England Stunned by France 2-1 in Women's Euros Opener
A bright start for England resulted in a disallowed goal before giving way to a flat, listless performance that saw them concede two goals in the first half and, despite a late onslaught following a Keira Walsh goal, there were few positives England could take from the game.
Faced with the lightning counter-attacking of France, England could not afford to give away the ball but they did so repeatedly and cheaply, especially in the middle of the field.
'The positive is that I've not seen us like that, in terms of turning the ball over so much, for a while,' England captain Leah Williamson said. 'When you lose the ball cheaply, you're defending in an emergency. When you concede four or five counter-attacks in a row against quality like France have, it is tough.'
As England coach Sarina Wiegman pointed out after the game, the French were selective in how they pressed, waiting until England tried to pass their way out of small spaces and pouncing on any poor touch that was made.
The French attack, which often looked static on the night, took winning possession as a cue to surge towards the English goal and by the time the Lionesses showed any sign of solving the puzzle posed by the French press, it was too late.
England now face Netherlands on Wednesday knowing another defeat will see them out of the competition.
'It was a big game as it was but now it's an even bigger game for us as a must-win,' winger Beth Mead said. 'We'll analyse this game that we've just played, we'll put ourselves in good stead, and we'll prepare the best we can for the Netherlands game.'

Soccer-Swiss beat Iceland 2-0 to keep alive Women's Euro knockout hopes
Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group A - Switzerland v Iceland - Wankdorf Stadium, Bern, Switzerland - July 6, 2025 Switzerland's Geraldine Reuteler scores their first goal REUTERS/Denis Balibouse BERN (Reuters) -Geraldine Reuteler got the opening goal and Alayah Pilgrim scored a late second as hosts Switzerland beat Iceland 2-0 on Sunday to keep alive their hopes of a place in the knockout stage by registering their first win in Group A at the Women's Euros, With both sides having lost their opening game there was little margin for error, but the Swiss almost went behind in the first minute when Ingibjorg Sigurdarsdottir sent a thunderous shot off the crossbar, shocking the majority of the 29,658 fans in attendance. It took until the 76th minute for Reuteler to break the deadlock in a tough, tense encounter as Iceland lost the ball in midfield and Sydney Schertenlieb slid it into her path to fire home, and Pilgrim finished a Swiss counter-attack with a deflected shot that flew into the net to wrap up the three points. After Norway's 2-1 win over Finland earlier in the day moved them to the top of the group, the Swiss move up to second spot ahead of Finland on goal difference, while bottom side Iceland now have no chance of progressing. The Swiss take on Finland in their final group game in Geneva on Wednesday, with Iceland facing group leaders Norway, who have now qualified for the last eight, in Thun. Soccer-Bonmati's health remains priority, Tome says ahead of Belgium game
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - UEFA Women's Euro 2025 - Group B - Spain v Portugal - Stadion Wankdorf, Bern, Switzerland - July 3, 2025 Spain's Aitana Bonmati REUTERS/Denis Balibouse/File Photo (Reuters) -Spain's twice Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati is keen to start against Belgium on Monday at the Women's Euros, but manager Montse Tome is leaning on the side of caution a week after the midfielder was released from hospital after viral meningitis. The 27-year-old played the final nine minutes in the world champions' 5-0 thrashing of Portugal on Thursday, and was itching to play a bigger role. "I'm ready for 90 minutes and more," the Barcelona player said in an interview with RTVE. "You know my mentality and my ambition; if I'm healthy, I'm never going to complain." Bonmati was frustrated at spending most of the Portugal game on the bench, Tome said, stressing that her health was the main consideration. "She has a very high mental capacity. She's super focused in the tournament," Tome told reporters on Sunday. "It's a pity she was sick at the beginning. We were afraid at the beginning, when we knew what she had, but she recovered very quickly. "The other day, talking to the medical services, she played what she could play, because priority was her health. "That's the line we will follow. Aitana is available (on Monday), and we will decide what the game, the team needs and what's most suitable with all the information we have. "But the positive thing is that she's fine, and she recovered." Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll will also be available against Belgium, Tome said, after being ill with what Spanish media reported was tonsillitis. "We'll decide if she'll be playing or not. I think the Belgium coach (Elisabet Gunnarsdottir) is wondering if she's playing or not, but we're not giving any additional information," Tome said. "But the positive thing is that she is improving, and that what she has is not serious." Spain, who have never won the Women's Euros but are favourites in Switzerland, top Group B, while Belgium are third having lost their opener 1-0 to Italy. Arsenal sign Spain's Martin Zubimendi as Arteta reshapes midfield
LONDON, July 6 — Arsenal today announced the signing of midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad after they reportedly triggered his £51 million (RM253 million) release clause. Euro 2024 winner Zubimendi had previously been a target for Liverpool and was also linked with Real Madrid. 'This is a huge moment in my career,' said the defensive midfielder, who is understood to have put pen to paper on a five-year deal. 'It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are. 'I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.' The BBC reported the deal is worth almost £60 million (RM298 million), with Arsenal opting to pay more than the release clause in order to spread the cost of the fee. Zubimendi, 26, made 236 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad after graduating from the club's academy and has played 19 times for Spain. He will reinforce manager Mikel Arteta's midfield options after Thomas Partey's contract expired and Jorginho left the club. Zubimendi's arrival paves the way for Arsenal's record-signing Declan Rice to play a more attacking midfield role alongside captain Martin Odegaard. 'Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team,' said Arteta. 'He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.' Zubimendi is Arsenal's second signing of the summer transfer window after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga joined from Chelsea as they seek to improve on three consecutive second-placed Premier League finishes. The Gunners are also expected to complete the signing of midfielder Christian Norgaard from Brentford. Attention will now turn to the forward line as Arsenal try to see off Liverpool and Manchester City and claim a first league title since 2003/04. Arteta's men had to cope without a natural striker for much of last season due to long-term injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres are reportedly the two leading candidates to fill the need for a new number nine. — AFP
