5 Jimmy O. Yang movies and shows to watch if you aren't going to his Hong Kong stand-up show
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Arguably the one movie that put Jimmy O. Yang on most people's radars. This romcom box office hit put Singapore on everyone's travel bucket list, and was the first film out of a major Hollywood studio to feature a majority cast of Chinese descent. For those who haven't yet seen it (where have you been hiding?) the film follows Rachel Chu (played by Constance Wu) who meets her boyfriend Nick's (Henry Golding) family, only to find out that they're wealthy enough to be modern-day Singaporean royalty. Jimmy O. Yang stars as Bernard Tai, Nick's obnoxious friend.
Love Hard (2021)
Christmastime is full of cheesy movies, and this one should be on your list. A portmanteau of two of the most-loved Christmas movies – Love Actually and Die Hard – Love Hard follows Natalie (played by Nina Dobrev) who travels to surprise her online crush for Christmas, only to find she has been catfished. Josh is actually Jimmy O. Yang, using photos of his hunky friend Tag (Darren Barnet), but he asks Natalie to pretend to be his girlfriend for the holidays in return for setting her up with Tag. Obviously, misunderstandings and hilarity ensue, wrapped up with a sweet ending.
The Monkey King (2023)
There have been many adaptations of the classic Chinese story Journey to the West, but this is a new animated rendition for Netflix that was selected as the closing film at the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival, and also features a host of Asian-American actors in its cast. O. Yang voices the titular character of the Monkey King, who sets out on a riotous journey to prove his worth, challenge the gods, and gain immortality. A fun action-packed romp that delves into the back story of one of the most well-known characters in Chinese culture.
The Opening Act (2020)
This movie is probably the closest you'll get to seeing O. Yang's comedy show from home, since he stars as Will Chu, a young man who wants to become a stand-up comedian. He later has the opportunity to emcee a comedy show and open for his stand-up hero Billy G (played by Cedric the Entertainer), and has to decide whether to continue his safe life path or throw caution to the wind and pursue his passion. The cast of The Opening Act features plenty of other American comedians and comedic actors such as Ken Jeong, Alex Moffat, Russell Peters, Iliza Shlesinger, Bill Burr, and more.
Interior Chinatown (2024)
This Hulu comedy-drama series is based on Charles Yu's novel of the same name, and follows Willis Wu, a waiter at a Chinese restaurant named the Golden Palace. Unbeknownst to him, he is actually just a background character in a fictional police crime drama, literally labelled sad things as 'Generic Asian Man' or 'Background Oriental Male'. But when Wu decides to investigate his brother's disappearance, he starts to uncover secrets and understand the machinations behind his fake Chinatown. Interior Chinatown also sees O. Yang reuniting with his Crazy Rich Asians costar Ronny Chieng, who plays Fatty Choi, Wu's best friend.

Kesha reveals regret over grisly lyric that got her canceled... after changing Diddy line
Kesha has expressed regret over yet another of her song lyrics - a little over a year after permanently changing a line about Sean 'Diddy' Combs in her 2009 debut single TikTok. This time, the 38-year-old pop star was referring to the lyric 'Be too sweet, and you'll be a goner (Yep) / I'll pull a Jeffrey Dahmer' from her 2010 song Cannibal. 'Oh my God, I got re-canceled for the Jeffrey Dahmer lyric. It was a controversial lyric,' Kesha (last name Sebert) admitted to People on Thursday. 'If some people aren't offended by what I'm doing, I'm probably not doing a very good job of being a pop star.' Between 1978 and 1991, the notorious serial killer raped, killed, and dismembered 17 boys and men - Steven Hicks (18), Steven Tuomi (28), James Doxtator (14), Richard Guerrero (25), Anthony Sears (24), Ricky Beeks (33), Eddie Smith (28), Ernest Miller (24), David Thomas (23), Curtis Straughter (18), Errol Lindsey (19), Anthony Hughes (31), Konerak Sinthasomphone (14), Matt Turner (20), Jeremiah Weinberger (23), Oliver Lacy (23), and Joseph Bradehoft (25). Jeffrey - otherwise known as the Milwaukee Monster or the Milwaukee Cannibal - had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, schizotypal personality disorder, and a psychotic disorder before he was beaten to death by a fellow Columbia Correctional Institution inmate in 1994. In 2022, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan released their dismally-reviewed Netflix crime thriller, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starring Evan Peters, which depicted his unimaginable crimes and the victims desperate for justice. The two-time Grammy nominee previously altered her track TikTok from 'Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy' to 'Wake up in the morning like f*** P. Diddy' during Reneé Rapp's 2024 Coachella set. 'Yes, it will be [permanent]. The fans should learn it for my upcoming [shows]. I want to hear it louder than ever. I stand by that,' Kesha told TMZ at the time. 'I'm not the kind of person that shuts the f*** up. I know what I stand for, I know my integrity is rock-solid, so I speak the truth. The industry can kinda, like, suck my d***.' The LA native tweeted her support for Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura on Wednesday following the shocking split verdict at her disgraced 55-year-old ex's seven-week federal criminal trial. 'Cassie, I believe you,' Kesha - who boasts 43.1M social media followers - tweeted. 'I love you. Your strength is a beacon for every survivor.' Diddy was facing life in prison before a jury of eight men and four women found him not guilty of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges. However, the rap mogul was found guilty on two counts of the Mann Act aka transportation for the purposes of prostitution for flying paid escorts around the country for his baby oil-drenched sex orgies dubbed 'freak offs.' Both Cassie and 'Jane Doe' - who testified at the trial - submitted letters to US District Judge Arun Subramanian requesting Diddy remain held at MDC Brooklyn's Special Housing Unit before his sentencing, which he granted Wednesday evening. Between 1978 and 1991, the notorious serial killer raped, killed, and dismembered 17 boys and men In 2022, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan released their dismally-reviewed Netflix crime thriller, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starring Evan Peters (M), which depicted his unimaginable crimes and the victims desperate for justice Subramanian scheduled a remote hearing for next Tuesday at 2pm ET to address the detailed scheduling for sentencing, which happens October 3 at 10 a.m. ET. The three-time Grammy winner - who's already been incarcerated for 10 months - faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, but prosecutors hope the sentence is at least 51 months (4.25 years). But some legal experts are predicting Diddy will face far less time - as little as 18 and 24 months. The Harlem-born hip-hop star's legal battles are far from over as he still has over a hundred civil lawsuits from accusers including Joi Dickerson-Neal, Liza Gardner, Rodney 'Lil Rod' Jones, Crystal McKinney, April Lampros, Adria English, Derrick Lee Cardello-Smith, Dawn Richard, Thalia Graves, Ashley Parham, Bryana 'Bana' Bongolan, LaTroya Grayson, Phillip Pines, and Joseph Manzaroc. It's been two years since Kesha settled her nine-year legal battle against her former producer Dr. Luke - whom she accused of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse as well as workplace discrimination (all of which he denied). The Yippee-Ki-Yay singer also parted ways with the 51-year-old Grammy nominee's (born Łukasz Sebastian Gottwald) Kemosabe Label as well as RCA Records and Vector Management. Kesha proudly 'gained back legal rights over my own voice' and her sixth studio album Period - dropping this Friday - will officially mark the first from her very own label, Kesha Records. Kesha told TMZ: 'Yes, it will be [permanent]. The fans should learn it for my upcoming [shows]. I want to hear it louder than ever. I stand by that. I'm not the kind of person that shuts the f*** up. I know what I stand for, I know my integrity is rock-solid, so I speak the truth' 'Cassie, I believe you,' Kesha - who boasts 43.1M social media followers - tweeted. 'I love you. Your strength is a beacon for every survivor' Kesha and the Scissor Sisters will next bring their joint 26-date The T**s Out Tour to the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA on Thursday night 'For this chapter I really wanted to capture the moments where I felt liberated, safe, happy, playful, hot, horny, but all of it was coming from a whole place. I feel very whole,' the Brentwood High School drop-out told People. 'Now all of my energy gets to focus back on my true purpose — helping people feel seen, loved, safe and f***ing entertained as hell. My power is all back in my hands, and I'm excited.' Kesha and the Scissor Sisters will next bring their joint 26-date The T**s Out Tour to the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA on Thursday night.

Sandman series two branded 'so pretentious it has ruined everything' as critics skewer Netflix for 'turning a dreamy tale into a waking nightmare'
The Sandman season two has been branded 'so pretentious it has ruined everything' and critics have skewered Netflix for 'turning a dreamy tale into a waking nightmare'. Season one was released back in 2022 and was based on the bestselling graphic novel by Neil Gaiman. The author was recently hit with sexual misconduct allegations from eight women, which he denies. Gaiman said back in January: 'I'm far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.' The series follows Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) as he 'embarks on a journey across worlds to find what was stolen from him and restore his power,' according to the synopsis. Starring Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Mark Hamill, amongst others, the new instalment launched on Netflix on July 3 has received mixed reviews. The Guardian slammed The Sandman's second season with only two out of five stars and claimed 'Neil Gaiman's emo drama is so pretentious, it ruins everything'. It describes how 'a fug of pretension' 'smothers' the show adding, 'missing every opportunity it creates for itself'. While the Metro rated it a more impressive four out of five stars and urged 'Don't let the Neil Gaiman accusations ruin The Sandman season 2'. They praised the 'fantastic' cast and added, 'it's those playing the Endless who I found most impressive'. The Independent however, was less impressed and only rated the new series two out of five stars. It wrote how the show felt 'like being trapped in a whirlwind of plot and intrigue' but that it 'never materialises into something solid enough to get to grips with'. While The Telegraph scored the series four out of five and described it as 'brilliant'. Though they felt, 'for Netflix, you suspect this dreamy tale has become a waking nightmare that can't end too soon' and claimed 'Neil Gaiman's involvement casts a shadow'. The Wrap however, has described the new instalment as 'mesmerizing in the best way'. It comes after the first season soon soared to number one on Netflix's Top 10 list following its debut. Gaiman's comic book series was first published from 1989-1996, but previous attempts to bring his beloved story to film were held up for years until Netflix signed a deal to produce the show in 2019. The Sandman seasons one and two are available to stream on Netflix.
