Oman Airports has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Iraq's Teebat Karbala Company to support setting up and initial operations of Karbala International Airport, a key project in Iraq's air transport sector, reported Muscat Daily.
The agreement was formalised on Saturday by Saeed Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and Chairman of Board of Directors of Oman Airports, and Hassan al Abayji, Chairman of Teebat Karbala Company.
The partnership is part of broader civil aviation cooperation between Oman and Iraq. It aims to develop airport infrastructure and improve operational capacity in line with international aviation standards.
As part of the agreement, a team of Omani technical, administrative and operations personnel will be stationed in Karbala for 15 months. Their responsibilities will include preparing the airport for its initial phase of operations and training local staff. The deployment is expected to ensure the airport meets international benchmarks in terms of safety, service and efficiency.
Abayji described Karbala International Airport as one of the most vital aviation projects in Iraq. 'This agreement reflects a significant step in strengthening cooperation between Iraq and Oman.'
The airport is strategically located between the cities of Karbala and Najaf. It is designed to handle 2mn passengers annually in its first phase, with capacity expected to grow to 6mn in the second phase and eventually reach 20mn.
Oman Airports, which manages six airports in the sultanate, is known for its expertise in airport operations. The company's involvement is expected to bring proven technical and administrative know-how to the Iraqi project.

Oman Airports In Talks With Wizz Air For Direct Europe-To-Muscat Flights

Oman Airports is in advanced talks with European low-cost airline Wizz Air to operate direct flights between European cities and the Sultanate, following the carrier's decision to end its Abu Dhabi operations by September, according to the Oman News Agency (ONA). Engineer Ahmed Said Al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports, confirmed the negotiations, stating that discussions include potential routes linking Muscat to European hubs, including Budapest. 'We are seriously exploring the possibility of launching direct flights from various European airports to Oman — whether via Budapest or other cities,' Al Amri was quoted as saying by ONA. The talks come at a strategic moment, with Wizz Air set to wind down its presence in the Gulf and re-focus on core European markets. The potential Muscat expansion reflects both the airline's shift in focus and Oman's growing appeal as a regional aviation and tourism hub. Al Amri noted that attracting global carriers is part of Oman Airports' broader strategy to diversify revenue streams, improve operational efficiency, and support national objectives in aviation, logistics, and tourism. If finalised, the new routes would strengthen Oman's connectivity to Europe and potentially increase tourist traffic, reinforcing the Sultanate's position as a gateway to the Gulf and beyond.

Explosion Halts Oil Operations in Iraq's Kurdistan Region

An early morning explosion on Tuesday at an oil production site in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region forced operations to a halt, according to the U.S.-based company HKN Energy, which runs the field. The blast occurred around 7:00 AM local time at one of the company's facilities in the Sarang oil field. While the cause of the explosion remains unknown, the company confirmed that no injuries were reported. 'As a precaution, operations at the affected facility have been suspended until the site is secured,' HKN Energy said in a statement. This incident comes amid a wave of recent drone and rocket attacks targeting Kurdistan. Just a day earlier, three explosive-laden drones were launched in the region. One was intercepted near Arbil airport, while two others struck the Khurmala oil field, causing damage but no casualties. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, Kurdistan authorities previously accused the Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition of Iran-aligned paramilitary groups now part of Iraq's security forces, of being behind an attempted drone strike on July 3 near Arbil. The federal government in Baghdad denied the claim. Tensions have been building between Baghdad and the Kurdish regional government, especially over oil exports. A major oil pipeline to Turkey has remained closed since 2023 due to legal and technical disputes. In May, the Iraqi federal government even filed a complaint against Kurdistan for independently signing gas contracts with two U.S. companies, one of them being HKN Energy. For now, officials and industry watchers are waiting for further investigation into the explosion as security concerns in the oil-rich region continue to grow.

Oman: Four-Year-Old Kerala Girl Dies In Haima Car Crash: Two Dead, Three Injured In Oman Road Accident

A tragic road accident in Haima, central Oman, claimed the lives of two people, including a four-year-old Indian girl, and left three others injured, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) confirmed on Tuesday. The young victim has been identified as Jesa Harin, daughter of Navas and Rasiya, originally from Keecheri near Mattannur in Kerala's Kannur district. The family had been residing in Nizwa, northern Oman. The accident occurred around 1:30am while the family was returning to Nizwa from a trip to Salalah. According to reports, the vehicle was struck by a sudden tornado, causing the driver to lose control. The force of the crash reportedly threw Jesa from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency response teams rushed to the site and provided first aid to the injured before transferring them to Haima Hospital. Medical authorities said one person remains in critical condition, while two others sustained moderate injuries. The vehicle was carrying five individuals at the time of the accident. Salalah, in southern Oman, is a popular summer destination known for its cool climate, light drizzles, and lush greenery—offering respite from the intense heat in other parts of the region. Every year, it draws thousands of tourists, especially during the Khareef (monsoon) season. Omani authorities have been working to ensure road safety on the 1,000-kilometre route between Muscat and Salalah. The ROP has deployed patrol units along the stretch and installed cautionary signs, including warnings about possible fuel shortages. Despite these efforts, road accidents continue to be a major concern in the country. The ROP cites speeding, driver fatigue, mobile phone use, and negligence as leading causes of fatalities and serious injuries. In light of this latest tragedy, the Royal Oman Police has once again urged all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic rules, maintain safe speeds, avoid risky overtaking, and remain alert while driving—especially on long-distance routes.
