What happened to María Ángeles Molina, the killer in Netflix's 'Angi: Fake Life, True Crime'
María Ángeles Molina — aka Angi — took out numerous loans in Ana Paez's name.
At the time, the media described it as "the near-perfect crime."
"Angi: Fake Life, True Crime" tells the story of a woman who murdered her coworker but tried to make it appear as though she died during a sex game gone wrong in order to steal her identity.
The Netflix documentary, which was released on Friday, adds to the streamer's vast library of true crime content, which includes "American Nightmare," "Monster," and "Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer."
In 2008, María Ángeles Molina — also known as Angi — invited her coworker Ana Páez, a fashion designer, to her apartment in Barcelona, where she drugged her with chloroform before putting a sealed bag over her head. She also planted semen samples from two male sex workers at the scene.
In 2012, Spanish outlet El Pais reported that a man testified at Molina's trial that she had visited his brothel where the sex workers were employed.
"She said she didn't want sex but had made a bet with friends that she would sleep with a gigolo," Juan Manuel D. told the court.
El Pais reported that Molina masqueraded as Páez for two years before killing her. She took out several life insurance policies and lines of credit in Páez's name between April 2006 and November 2007, El Confidencial reported, and was seen on CCTV in a Barcelona bank wearing a wig to impersonate Páez in 2007.
Molina's boyfriend at the time also gave the authorities documents he found belonging to Páez, including her passport, hidden in the their bathroom.
The case was referred to by the media as "the near-perfect crime," according to Netflix.
In March 2012, the Barcelona High Court sentenced Molina to 22 years in prison, which the Supreme Court later reduced to 18 years, El Confidencial reported. She was convicted of homicide and the falsification of documents.
She is serving her sentence in the Mas D'Enric prison in the Tarragona province, northeast Spain.
She was originally set for release in 2027. However, in March 2025, Molina was arrested a second time while on leave from prison. The authorities alleged Molina planned another homicide from inside the prison and used her temporary release to target someone else, El Confidencial reported.
The Spanish news site reported that the police suspected Molina was planning to use a hitman to carry out the killing, but did not say who the intended target was.
El Confidencial reported Molina had chosen not to testify before a judge in this new case.

"It makes comedians feel like rock stars." Michelle Buteau is 'tired' of people being told their 'not worthy' With the success of Survival of the Thickest, the show has been praised for being particularly sex-positive, as the lead character Mavis (played by Buteau) works to thrive mentally, emotionally and sexually. "When we talk about mental health and making people feel good, it isn't just about how you look. It's about how you feel. And it's about how you feel in all chapters of your life," Buteau said. "So whether it is a piece of clothing, whether it is food, whether it is attention, whether it is sex, all of it is meant to build you up, not tear you down." "[I'm] sick and tired of the conversation, especially in and around the arts, film and TV, of bigger bodies always having to feel very grateful that someone finds them desirable, which is just plain bullshit. ... Since the beginning of time there has been thick people who have been loved on and dicked down. It's just like, excuse me, why is this such a wild concept that somebody would love their body? And honestly, it is what we are going through today and what we've been going through also since the beginning of time. It's control. It is a mental prison. If you tell people they are not worthy ... they're going to believe you, they're not going to feel good about themselves. And I'm so tired of that." Buteau added that what's great about having Survival of the Thickest on Netflix, which is available in 190 countries, is how many people she can reach with the show's core messaging. "I know that I can reach people of all gender expressions, of all sizes and shapes, and say, 'Hey boo, you look f—king good and you're worthy of whatever you want,'" she said. "That's why I made my character a stylist, because I think the platform of fashion can showcase the injustices. ... It's also a good excuse to be like, 'Hey, I need a lot of money for fashion.'" While we already know that Season 3 of Survival of the Thickest will be the show's last, a tough hit for many fans, Buteau is ready to go out with impact. "It feels earned and deserved," Buteau said. "I'm really lucky ... that I found something I love to do, and so I don't take the responsibility lightly. We're going to blow it up ... in the best possible way." "I know people are bummed that it won't be coming back, but it's actually such a gift to know that it is the third and final. I don't think a lot of platforms and networks give you that information all the time."

The show has celebrity panels who help and advise, but Building the Band turns an almost radical amount of power over to its contestants, and you'll ultimately find yourself deeply invested in the bands that they form. What was most surprising about Mom was the way the series managed to meld its most serious ideas with genuine comedy. The series follows a struggling single mother who is also a recovering alcoholic as her mom, another recovering alcoholic, waltzes back into her life. Mom took addiction seriously, and Anna Faris and Allison Janney were both up to the task of playing complex characters. Without fail, Mom was also deeply funny, and that's why it works. You can watch Mom on Netflix. House of Lies (2012-2016) Although it was never the most popular prestige comedy of its era, House of Lies was nonetheless a dark and funny series with an all-star cast. The show follows a group of consultants who are deeply clever and convince corporations of all kinds to pay for services from them that they almost definitely don't need. Led by Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, this ensemble comedy was a little bit of a precursor to shows like Succession, although the characters on this show aren't quite that wealthy. Many of The Matrix's elements — fight choreography, slow motion, wire fu techniques, and philosophical themes — inspired an entire generation of movies. The Wedding Singer (1998) If Happy Gilmore 2 becomes a hit, perhaps Netflix would want to explore another sequel to another Adam Sandler '90s movie, The Wedding Singer. Before 1998, Sandler was best known for his juvenile and immature humor. The Wedding Singer displayed Sandler's softer side, proving something that many of us have known for years — the Sandman is one of Hollywood's most versatile actors. The kind-hearted Robbie Hart (Sandler) is left at the altar on his wedding day. To make matters worse, Robbie works as a wedding singer, meaning he's constantly surrounded by love and happiness, two things he has yet to find. The only thing snapping him out of his depression is Julia (Drew Barrymore), a cheerful waitress who asks Robbie to help plan her wedding. As the two bond over wedding plans, Robbie realizes he loves Julia and wants to be the one to marry her. Grow Old With You is a Hall of Fame Sandler song. Stream The Wedding Singer on Tubi. The Worst Person in the World (2021) Do not take the title, The Worst Person in the World, at face value. Renate Reinsve's Julie might believe she's a bad person, but in actuality, she's confused about her life and afraid of the future. It's a normal feeling for anyone in Julie's shoes, an unmarried twentysomething transitioning into her 30s. Divided into 12 chapters, a prologue, and an epilogue, The Worst Person in the World explores Julie's romantic life, including her relationships with a comic artist (Anders Danielsen Lie) and a barista (Herbert Nordrum). The spectacular Reinsve injects passion, charisma, and depth into her character while subverting our expectations in a familiar genre.
