his Odhav clinic, while Darji carried out the abortions at homes or a Bavla guesthouse.
"These were not random acts but part of a planned service. The accused selected clients carefully, mostly through referrals," the officer said.
"The clients didn't even visit the clinics. Blood samples were picked up by a lab courier, and abortions were done at home."
Officers said that the nurse was well-networked and would offer her help in getting rid of a female fetus.
Police found that 25 tests were conducted after which eight female fetuses were aborted.

Another police officer said that five people, including Acharya, Darji, a guesthouse owner, a woman who underwent abortion, and her sister-in-law, were arrested in the case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act charges.

They reveal that many of the contact numbers displayed in public places to attract customers and therapists as part of the advertisement campaign have been found operated by unknown persons from remote locations. Meanwhile, the entrepreneurs behind the registered wellness centres and spas in the city appear to be in support of the ongoing police checks and the verification of their staff. According to them, such prompt action will only endorse the credibility of the approved ventures and expose the fake ones who encourage exploitation. The fraudsters in the sector are also spoiling the entry of many newly trained professionals to the field, they allege. 'As approved centres, we run this business by complying with all the rules and regulations in the sector. Also, we appoint only well-trained staff to attend to the customers,' says the owner of a newly opened wellness spa in Kozhikode city. It is high time the police exposed the nameless operators who encourage illegal business and spoil the name of approved entrepreneurs in the sector, he adds.

‘Black magic' horror in Bengaluru: Woman slits pet dog's throat, hides body at home
A woman hailing from West Bengal has allegedly killed one of her pet Labradors as a "sacrifice" by strangling him and kept its decomposing body in her Bengaluru apartment for several days, in what is believed to be a case of occult or ritualistic practices. The accused, Triparna Paik, slit the throat of one of her three Labrador dogs and then wrapped the body in cloth inside her apartment in Mahadevapura, NDTV reported. The foul smell from the decomposed canine brought the scene to the attention of neighbours, who then alerted the Bengaluru civic body (BBMP). When officials arrived at the scene, Paik resisted their entry and even threatened to commit suicide, prompting them to call the police. Inside the apartment, authorities found the decomposed remains of one dog and two others suffering from severe neglect. Triparna, who earlier had four Labradors, had reportedly lost one of them four months ago. The apartment was decorated with pictures of deities and puja items, leading authorities to believe that a "tantric" or black magic ritual may have been performed, NDTV reported. The post-mortem report revealed that the dog had died around four days earlier. Officials said the flat's sealed condition and lack of ventilation led to a strong, unbearable stench, raising health concerns among neighbouring residents. A case has been filed under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has stated that the surviving dogs are currently being assessed for rescue and rehabilitation.

Businessman stabbed with screwdriver in Bengaluru hotel over horse racing feud: Report
A horse racing trip turned violent for a Mumbai-based businessman who was stabbed in a Bengaluru hotel parking lot, allegedly by the brother of a horse trainer he had fired a year ago. A case has been registered under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to a report by Times of India, the shocking incident unfolded at a star hotel near the Bengaluru Race Course on June 22 and led to the arrest of three men, including the former trainer. The victim, 47-year-old Suchit Jayaraj Shah, a Marine Drive resident and avid racing enthusiast, had travelled to Bengaluru to attend a horse-racing event along with a friend, the report added. Watch) The duo checked into a hotel where, unbeknownst to him, his former trainer Jasbhir Singh, accompanied by his younger brother Sunny and an associate named Billa, had also checked in, allegedly with revenge in mind. According to Shah's complaint, tensions had been simmering ever since he fired Jasbhir a year ago due to professional disagreements. Jasbhir had reportedly issued threats following the fallout, accusing Shah of tarnishing his reputation. On the morning of the incident, Sunny attempted to contact Shah via WhatsApp and then had the hotel reception call Shah's room to say he was waiting at the lobby, the report further added. Shah, along with his friend Sameer, went downstairs where Sunny asked them to wait for Jasbhir, who never turned up. When Shah decided to leave after waiting for 15 minutes, Sunny and Billa allegedly became aggressive, threatening to kill him unless he stepped outside. Police said the two men forcibly led Shah to the parking area where Sunny hit him on the head and then stabbed him with a screwdriver, accusing him of ruining Jasbhir's career. As Shah cried for help, hotel staff and guests rushed to the scene. Sameer tried to intervene but was restrained by Billa during the attack. While the attackers fled, Shah was taken to a nearby hospital and later filed a police complaint. Acting swiftly, Bengaluru police arrested Jasbhir, Sunny, and Billa. A case has been registered under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said the accused claimed that Shah's actions had damaged Jasbhir's career and reputation in horse racing circles.
