Trade Arabia21-04-2025
Oman Airports has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Iraq's Teebat Karbala Company to support setting up and initial operations of Karbala International Airport, a key project in Iraq's air transport sector, reported Muscat Daily.
The agreement was formalised on Saturday by Saeed Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and Chairman of Board of Directors of Oman Airports, and Hassan al Abayji, Chairman of Teebat Karbala Company.
The partnership is part of broader civil aviation cooperation between Oman and Iraq. It aims to develop airport infrastructure and improve operational capacity in line with international aviation standards.
As part of the agreement, a team of Omani technical, administrative and operations personnel will be stationed in Karbala for 15 months. Their responsibilities will include preparing the airport for its initial phase of operations and training local staff. The deployment is expected to ensure the airport meets international benchmarks in terms of safety, service and efficiency.
Abayji described Karbala International Airport as one of the most vital aviation projects in Iraq. 'This agreement reflects a significant step in strengthening cooperation between Iraq and Oman.'
The airport is strategically located between the cities of Karbala and Najaf. It is designed to handle 2mn passengers annually in its first phase, with capacity expected to grow to 6mn in the second phase and eventually reach 20mn.
Oman Airports, which manages six airports in the sultanate, is known for its expertise in airport operations. The company's involvement is expected to bring proven technical and administrative know-how to the Iraqi project.

PowerChina Wins $4BN Contract For Iraq's First Major Seawater Desalination Facility

PowerChina has secured a $4 billion contract to build Iraq's first large-scale seawater desalination plant in Basra, in partnership with local firm Al Ridha Group, Iraqi officials announced. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani attended the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday for the Basra Seawater Desalination Plant, a Chinese-built facility with a planned capacity of one million cubic meters per day. According to the premier's office, the project is scheduled to enter commercial service in June 2028 and will include a 300-megawatt (MW) power plant to support operations. The deal forms part of Baghdad's response to worsening water scarcity in the south. During construction, smaller desalination units will be deployed across Basra Governorate. These include the Shatt al-Arab station with a 5,000 cubic meter per hour capacity – equivalent to two Olympic pools per hour. The Al-Faw, Al-Siba, and Abu Flous plants will each produce 3,000 cubic meters per hour, while the Safwan plant will produce 1,000. Beyond Iraq, China has expanded its infrastructure reach across West Asia through a series of state-backed investments in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkiye. In April 2025, Sinopec and Aramco Asia Singapore signed a $4 billion agreement to establish Fujian Sinopec Aramco Refining & Petrochemical Co., a joint venture to manage crude logistics at the Gulei Port zone in Zhangzhou. The move supports Aramco's plans to supply up to one million barrels per day for downstream projects in China. Between 2021 and October 2024, China became the largest source of greenfield FDI in Saudi Arabia, investing $21.6 billion—one-third of it in clean energy. In Iran, total Chinese investment since 2007 remains under $5 billion. Projects include the Yadavaran oil field, Tehran–Mashhad railway, Qazvin tramway, a €1 billion ($1.09 billion) solar project, and a $350 million steel plant. Plans involving South Pars were scaled back under US pressure. 'Apart from the role played by state-backed investment, China's factory prowess has grown thanks to a number of factors ranging from Covid-era disruptions of supply chains to Beijing's planning and technological breakthroughs.' — Shehzad Qazi (@shehzadhqazi) July 25, 2025 In Turkey, China Sunergy, Talesun, Yingli, and NARI have established solar production facilities. China Sunergy alone has invested around $600 million in Istanbul for photovoltaic (PV) exports to Europe.

Oman Opens Visa, Medical Centre In Manila To Streamline Labour Recruitment

The Sultanate of Oman has inaugurated a visa and medical examination centre in Manila, as part of ongoing efforts to streamline and regulate work visa procedures as well as to ensure greater protection for both workers and employers, according to a statement from Oman's Foreign Ministry. The centre, which was opened under the patronage of Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi, Foreign Minister, and Dr Mahad bin Said bin Ali Baowain, Minister of Labour, will facilitate and regulate the issuance of work visas based on employment contracts officially approved under Omani labour law. It is designed to serve as a comprehensive, one-stop facility for Filipino workers seeking employment in Oman, offering biometric registration, medical screening, employment contract attestation, and other pre-departure services. In addition to processing applications, the centre houses a dedicated information desk and conducts orientation sessions to educate prospective workers on their rights and responsibilities. These measures are intended to support a smoother transition for workers and ensure that both employees and employers are fully informed before placement. The Manila centre is the first of several similar facilities Oman plans to open in key labour-exporting nations. Authorities said the expansion is part of a long-term strategy to ensure lawful and ethical hiring practices while aligning with international labour standards. The initiative underscores Oman's broader vision of providing secure, high-quality public services and enhancing the credibility and sustainability of its labour market.

Oman Airports In Talks With Wizz Air For Direct Europe-To-Muscat Flights

Oman Airports is in advanced talks with European low-cost airline Wizz Air to operate direct flights between European cities and the Sultanate, following the carrier's decision to end its Abu Dhabi operations by September, according to the Oman News Agency (ONA). Engineer Ahmed Said Al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports, confirmed the negotiations, stating that discussions include potential routes linking Muscat to European hubs, including Budapest. 'We are seriously exploring the possibility of launching direct flights from various European airports to Oman — whether via Budapest or other cities,' Al Amri was quoted as saying by ONA. The talks come at a strategic moment, with Wizz Air set to wind down its presence in the Gulf and re-focus on core European markets. The potential Muscat expansion reflects both the airline's shift in focus and Oman's growing appeal as a regional aviation and tourism hub. Al Amri noted that attracting global carriers is part of Oman Airports' broader strategy to diversify revenue streams, improve operational efficiency, and support national objectives in aviation, logistics, and tourism. If finalised, the new routes would strengthen Oman's connectivity to Europe and potentially increase tourist traffic, reinforcing the Sultanate's position as a gateway to the Gulf and beyond.
