Kolkata: "A govt of thieves" was running the country resulting in "the procession of deaths", CM
said on Monday alluding to last week's multiple tragedies in Ahmedabad, Uttarakhand and Pune in which nearly 290 people had died.

Banerjee, slamming protesting BJP MLAs in the Bengal assembly for their corruption jibes, asked them to have "some shame". "The 2026 Bengal polls will reduce you to a big zero. People know your politics by now," she said, accusing BJP of "depriving Bengal's poor" even as it failed to halt "the procession of deaths in various mishaps" in BJP-governed states.
"A half-pant minister, who did not find time to go to Manipur even once, came to my neighbourhood (in Kalighat) to protest against an incident that had taken place four-five days ago.
He then hurled slippers at a Sikh cop," Banerjee said without naming Bengal BJP president and junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar. "I, too, can go to your home. And, if you love slippers so much, please open a slippers stall," she added.
"You shelter traitors. You strengthen those who sell the nation. Common people have no security. You have nothing specific to say, so you slander Trinamool and the administration to remain in news," Banerjee told BJP MLAs, reminding them that they had failed to prove even a single corruption charge.
"I do not accept the ex-MP's pension of Rs 1.5 lakh. How dare they teach me ethics and honesty?" she asked, demanding answers from BJP on the Centre's non-disbursal of Bengal's funds.
"Stop depriving Bengal. We have been denied the 100-day payout for the last four years. Funds meant for us are being allocated to other states, which is a crime. You may have complaints. But 155-156 central teams have come and we have answered all their questions.

But the funds block continues. You have to pay if you have made people work," she said, adding that similar complaints were there in BJP-governed Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, too; but their 100-day payouts were never stopped.
Banerjee also responded to BJP's OBC jibes: "Bengal has 30% Muslims, among the highest in the country. This has been the demography since Partition. We were not even born then. Is it right to deny the minority food, education? Is it right to say we will not treat them as equals, as human beings?"

BSP chief Mayawati alleged that "there is something else in the heart of both parties and something else on their tongue". Mayawati said that parties should rise above their narrow thought and avoid tampering with the Constitution. BSP supremo also said that politics in the name of language going on in many states of the country is not good. "All languages should be respected," she said. On the issue of voters list controversy in Bihar, Mayawati said the Election Commission should clarify its position and the political parties should be taken into confidence before launching any new decision. Reacting on the rape of a student in Kolkata, she said that women are not completely safe anywhere in the entire country, including West Bengal. In this matter too, the central and all state governments must pay attention, she said. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said here today that, 'Those opposing reservations are also opposing socialism and secularism words in the Constitution. The BJP had opposed these principles since its inception. Today, they continue spreading hatred because they cannot attack the Constitution directly. So they oppose secularism and socialism instead.' Akhilesh Yadav further said that, "The excuse for the two words is actually the goal of the BJP and their fellow colleagues to remove the entire Constitution." EOW intensifies probe into ‘Salar Jung family's Rs 150-crore land gift to Sena MP's driver'
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar city police has intensified its probe into a complaint by a lawyer in Parbhani alleging that the driver of a Shiv Sena MP was illegally gifted a three-acre land worth nearly Rs 150 crore, a prime property in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, by Hyderabad's Salar Jung family. The complaint was filed by lawyer Mujahid Khan, who alleged fraud in the gift deed effecting transfer of the three acres from the Salar Jung family to Javed Shaikh, driver of Shiv Sena MP Sandipan Bhumre, whose son Vikas Bhumre is an MLA. Speaking to The Indian Express, the investigation officer of the case and EOW inspector Sambhaji Pawar said the EOW received the complaint around two months back and since then an inquiry has been going on into the matter, and that recently the inquiry has been expedited. As per the complaint filed with the EOW, the three-acre land in question is in the Dawoodpura area on Jalna Road in Aurangabad and is part of a 12-acre land belonging to the Salar Jung family. Shaikh has claimed he knows the Salar Jung family well. The lawyer, however, has questioned as to why would the Salar Jung family give such a high-value land to a driver. Khan also claimed that for the same land, the Salar Jung family fought a long legal battle with the revenue department and claimed it in 2023. 'We are checking the legality of the land transfer gift deed. We have already recorded some statements and have summoned other people concerned, including the kin of the Salar family,' Pawar said. 'We have summoned Shaikh in the past. He told us he would come with some documents but did not turn up again. We again served him summons recently. Similarly, kin of the Salar Jung family have also been asked to remain present for the inquiry with relevant documents,' Pawar added. The police have so far not registered any FIR in the case and are checking if a cognisable offence was committed. When asked if the police have recorded the statements of Vikas Bhumre and his father Sandipan Bhumre, the investigation officer said the inquiry is at a preliminary stage and for now they have not been found connected to the alleged irregularities; hence, they have not been summoned yet. Vikas Bhumre reportedly denied any link of his family with their driver Shaikh's land gift deed.

Congress says the BJP is delaying implementing 27% OBC reservation in Madhya Pradesh
Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being against the Backward Classes, the Congress on Saturday (June 28 2025), alleged that the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has been wilfully delaying passing on the benefits of 27% reservation in State government jobs and institutions despite a law enacted by the State Assembly. The party demanded immediate implementation of 27% reservation for the OBCs in Madhya Pradesh as it has been categorically cleared by the Supreme Court of India as well. Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, senior party leaders, including former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, AICC in-charge for Madhya Pradesh Harish Chaudhary, MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari, and the head of the Congress's OBC department Anil JaiHind, said the delay in implementing the reservation is revealing the State government's anti-reservation and anti-Backward Class mindset. Mr. Chaudhary said in 1994, the Congress government had provided 14% reservation to the OBCs and subsequently, in 2003, proposed the quota to be raised to 27%. However, since then, the BJP has been in power in the State and it never took any decision to implement the decision. When the Kamal Nath government was formed in December 2018, it brought an Ordinance to provide 27% reservation for OBCs in 2019. 'The BJP challenged it in court, which then directed that a law be enacted on the matter. We subsequently got the Bill passed in the Assembly. But the BJP formed the government again, and it did not implement the reservation,' Mr. Chaudhary said, adding that the pleas against the 27% quota were by the High Court and the Supreme Court as well. Chhattisgarh issue Mr. Baghel said that the Congress government in Chhattisgarh had unanimously passed a law in December 2022 for providing 27% reservation to the OBCs, but the Bill is still to get the nod of the Governor. 'This is because the BJP does not want to provide 27% reservation to the OBCs,' the former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister said. 'We will not only fight the issue legally, but will raise it publicly to build pressure on the BJP government to implement it,' he added. Mr. Patwari said that it was strange that Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he belonged to the OBCs but was not providing the community its rightful due. 'The OBC Chief Ministers of MP belonging to the BJP, including Uma Bharti, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Mohan Yadav, have all betrayed their own community,' he said.
