Atlanta., March 25, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Porsche factory driver Pascal Wehrlein will make his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14-15, 2025. The reigning Formula E World Champion from Germany will complete the Porsche Penske Motorsport driver lineup. Wehrlein will share the cockpit of the #4 Porsche 963 with Felipe Nasr from Brazil and Nick Tandy from Great Britain. Portuguese António Félix da Costa, also a full-time driver in the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, will compete in the LMP2 category, piloting an Oreca prototype in the highlight event of the FIA World Endurance Championship WEC season.

Pascal Wehrlein is already familiar with the Porsche 963 from test sessions and his participation in the 24 Hours of Daytona in late January, where he bolstered the customer team JDC-Miller MotorSports. In June, the reigning Formula E World Champion and former DTM Champion will take the wheel of the hybrid prototype for Porsche Penske Motorsport in his Le Mans debut. He will share driving duties with seasoned factory teammates: Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy, who recently won the two major North American endurance classics in Daytona and Sebring as full-time drivers in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. Nasr, a three-time IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship titleholder, will be making his sixth start at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Tandy, who claimed overall victory with Porsche in 2015, brings extensive experience from twelve previous Le Mans appearances."The Porsche driver roster is absolutely top-tier and incredibly deep. It only makes sense to leverage our strong personnel from the Formula E factory team for the third Porsche Penske Motorsport entry at Le Mans," explains Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. "Pascal Wehrlein has fully convinced us with his performance in testing and his participation in the 24 Hours of Daytona. As the reigning Formula E World Champion, he has earned his Le Mans debut at the wheel of a Porsche 963. António Félix da Costa, making his seventh start in France, will undoubtedly be among the fastest LMP2 drivers once again.""Competing for Porsche Penske Motorsport at Le Mans is a dream come true for me. I`m looking forward to this major challenge because, unlike in Formula E, I have to share everything in the Porsche 963 that I would normally tailor specifically to myself: seating position, setup, strategy, and more," says Pascal Wehrlein, looking ahead to his 24 Hours of Le Mans debut. "Of course, I want to add major titles in other series to my Formula E World Championship victory, but my primary goal is to do a strong job for the team and learn as much as possible. Porsche has such an iconic motorsport heritage; I am extremely grateful for this opportunity."While Wehrlein will first need to acclimate himself to the unique demands of the Circuit des 24 Heures in June, his Formula E teammate António Félix da Costa is no stranger to the legendary endurance race. The Portuguese driver is set for his seventh Le Mans start. In 2022, he won the LMP2 class behind the wheel of an Oreca-Gibson. The following year, he took on the 24-hour challenge with a customer Porsche 963. "I am very happy to be back at Le Mans after one year absence," the 33-year-old said. "In my last LMP2 appearance, I won the class. That's my goal again this year. I can't wait to attack alongside my teammates in June."Porsche race cars at the 2025 24 Hours of Le MansHypercar Class (Porsche 963):#4 Porsche Penske Motorsport: Felipe Nasr (BRA) / Nick Tandy (GBR) / Pascal Wehrlein (DEU)#5 Porsche Penske Motorsport: Julien Andlauer (FRA) / Michael Christensen (DNK) / Mathieu Jaminet (FRA)#6 Porsche Penske Motorsport: Matt Campbell (AUS) / Kévin Estre (FRA) / Laurens Vanthoor (BEL)#99 Proton Competition: Neel Jani (SUI) / Nico Pino (CHL) / Nico Varrone (ARG)LMGT3 Class (Porsche 911 GT3 R):#85 Iron Dames: Rahel Frey (SUI) / Michelle Gatting (DNK) / Célia Martin (FRA)#90 Manthey: Antares Au (HKG) / Loek Hartog (NED) / Klaus Bachler (AUT)#91 Manthey 1st Phorm: Ryan Hardwick (USA) / Richard Lietz (AUT) / Riccardo Pera (ITA)Porsche in Formula EIn the 2024/2025 season, Porsche is contesting its sixth Formula E campaign. This 1965 Porsche 356 C 1600 SC Coupe sold for $145,600 through RM Sotheby's in 2023. The most advanced and well-built versions of the model are the 356 C and SC (shown here), made in 1964 and 1965. According to the auction house, this example is dressed in its factory-correct Kunstleder Schwartz (Black Leatherette) trim. A close-up of the gearshift for the car's four-speed manual transmission, which was the only shifting option throughout the entire 356 dynasty. The two-door vehicle features a 2+2 seating configuration. This car's 1.6-liter flat-four engine originally made 95 hp, though its original twin Solex carburetors were subsequently replaced with a twin Weber setup. This 1965 example of Porsche's 356 had its body built by Reutter. While a car with its engine hung over the rear wheels was a novelty at the time, the concept is very familiar to today's drivers, who will find a 356 manageable if the laws of physics are generally observed. Porsche's 356 is a wonderful classic to own and drive, and is especially coveted by enthusiasts with an appreciation for purity of concept and refined design.

Why the Iconic Porsche 356 Is a Bucket-List Classic for Any Collection

When the automotive alphabet rolls around to 'P,' that usually means Porsche. That also means a near-infinite array of models for a marque with more than 75 years of history. Most every Porsche made is worth owning, and each, in some way, carries the DNA of the company's vehicular patriarch, the very first 356, quaintly called the 'bathtub' and looking like an inverted version of the same. Numerous iterations of the 356 were made, from the earliest 356 'Pre-A' in 1948 to the last 356 C in 1965. Today, the least of the 356s can cost well over $80,000 in good condition, and rare Carrera four-cam examples can soar well into million-dollar territory. For series-production models, cabriolets generally command double the price of coupes. More from Robb Report The 2025 C8 Corvette ZR1 May Turn Out to Be a Very Rare Collector's Car Porsche Just Unveiled 3 New All-Wheel Drive 911s The First Bugatti Bolide Could Fetch $6 Million at Auction When introduced, Porsche's giant killer was small, light, and nimble compared to most of its contemporaries, but also less powerful than all but a few. The engine was essentially a hopped-up Volkswagen power plant, and most 356 A examples, made from 1955 through 1959, were fit with a 1.6-liter flat-four, and could barely crank out 60 hp. The 356 Speedster, made from 1954 through 1958, was U.S. importer Max Hoffman's invention, and examples today are well beyond $150,000. The 356 B, made from 1959 through 1962, added twin grilles to the rear decklid and other modifications, including a less-attractive Karmann 'notchback' coupe design, somewhat controversial then and now. The most advanced and well-built versions (though all 356s were well built, if highly prone to rust) are the 356 C and SC, made in 1964 and 1965, trading places in the Porsche lineup with the then-new, flat-six-powered 911 during the 356's last year of production. The 912, introduced in 1965, was a 911 minus two cylinders, making it the true (and final) successor to the 356, though it wasn't a replacement per se, but rather, an entirely new car. Porsche's 356 is a wonderful classic to own and drive, and while power brokers won't be satiated, those with an appreciation for purity of concept and refined design will love it. Many enthusiasts gravitate toward the elemental 356 A, which is desirous in the same way a thin, non-automatic watch movement can be more satisfying than that found in a complicated chronograph. The 356 C and SC, fitted with four-wheel disc brakes, are especially appealing. The 356 SC delivers 95 hp through twin Solex carburetors, making its engine the most powerful pushrod Porsche mill ever made. A four-speed manual transmission was the only shifting option throughout the entire 356 dynasty. While a car with its engine hung over the rear wheels was a novelty at the time, the concept is very familiar to today's drivers, who will find a 356 manageable if the laws of physics are generally observed. The good news is that, with relatively modest power, no one is likely to get into much trouble. Trouble will come from a rusty or ill-repaired example. A project car is best left to professionals, and so a finished, restored vehicle is the smart choice. Original drivetrains and parts command a big premium in collector circles, where a concours-quality cabriolet can easily crest $250,000, and a Speedster double that. A basic 356 C coupe in good condition is about $85,000, with SC models nearing the $150,000 neighborhood, but values are greatly affected by condition, options, and even original color. Replacement and reproduction parts are plentiful, and these cars' simple mechanical underpinnings allow many enthusiasts to do their own wrenching. The 356 is also a great blank canvas for restomod interpretation, with 'outlaw' versions powered by everything from bored-out, flat-four monsters to a 911's engine. The good news for those thinking about a Porsche 356 is that there is no single right answer to the question, 'Which one should I buy?'Best of Robb Report The 2024 Chevy C8 Corvette: Everything We Know About the Powerful Mid-Engine Beast The World's Best Superyacht Shipyards The ABCs of Chartering a Yacht Click here to read the full article.

Team Penske names new leadership atop IndyCar, sportscar teams after Indy 500 cheating scandal

LEXINGTON, Ohio — Team Penske has promoted a pair of veteran team members to roles atop both its IndyCar and sportscar programs in the wake of the Roger Penske firing the three most senior members atop his IndyCar program in the wake of Team Penske's second high-profile team-wide tech inspection violation in 13 months. Jonathan Diuguid, who most recently served as the managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport and who joined Team Penske in 2005, has been named the president of Penske Racing Inc., overseeing Team Penske's programs in IndyCar, IMSA and WEC. Travis Law, who joined Team Penske in 2007 and most recently served as the competition director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, has been named the competition director of Penske Racing Inc. similarly overseeing Penske's IndyCar and sportscar programs moving forward. "The opportunity to lead the Team Penske efforts across the IndyCar series, IMSA and WEC is a tremendous responsibility, and the feeling of being trusted to lead these teams is a great honor," Diuguid said. "After two decades of working for Roger Penske, I truly know and understand what the Penske name means to the world of motorsports. "The best way I know to show my appreciation to him for his trust is to ensure our success continues well into the future." As the managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, Diuguid spearheaded a program that snagged consecutive wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona (2024-25), a victory in the 2025 12 Hours of Sebring, a 2024 IMSA GTP class championship and the 2024 WEC Hypercar driver's title. Diuguid first worked on Penske's Porsche RS Spyder program, followed by seven seasons as a race engineer in IndyCar before shifting into his most recent role atop the team's sportscar programs. Last year, he also served as a stand-in Indianapolis 500 strategist for race-winner Josef Newgarden, in place of Tim Cindric, the ex-Team Penske president and Newgarden strategist who was serving a suspension after the team's push-to-pass illegalities. 'We let people down': Roger Penske on Indianapolis 500, IndyCar rules violations Law joined Team Penske in 2007 as an IndyCar tire specialist before becoming a championship-winning chief mechanic and then achieving similar success in Penske's sportscar program. "Success is what is expected at Team Penske," Law said. "Roger Penske is someone that leads by example. When we get to the racetrack, we know we have the support of someone who has achieved at the highest levels. I am ready to get to work." Concurrently with its leadership announcements, Team Penske also announced the team leaders on all three IndyCar entries for the remainder of the year Friday afternoon, with Luke Mason (Newgarden's No. 2 car) and David Faustino (Will Power's No. 12 car) serving as both the race strategist and race engineers on their respective cars. For Scott McLaughlin's No. 3 car, Ben Bretzman has been named the entry's race strategist for the remainder of the year, and Malcolm Finch will serve as the car's race engineer. More: IndyCar president Doug Boles on Team Penske's violations during Indy 500 qualifying Less than a week before the 109th Indy 500, Penske fired Cindric, his longtime righthand man who for years had served as the president of the entire Team Penske empire and who at the start of this year had scaled back, solely holding onto the role of president of the Penske IndyCar team, as well as longtime Team Penske IndyCar managing director Ron Ruzewski and longtime Team Penske IndyCar general manager Kyle Moyer. Minutes before the start of Fast 12 qualifying for the Indy 500, the cars of Newgarden and Power were found by IndyCar's tech inspection team to have illegally modified attenuators that upon further review had gone undetected for well over a year. Initially, both cars were thrown out of qualifying and slated to start 11th and 12th for the race, but the following day, IndyCar president Doug Boles decided to move both cars to the back of the grid to start 32nd and 33rd, along with the suspension of Cindric and Ruzewski a handful of other monetary and points penalties. Two days later, Team Penske announced the leaders atop all three of its cars had been let go.
