AFL 2025: Top-10 draft pick Alix Tauru set to debut for St Kilda
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon is adamant his team is on track to 'pop' in coming seasons and will pursue plans to 'bang games' into young players.
Alix Tauru is set to become the club's seventh debutant for 2025 when he plays against Collingwood on Saturday.
St Kilda's progression under Lyon has been called into question after netting just five wins for the year, but he said 'we can't jump in and be four years down the track' and pointed to the Adelaide Crows' slow build as a 'great model' of what patience could bring.
Tauru, 18 and taken at pick 10 in last year's draft, endured a four-week VFL suspension but looms as an 'exciting' inclusion as Lyon declared the youth project remained his key focus to get the Saints back to the top and he wouldn't be swayed in the search for immediate returns.
'It's pretty exciting. That would put us second for debuts this year with seven (behind Essendon, with 11),' he said on Thursday.

'Over the past two seasons we are top two, all our data, young players, debutants … games into players 22 and under in the last two years we sit comfortably in the top four in the comp. We'll keep pursuing that.
'There's no time warp machine, we can't jump in and be four years down the track. You can't buy experience, you have to bang games into them.
'Our strategic plan, it's evolved, but it's been really clear.
'I'll go back to the data set, it's indisputable, I can comfortably talk about games into players 22 and under. Nas (Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera), when I got here, he'd played one year.
'Over 23, 24 and 25, he's become an elite player in the competition. We're doing a lot right, but it takes time.'
Lyon said the Crows, who have surged into the tour four in 2025, showed what could be achieved, aided by being able to 'lure' players to the club, with St Kilda pursuing Carlton big man Tom De Koning.

'Adelaide is a great model, on metrics of games 22 and under they were second, second, fourth and now they are 16th (in past season),' he said.
'So at some point you get that experience, attract players to your club, and you pop.'
While star St Kilda forward Max King suffered a setback in his recovery from a knee injury, Lyon said Paddy Dow would return through the VFL having missed six months after a series of issues stemming from a staph infection.
'He had that staph infection in his knee, had a blister in his toe, then the staph went through the blister and resulted in numerous arthroscopes and it was a really serious situation,' Lyon said.
'He has carried himself extremely well. I don't think I've met a better young man in football. His resilience, his temperament, his embracing of his teammates … we're thrilled he's coming back. He's a talented midfielder who we have missed.'

AFL inspects SCG as decision day looms over Dockers game
Confidence is growing that Sunday's game between Fremantle and Sydney will remain at the SCG after an AFL expert examined changes made to the playing surface on Tuesday. Ground staff have been working since Friday to fix the issues that left Swans and Western Bulldogs players constantly falling over on Friday night. Work will continue throughout the week with a decision expected to be made on Friday as to whether the game will remain at the SCG or be moved. Dockers coach Justin Longmuir addressed the issue with his players during a team meeting on Tuesday, telling them to focus on their preparation instead of concerning themselves with where the game will be played. But vice-captain Andrew Brayshaw won't be taking any risks with his ability to stand up. Brayshaw will be packing multiple sets of boots and making a decision on which gives him the most traction during the warm up. Footwear will be vital if the Dockers play at the SCG. They also suggested ENGIE Stadium as a venue for Fremantle's Captain's Run on Saturday given it is unlikely they'll get early access to the SCG even if the game is played there. The Dockers have won their past two games at the SCG and also won at ENGIE Stadium during their clash against the Giants there in round 10. Fremantle are in form having won six games in a row and have only produced seven-match winning streaks three times in club history. Brayshaw said they were excited about playing anywhere. Warwick Farm preview: Nathan Doyle keeps faith in apprentice jockey Shannen Llewellyn after impressive win on Aroha Stone
Apprentice jockey Shannen Llewellyn impressed new boss Nathan Doyle with her winning ride on Aroha Stone and he didn't hesitate in keeping the combination together as they make their metropolitan debuts. Llewellyn had only been with Doyle 's Newcastle stable for 10 days when she guided Aroha Stone to a near two length win from Cha Cha Cha over 1600m at Gosford. It was also just reward for Aroha Stone who was just pipped by stablemate Caltsar at Kembla the start prior. 'They did get all the favours. They went lickety-split up front and she just camped behind them,' said David Dyson, Doyle's racing manager. 'That was Shannen's (Llewellyn) first ride for the stable and she did everything right. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'She never went around a horse, quickly pouncing on the inside run when it come and they were too strong late. 'Each run this preparation has been good in its own right. 'Nathan has always thought she was a metropolitan class filly and she gets the chance to prove it this week,' Dyson said. The daughter of American Pharoah was the victim of a wide barrier when resuming in the 1200m Midway Handicap at Rosehill on June 14. Having to go back to last in the field of 14, American Starlet was spotting the leaders a conservative eight lengths approaching the home turn before closing nicely between horses to finish just over two lengths off Motoscafo in fifth place. 'She ran really well first-up. She closed off very well and the jockey (Braith Nock) came back very happy,' said John Thompson. American Starlet has fared much better in the draw this week where she drew barrier 3 in the Castelvecchio @ Arrowfield Handicap (1400m) with Braith Nock again on board. 'This is another nice race for her. Up a little bit in distance suits, she's got a good draw and a good rider so she ticks a few boxes,' Thompson said. Welcome Gypsy has been a victim of outside barriers in both starts back from a spell forcing her to endure wide runs in Benchmark 78 races at Randwick. She has again drawn out in the Brave Smash @ Yarraman Park Handicap Benchmark 72 (1000m) where she has gate 9. 'She just can't draw a barrier,' Thompson said. 'This is a good drop in grade for her though so that should help. 'She can run a much improved race. 'She loves it wet, a Heavy 10 is her go. She's a swimmer. 'The draw could turn out to be not so bad because they will probably want to get to the middle of the track. She will go forward and make her own luck.' Stablemate Hellaine also has a wide gate to overcome in the but will relish the wet track. 'She hasn't had much luck of late. Doing it a bit tough up front,' he said.
