French court orders release of Lebanese militant Georges Ibrahim Abdallah

CTV News17-07-2025
PARIS — A French court on Thursday ordered the conditional release of a Lebanese pro-Palestinian communist militant after more than 40 years in detention in France.
Georges Ibrahim Abdallah was serving a life sentence for complicity in the murders of two diplomats, one American and one Israeli, in Paris in 1982.
The Paris Court of Appeal ruled Abdallah, who has been imprisoned in France since his arrest in 1984, can be released next Friday on the condition that he leave France and never return, judicial authorities said.
His lawyer, Jean-Louis Chalanset, told reporters that Abdallah wants to return to Lebanon upon his release and remains 'a communist militant who supports the Palestinian struggle and fights against the invasion of his country by Israel.'
He described Abdallah as the longest-held political prisoner in Europe.
'He has never renounced his convictions,' Chalanset said, adding that U.S. authorities had lobbied the Paris court to reject the 74-year-old's release request. 'So it's also a political victory, even after nearly 41 years in detention, against the United States.'

Statement by Prime Minister Carney on Canada-U.S. trade Français

OTTAWA, ON, Aug. 1, 2025 /CNW/ - "President Trump has announced that the United States will increase its tariffs to 35% on those Canadian exports that are not covered under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, or CUSMA. While the Canadian government is disappointed by this action, we remain committed to CUSMA, which is the world's second-largest free trade agreement by trading volume. The U.S. application of CUSMA means that the U.S. average tariff rate on Canadian goods remains one of its lowest for all of its trading partners. Other sectors of our economy – including lumber, steel, aluminum, and automobiles – are, however, heavily impacted by U.S. duties and tariffs. For such sectors, the Canadian government will act to protect Canadian jobs, invest in our industrial competitiveness, buy Canadian, and diversify our export markets. The United States has justified its most recent trade action on the basis of the cross-border flow of fentanyl, despite the fact that Canada accounts for only 1% of U.S. fentanyl imports and has been working intensively to further reduce these volumes. Canada's government is making historic investments in border security to arrest drug traffickers, take down transnational gangs, and end migrant smuggling. These include thousands of new law enforcement and border security officers, aerial surveillance, intelligence and security operations, and the strongest border legislation in our history. We will continue working with the United States to stop the scourge of fentanyl and save lives in both our countries. While we will continue to negotiate with the United States on our trading relationship, the Canadian government is laser focused on what we can control: building Canada strong. The federal government, provinces, and territories are working together to cut down trade barriers to build one Canadian economy. We are developing a series of major nation-building projects with provincial, territorial, and Indigenous partners. Together, these initiatives have the potential to catalyse over half a trillion dollars of new investments in Canada. Canadians will be our own best customer, creating more well-paying careers at home, as we strengthen and diversify our trading partnerships throughout the world. We can give ourselves more than any foreign government can ever take away by building with Canadian workers and by using Canadian resources to benefit all Canadians."

Journal de Montréal, TVA offices targeted by vandals

The offices of the Journal de Montréal and the TVA television were targeted by vandals Thursday night in an attack that appears related to the Québecor media empire's coverage of Muslims and 'all vulnerable and marginalized communities.' The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m., police said, when vandals used a hammer to break through the main door of the offices on Frontenac St. near Mont-Royal Ave. The vandals threw paint and smashed windows as stunned employees watched. The suspects fled before the arrival of police. In its report on the attack, Journal de Montréal editor Stéphane Alarie that no injuries were reported. An anonymous email sent to the Montreal Gazette early Friday said Thursday night's attack targeted Journal de Montréal owner Pierre Karl Péladeau 'and his Québecor empire.' 'We can not ignore the systemic role that the Québecor empire takes in the flagrant rise of Islamophobia in recent years; an integral element to the desensitization and general normalization of the Palestinian genocide in the public discourse,' the email reads. 'Through a diversity of media entities, editing houses, advertising companies, and cultural productions, Québecor propagates infinite hatred toward all vulnerable and marginalized communities. Queer and trans folks, drug users, immigrants, houseless people, just to name a few examples, all suffer dehumanization by the hands of PKP's cronies.' Montreal police said they will examine surveillance tapes in an effort to track down the suspects.

Avi Benlolo: Carney's message to Hamas — terrorism pays

Article content And what of Israel — the only democracy in the Middle East, a nation that faces existential threats on multiple fronts, including from Iran and its terror proxies in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen? Instead of support, Israel receives lectures. Instead of security assistance, it gets condemnation. Article content While Israel intercepts rockets from Yemen and navigates daily threats to its very survival, Canada is choosing this moment — this volatile, dangerous moment — to side with the forces that seek Israel's destruction. Article content If we are to have a winning mindset as a nation, we need to show strength and independence. This isn't leadership. Canada is merely following the crowd again like a 'me too' country, afraid to stick to its longstanding position of a negotiated solution. Article content The irony is that Carney's announcement comes while countries like France and the U.K. engage in similar posturing — none of them willing or able to answer basic questions, such as: Where are the borders? Who will lead this Palestinian state? Will it be democratic? Will it end terrorism? Will it recognize Israel's right to exist? Article content These questions remain unanswered because the reality is as inconvenient as it is undeniable: after October 7, a Palestinian State is less viable. Article content Canada's announcement is also detriment of all Canadians at a time when we are trying to negotiate a trade deal with the United States. On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump posted to Truth Social: 'Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh' Canada!!!' Article content Why are we provoking America by announcing a declaration of a Palestinian state? How does this help Canadian workers and taxpayers? Article content If Canada were serious about peace, it would be investing in Israeli security and demanding transparency from the Palestinian Authority. It would be calling out the glorification of terrorism, not enabling it. It would be standing firm on the principle that peace cannot be achieved through bloodshed and coercion. Article content Instead, Carney has chosen appeasement over peace. He has adopted a position of political theatrics rather than moral clarity. I am terribly disappointed. History will remember who stood on the right side in the aftermath of October 7 — and who chose to reward those who lit the match. Article content Article content Article content
