Watch: Gangaikonda Cholapuram: PM Modi to visit Rajendra Chola's lost capital

On July 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu's Ariyalur district. This town, a few kilometres away from the Kollidam River, is steeped in history. A thousand years ago, it was the capital of a global empire— one that sent its navies across the Indian Ocean and built monuments to last the ages. Gangaikonda Cholapuram was established by King Rajendra Chola I (1012–1044 CE), the son of the legendary Rajaraja Chola, to mark a triumphant military expedition to the Gangetic plains. The campaign lasted less than two years. To mark this victory, Rajendra shifted the capital from Thanjavur to the newly established city: Gangaikonda Cholapuram, which means, 'the city of the Chola who conquered the Ganga.' The city boasted grand markets and a sprawling palace said to cover 60 acres. Today, other than the temple, little of that remains. Remnants of the palace were found at Maligaimedu (the mound of the palace), just two kilometres behind the famous Brihadeeswarar Temple. The temple is a replica of the Thanjavur Big Temple. The outer wall was demolished by the British to build the Lower Kollidam Anaicut. Much of the temple's granite sculptures were dismantled, and the wall was almost entirely destroyed to obtain construction materials. When locals resisted the demolition, a promise was made to replace it with a brick wall. Despite the destruction, the temple remains a masterclass in Chola architecture. Its sculptures are both intricate and unique. Around the temple are ruins of smaller shrines, broken down to build the dam. A few kilometres behind the temple lies the Chola Gangam lake, dug by Rajendra Chola. Once, it stretched 25 km and brought water from the Kollidam to the palace and city. Now, it is dry, cracked, and a shadow of its past. The canals that fed it are long gone. It relies solely on rainwater and is dry for most of the year. Four days after The Hindu's report on the derelict state of the lake, the Tamil Nadu government, earlier this week, has promised to restore this 1000-year-old lake at a cost of ₹12 crore. PM Modi's visit during the Aadi Thiruvadhirai festival, which marks the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola, once again throws a spotlight on this once-mighty seat of power. Locals hope the visit will draw the nation's attention to this historical town. The Chola emperor's capital city may be in ruins — but its story still stands, carved in stone, waiting to be told. Sad to support a govt that has failed to control crime: Chirag

1 2 Patna: Union minister and LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan on Saturday launched a blistering attack on the Nitish Kumar-led NDA govt in Bihar, expressing anguish over the deteriorating law and order situation and questioning the administration's ability to control crime. "I feel sad that I am supporting such a govt where crime has gone unbridled. If action is not taken soon, the people of Bihar may have to face serious consequences," Chirag told reporters in Patna. W arning of worse to come, he said, "There has been a series of incidents of murder, rape and robbery. This is a very worrying situation. If the situation remains like this, a more horrific scenario may arise in the coming days." "Some people say the crime incidents are taking place out of a political conspiracy in an election year to defame the state govt, but ultimately it is the responsibility of the govt and the administration to control it," the LJP (RV) leader said. While acknowledging CM Nitish Kumar 's past achievements, Chirag made it clear that silence in the face of ongoing crimes was not an option. "There is no doubt that CM Nitish Kumar brought Bihar back on track from jungle raj and improved law and order. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Libas Purple Days Sale Libas Undo But being a part of the NDA and supporting the govt does not mean I keep my eyes shut to the incidents of crime," he said. Chirag's sharp criticism came in the wake of the horrific rape of a woman home guard aspirant inside an ambulance in Gaya, an incident that has drawn widespread outrage and further fuelled concerns over policing. "Such incidents prove that the administration has completely failed," he said. "It seems the police and administration have bowed down to the criminals. Either the police have failed to stop crime or there is an attempt to cover everything up," he said. Reacting to Chirag's remarks, JD(U) chief spokesperson and MLC Neeraj Kumar said, "PM Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah have faith in CM Nitish Kumar. The people of Bihar have the same faith even today. The mind can be disturbed; there is no cure for it. But there is no doubt about the rule of law in Bihar. The public is at peace," Neeraj said. Chirag's repeated attacks on the administration despite being a key NDA ally have raised eyebrows in political circles, especially with the state gearing up for the assembly elections.
