Legendary Heavy Metal Band Has Exciting News (And It Involves a 90s Rock Icon)

Few bands are as synonymous with heavy metal as Judas Priest. With at the helm, the band pioneered the sound by releasing iconic albums like British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance and Painkiller.
The band's epic journey will now be told in a new documentary: The Ballad of Judas Priest, which is currently in production at Sony Music Vision.
Fellow rock icon will help tell this story. The guitarist will co-direct the documentary with filmmaker Sam Dunn.
"We have lived and breathed metal for over five decades, and finally in this documentary we are summoning our congregation to officially witness our lives uncensored, in a never-before-seen way," Judas Priest said in a statement (per Ultimate Classic Rock). "The cassock comes off, revealing Priest in all its metal glory!"
Tom Morello and Sam Dunn issued a joint statement, saying that there is "so much more" to the Judas Priest story than their "huge hits that have shaped the heavy metal genre."
"Tracing their incredible 50-year journey, this film will capture how Judas Priest both defined the sound and look of metal, but also made it a more inclusive place along the way," the co-directors added.
"We are grateful to the band for allowing us such intimate, unfiltered access to their lives and look forward to bringing this film to the metal masses around the world."Tom Morello will also serve as the film's executive producer. Sam Dunn, who will co-produce, also made the documentaryMetal: A Headbanger's Journey and concert films for Iron Maiden, Rush, and ZZ Top.
Judas Priest formed in Birmingham, England, in the late '60s and released their debut album, Rocka Rolla, in 1975. Along with fellow Birmingham band Black Sabbath, Priest introduced this heavier, darker, harder rock sound that we now know as heavy metal.
Black Sabbath (and their frontman, Ozzy Osbourne) take their last curtain call on July 5. The event will be the final showever for both Ozzy and Sabbath.
The farewell show's lineup features some of the biggest names in metal's history, except Judas Priest. Halford explained why and how he's "gutted" to miss the show.

Legendary Rocker, 76, Nears Final Show as Wife Attends Emotional Tribute

Legendary Rocker, 76, Nears Final Show as Wife Attends Emotional Tribute originally appeared on Parade. Sharon Osbourne stepped out in a rare appearance to attend a Black Sabbath art exhibit just days ahead of husband Ozzy Osbourne's final show. Sharon looked stylish in a cream pantsuit with a black shirt as she posed beside a large poster of Ozzy displayed at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in photos shared by The Sun on June 25. The exhibit focusing on Black Sabbath launched the same day as Sharon's appearance, and it costs nothing for fans to visit. Along with the poster, it includes several pieces of original memorabilia like album art, stage outfits, Tony Iommi's guitar iterations, Ozzy's iconic crucifix, rare photos and more. The former X Factor judge's outing comes just days before Black Sabbath's final show, Back to the Beginning, which is set for July 5 in Birmingham, England. Birmingham is Ozzy's hometown and is widely considered the birthplace of heavy metal. This will be the first time in 20 years that Ozzy, Tony, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward have performed together. Despite his Parkinson's Disease and ongoing spinal issues, Ozzy said that he's 'giving 120 percent.' The concert will serve as a charity benefit and the proceeds are supporting Cure Parkinson's, Birmingham Children's Hospital and Acorns Children's Hospice. 'If my God wants me to do the show, I'll do it. I haven't done any physical work for the last seven [or so] years,' Ozzy said on his show SiriusXM's "Ozzy Speaks" on May 28. 'By hook or by crook, I'm gonna make it there. I've got this trainer guy who helps people get back to normal. It's hard going, but he's convinced that he can pull it off for me. I'm giving it everything I've got.' Sharon has been the one to orchestrate her husband's farewell concert and will include a lineup of some of the biggest metal bands in history like Metallica, Guns 'N Roses, Alice in Chains and more. Shortly after the show was announced, Sharon told the BBC that this show will be Ozzy's 'full stop.' Legendary Rocker, 76, Nears Final Show as Wife Attends Emotional Tribute first appeared on Parade on Jun 25, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 25, 2025, where it first appeared.

Watch Judas Priest pay tribute to Black Sabbath with thunderous War Pigs cover

Judas Priest have covered War Pigs in tribute to fellow Birmingham heavy metal legends Black Sabbath. Earlier today (July 1), the self-anointed Metal Gods put out their take on the opening song from Sabbath's seminal second album Paranoid, the original version of which they've played from the tape before their concerts for many years. The band comment: 'We are honoured to show our love for Ozzy [Osbourne] and Black Sabbath with our homage to War Pigs: a song we play at every show around the world that fans sing along to – reinforcing their love as well for the legendary Prince Of Darkness!' Sabbath's founding lineup – vocalist Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward – will reunite onstage for the first time in almost 20 years at their Back To The Beginning all-dayer this Saturday (July 5). Being held at Villa Park in Birmingham, the show will mark Osbourne's last time onstage, following his retirement from touring in 2023. The singer will play both with Sabbath and as a solo artist, and the bill will be rounded out by a who's-who of hard rock and heavy metal, with other performers including Metallica, Guns N' Roses and Slayer. Priest are one of the few vaunted metal bands to not be on the lineup for Saturday, but they're missing out for good reason. As frontman Rob Halford recently explained to Metal Hammer, the band are playing the 60th-anniversary celebrations for hard rockers Scorpions in Germany the same day and wouldn't be able to make both shows happen. He said he was 'gutted' over the clash but added that founding guitarist K.K. Downing, who left Priest in 2011, would represent 'the spirit of the band' at Back To The Beginning. Priest are currently touring Europe on their Shield Of Pain run, celebrating both their latest album Invincible Shield and the 35th anniversary of their 1990 classic Painkiller. The tour will be capped off by two UK shows, the second being a co-headliner with Alice Cooper at the O2 Arena in London on July 25. Priest will tour North America with Cooper from September to October. See details and get tickets via their website.
