Muscat: Oman Air has announced the appointment of Eng. Hamood Al Alawi as Deputy Chief Executive Officer. This strategic appointment marks a significant step in the airline's transformation journey and underscores its commitment to building a strong pipeline of Omani leaders in the aviation sector. Hamood bin Musbah Al Alawi joins Oman Air from Oman Airports Management Company, where he served as Acting Chief Executive Officer and played a pivotal role in launching the airport's own transformation programme. His Excellency Saeed bin Hamoud Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and Chairman of Oman Air, said 'The appointment of Hamood Al Alawi is a proud moment for the airline and the country's aviation sector. Holding a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Leeds, UK, Hamood Al Alawi brings over two decades of diverse leadership experience across the government and private sectors, with a strong track record in asset management, corporate transformation and commercial performance. He has held senior roles with Shell International in the Netherlands, led flagship-cost efficiency initiatives for Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), and served as a member of the Executive leadership team at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, where he headed a unit responsible for an OMR 1 billion strategic project. In 2024, Hamood Al Alawi was appointed to lead the transformation of Oman Airports Management Company, where, during a brief but impactful tenure, the company delivered record financial performance, including the highest EBITDA since its establishment, as well as a comprehensive restructuring programme to enhance efficiency and capacity. As Deputy CEO of Oman Air, he will play a key role in driving the day-to-day activities of the transformation, working directly with the CEO and senior leadership to facilitate change and enable the delivery of performance targets which ensure the airline's long-term commercial viability, financial sustainability, and operational excellence.

Oman Airports to help launch, operate Karbala Airport in Iraq

Oman Airports has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Iraq's Teebat Karbala Company to support setting up and initial operations of Karbala International Airport, a key project in Iraq's air transport sector, reported Muscat Daily. The agreement was formalised on Saturday by Saeed Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and Chairman of Board of Directors of Oman Airports, and Hassan al Abayji, Chairman of Teebat Karbala Company. The partnership is part of broader civil aviation cooperation between Oman and Iraq. It aims to develop airport infrastructure and improve operational capacity in line with international aviation standards. As part of the agreement, a team of Omani technical, administrative and operations personnel will be stationed in Karbala for 15 months. Their responsibilities will include preparing the airport for its initial phase of operations and training local staff. The deployment is expected to ensure the airport meets international benchmarks in terms of safety, service and efficiency. Abayji described Karbala International Airport as one of the most vital aviation projects in Iraq. 'This agreement reflects a significant step in strengthening cooperation between Iraq and Oman.' The airport is strategically located between the cities of Karbala and Najaf. It is designed to handle 2mn passengers annually in its first phase, with capacity expected to grow to 6mn in the second phase and eventually reach 20mn. Oman Airports, which manages six airports in the sultanate, is known for its expertise in airport operations. The company's involvement is expected to bring proven technical and administrative know-how to the Iraqi project.

Oman Air Offers Year-Round Moscow Flights with Introduction of New Summer Schedule

Oman Air has announced the extension of its popular Muscat-Moscow service to operate year-round. Building on the route's success and increasing demand between Russia and Oman, the airline will now offer up to three weekly flights between May and September, complementing its existing winter service, which includes up to six flights per week from October to April. His Excellency Eng. Saeed Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and IT, and Chairman of Oman Air, said, 'The introduction of summer flights marks a return to full-year operations in Moscow, further strengthening Oman Air's presence in this key route and underscoring the importance of the Russia-Oman corridor for tourism, trade and cultural exchange. As the airline continues to invest in strategically relevant markets, we are pleased to support Oman's broader vision for global engagement and economic diversification.' Con Korfiatis, Chief Executive Officer of Oman Air, added, 'Moscow has proven to be a high-performing route in our network, and its year-round operation enables us to meet growing demand across all seasons while reaching a broader market. This expansion strengthens connectivity for our guests, supports our wider network strategy by linking Russia to destinations across the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Africa via Muscat, while also contributing positively to Oman's tourism goals.' For the summer schedule, flights between Muscat and Moscow will operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays during May and June, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from July to September. The service will be operated by the latest generation B737 Max-8 aircraft featuring two cabin classes – Business and Economy. Guests can look forward to the airline's renowned Omani hospitality and award-winning service, offering a seamless experience throughout the year.
