More safety changes promised for Cumbria M6 junction 37

National Highways has promised more changes to a motorway junction over growing safety agency said it was "committed" to further measures for junction 37 on the M6 in Cumbria before the end of March. The road carries the A684 over the motorway near Kendal and there have been a number of serious crashes and near misses.A number of improvements have already been made but National Highways said it was looking at options to "further improve safety". Bruce Parker from National Highways said: "We recognise this is a location where there have been a number of very tragic incidents in the past, so this is very much a priority location for us."He said the "vast majority" of drivers were looking to check if the road was clear, but there continued to be instances when motorists did not notice the junction ahead."We are working closely with the police who are similarly perplexed why the issue appears to be happening," he added."If people are ignoring the stop signs, why would they not ignore a traffic light."What we don't want to do is spend lots of money making changes to the junction for it to have no impact." 'Improve awareness' In a statement National Highways confirmed it was looking at options to further improve said: "We expect to deliver those improvements, once identified, in the current financial year. "We need to be confident that any additional measures will improve driver awareness without the risk of causing confusion." Follow BBC Cumbria on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.

The VW Passat just got far more appealing with £5k of options for free

Volkswagen has updated the line-up of the plug-in hybrid version of the Passat by adding two new versions, called Match and Black Edition. The company claims that up to £4,905 of options now come free of charge. Joining the mid-range £47,650 Elegance, the entry-level Match replaces the old Life trim, but costs the same £45,555. The Black Edition costs the same as the outgoing R-Line, from £48,900, and Volkswagen says the new editions can be ordered from 14 August. Match is better equipped than the outgoing Life, with additional features including metallic paint, VW's LED matrix headlights, tinted rear windows and an 'assistance pack' which adds area view and emergency assist. The new Match and Black Edition trims are offered only on the PHEV Passat, which uses a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a plug-in hybrid system featuring a 19.7kWh battery – enough for an 82-mile electric-only range. The pricing quoted above is based on the 201bhp Passat eHybrid, but from £50,370 you also can get the more potent 268bhp version starting with Elegance trim. Kris Meeke reveals the two things he's relying on to help banish his Rali Vinho da Madeira hoodoo

The 46-year-old makes his fifth start at the island-based event this evening, determined to banish past disappointments and return to the podium's top step with Stuart Loudon. Meeke's single best performance on Madeira came in 2009 during his Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) days when he finished fifth overall as a Peugeot UK-backed driver. Retirement beckoned the following year when his car developed an oil leak, followed by a bad accident in 2023 that left him injured, and a ten-minute time penalty last season. 'Madeira has not exactly been a happy place for me; the first time was in 2009 and it was tough,' said Meeke, who currently holds a slim five point lead over Armindo Araujo in the Portuguese Rally Championship points' standings after the opening five rounds. 'Since then, I have had two more attempts where, again, luck was not on my side. This year, however, I am bringing more experience and – above all – I am bringing a car that I love.' Meeke has quickly gelled with the GR Yaris Rally2 since his switch to it after two spells in a Hyundai i20 N Rally2, beginning the defence of his crown with three consecutive wins. Since then, late suspension damage meant he failed to finish Rally de Portugal and lost maximum points in the process, with a retrospective time penalty on last month's Rali de Castelo Branco handing the win to his close friend and rival, Dani Sordo. 'The GR Yaris Rally2 was incredible in Castelo Branco, perhaps even better on asphalt than on dirt,' said Meeke. 'Of course, I know that the Portuguese drivers know all of these stages very well, as they have been doing this race for 20 years, so the challenge will be enormous – but I am very happy to be back in Madeira and to give my all for a good result.' He added: 'It was really tough to lose in Castelo Branco like that, but I am very happy with the performance. The duel with Dani was excellent – he is one of the best asphalt drivers in the world – so I really had to give it my all to stay ahead of him. When the battle is like that, decided by tenths of a second on such fast stages, it is a real pleasure to compete.' Comprising 13 special stages, the first is the short Cidade do Funchal street stage this evening (7.30pm) followed by six on Friday and a further six on the Saturday.
