A longtime WNBA official made a telling admission to USA TODAY journalist Christine Brennan.
Brennan, a longtime sports reporter and columnist, took a lot of heat last year for her Caitlin Clark coverage. She asked WNBA guard DiJonai Carrington following an Indiana Fever vs. Connecticut Sun game if she intentionally poked Clark in the eye. The WNBA Players' Association was not happy.

The WNBAPA called for Brennan, a respected journalist, to lose her media credential.
WNBA Players' Association executive director Terri Jackson was furious. Jackson called Brennan's question "a blatant attempt to bait a professional athlete into participating in a narrative that is false and designed to fuel racist, homophobic and misogynistic vitriol on social media."
She called for USA TODAY to punish Brennan.
"USA Today Sports should explain why a reporter with clear bias and ulterior motives was assigned to cover the league," Jackson added.
Brennan, who is releasing a book, "On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women's Sports," spoke to a longtime WNBA official who admitted that most women's basketball players just don't get it when it comes to media coverage.

WNBA players are now facing the kind of media coverage that NFL, MLB, NBA, etc. players have faced for decades.
"Unfortunately, most of our players have zero idea what real media exposure is," the league official told Brennan.
"They don't know what real coverage is, they have been shielded at college, and then they come to the WNBA not knowing what real questions are. Frankly, our players just don't get it."

That is something the league should welcome, though, as it's a clear sign of growth.

But will they?

DeWanna Bonner to reportedly sign with Mercury after being waived by Fever

Weeks after a messy breakup with the Indiana Fever, WNBA veteran DeWanna Bonner has found her new landing spot. Bonner is reportedly expected to sign with the Phoenix Mercury, a team where she spent the first decade of her career, per ESPN. Bonner's return to Phoenix will mark a sweet homecoming: The 37-year-old was drafted by the Mercury in 2009, spending 10 seasons with the team and winning two WNBA championships (2009 and 2014). Three of Bonner's six All-Star nods came while she was in Phoenix. The other three came with the Connecticut Sun, where Bonner played for the past five seasons before signing with Indiana this offseason. Bonner was one of the Fever's flashiest offseason signings, agreeing to a one-year, $200,000 deal with Indiana with the hopes of giving the team a veteran boost. She became the WNBA's third-time leading scorer at the beginning of the season, during the Fever's sold-out season opener. Advertisement But things quickly went sour, as Bonner went from an early-season starter to being benched in favor of guard Lexie Hull. As a result, the forward reportedly wanted out of Indiana, and missed multiple weeks in June due to "personal reasons." Bonner was released by the Fever on June 25 after the team failed to find a trade partner. The veteran has only played in nine games this season, averaging 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists. She hasn't played since June 10. Now, Bonner will reportedly join a thriving Mercury team, which is currently tied for second in the league with a 12-6 record, winning seven of their last ten games. Bonner will join her fiancée and former Sun teammate Alyssa Thomas in Phoenix, and will also take the court alongside stars like Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper.

LSU top NFL Draft prospect Garrett Nussmeier reveals key to denying transfer portal

The 2026 NFL Draft, at first glance, offers several enticing quarterback prospects, spanning different archetypes, journeys, and physical traits. No quarterback in this class has the athleticism of South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers. Texas' prodigal son, Arch Manning, has taken casual college football fans by storm. Clemson's Cade Klubnik, Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, and Penn State's Drew Allar should all make plays for Round 1, too. Among the Heisman hopefuls and potential first-round picks is LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who had the opportunity to search for greener pastures after a 9-4 season kept the Tigers out of the College Football Playoff. Instead, he stayed home in Baton Rouge, opting to conclude his collegiate career where it started. Advertisement Nussmeier's loyalty stands out in NIL era There's nothing wrong with a prospect pivoting to a bigger school for a better shot at the NFL or a player maximizing their earnings in a sport known to end careers in a flash. But there's something satisfying about continuity and finishing what one started. Nussmeier has a chance to do that with the Tigers. Part of the reason why Nussmeier may have been convinced to stay was the talent waiting for him at LSU. Draftable talents at receiver like Nic Anderson and Aaron Anderson complement a strong defense, opening the door for a playoff run this winter. Nussmeier recently spoke with Yahoo Sports about keeping his focus on the Tigers, despite the temptations waiting for him in the college football offseason. Advertisement 'For me, I'm just focused on our team,' Nussmeier said. 'I'm focused on our team goals and I'm focused on being the best that I can be for my teammates. Obviously, you can't completely ignore all the outside noise. You're lying if you say that you don't hear it. So I definitely hear it. 'As I spoke about, our team with the expectations coming from within, I obviously have expectations for myself, as well. The way that I kind of straddle those and keep those in check is focusing on our team. My main goal is to help lead the LSU Tigers to a national championship and let the rest fall into place.' MORE: Arch Manning not a top-two CFB QB, insiders say Nussmeier will enter the year as one of the top quarterbacks in this class and a fairly comfortable first-round pick. With an entire season until the NFL Draft, he'll have to play well to maintain his stock. Still, there's reason to believe in his upside. Advertisement The son of former NFL quarterback Doug Nussmeier, LSU's senior passer has a good grasp of the offense and uses it to his advantage. He's a big-game hunter with a strong enough arm to capitalize on his aggression, even with an undersized (6'1", 200 pounds) frame. LSU knows what it has at the sport's most important position, throwing (and completing) more passes than any team in the SEC a season ago. His 12 interceptions also led the conference, although the rest of his production profile, including 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns, helps offset those concerns. Continuity at quarterback is important, and with a top prospect under center, the Tigers are poised to find success in 2025. With a strong season, Nussmeier could follow Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels' footsteps and help establish LSU as a quarterback factory. MORE NCAA NEWS

🎥 The top 5️⃣ goals from the MLS weekend

Major League Soccer produced yet another batch of highlight-reel worthy goals after an action-packed weekend. Let's take a look at some of the best from Matchday 22. 5. Ian Smith vs New England Every Portland Timbers fan will have loved what they saw at Providence Park with this one. A beautiful team move eventually saw the ball fall right into open space before Ian Smith beautifully sliced home the opener. 4. Erik Thommy vs Colorado Rapids (Goalkeeper assist!) We're adding Sporting Kansas City to this list thanks to an outrageous goalkeeper assist. Erik Thommy was the matchwinner against Colorado after John Pulskamp found him. Some slick thinking and footwork here from the pair! 3. Noel Caliskan vs St. Louis City Playing at right-back on the night, you might not have had Noel Caliskan as the man to pull out a cracking opener for Real Salt Lake, but boy, did he ever. The 24-year-old stood poised outside the box before bending the ball into the far opposite corner. 2. Hannes Wolf vs Toronto FC This one was just pure X-Games mode. A wild cross from Mitja Ilenič found Hannes Wolf at the back post, and he blasted the ball off the woodwork and in for the opener. 1. Lionel Messi vs CF Montreal It had to be, didn't it? It's just like old times for the little boy from Rosario as Lionel Messi cut through multiple CF Montreal players with ease. It's like butter. Advertisement Which one was your favourite?
