Carol McGiffin slams Loose Women stars and shares 'truth' behind ITV budget cuts
Carol McGiffin hasn't held back in her criticism of ITV's daytime lineup, branding shows like Loose Women, This Morning, and Good Morning Britain as 'rubbish' and out of touch with audiences.
Speaking on Dan Wootton's Outspoken podcast, the former Loose Women regular, who appeared on and off between 2000 and 2023, slammed ITV for reportedly trying to win back viewers by bringing in influencers.
'They can stand there and say, 'The reason that we're suffering is because of online TV, people don't watch TV anymore, they go online for news or entertainment or anything, or streaming services,'' she said. 'Maybe it's just because it's rubbish and they just aren't very good at it anymore. They don't consider that.'
Carol returned to Loose Women with high hopes, but was left disappointed. 'When I went back to Loose Women, I thought, 'This is great, we might be able to make Loose Women great again.' But it just proved completely impossible.'
She added: 'Sometimes, if I've ever seen anything on This Morning or on YouTube or whatever, you just think, 'This is ridiculous! This is not popular. This is not what people want.''
Taking aim at ITV's strategy, she said: 'They really don't know what people want, and they tell them what they want all the time and they give it to them and force it down their throats.'
She also criticized ITV's assumption that influencers would attract younger viewers: 'A lot of young people never watch television… The fact that ITV thinks, 'If we get all these young influencers on, everyone's going to start watching daytime TV,' is just ridiculous.'
Addressing recent job cuts and shortened programming - Loose Women will air just 30 weeks a year from 2026 - Carol said she feels 'really bad' for those affected but questioned the dramatic reactions from her former co-stars.
'The Loose Women are apparently raging about it – I haven't spoken to any of them about it. They are like, 'We were kept in the dark.' They never know what's going on. Loose Women is the poor relation so is suffering the most.'
She added: 'I do feel for them, but I don't buy into this, 'All their worlds have fallen apart because this show has ended.' Hang on a minute – what did you expect? Did you think it was just going on forever? Especially in the way it is.'
Carol's comments come as ITV is making significant cuts to its daytime programming, including reducing the number of weeks that Loose Women and Lorraine air, as well as merging the production teams behind Lorraine, This Morning, and Loose Women.
These changes are part of a broader cost-cutting effort, which will also see some presenters like Andi Peters and Jeff Brazier no longer sent on location for competitions. The changes have led to staff redundancies and concerns about the future of the shows.

Marvel Rivals Season 2 end date and when you'll say goodbye to the Hellfire Gala
Marvel Rivals is getting ready to launch its third season, introducing Blade and Jean Grey to the hero shooter, but before that players will need to say goodbye to the current season. Marvel Rivals is set to introduce Jean Grey and Blade soon, but first, we must conclude the current season before moving onto these exciting new additions. Marvel Rivals continues to offer thrilling experiences for players seeking a taste of comic book-inspired hero shooter action. Despite facing stiff competition from Fortnite and its Squid Grounds Reload map, the game has maintained its appeal, particularly with the introduction of Emma Frost and the evil Ultron, each bringing their unique playstyles. The successful launch of Mecha Break demonstrates that players are still eager to engage with the gameplay styling of the hero shooter, and as Marvel Rivals continues to evolve, it seems as though everyone wins, especially comic book fans. As a new season looms, featuring villains led by Hela and Knull, players are kept on their toes. The most anticipated features are the new playable characters, Blade and Jean Grey, along with a range of new cosmetics, including Hela's expected Symbiote-ified costume. Fans can also look forward to more maps and modes being gradually released throughout the season, providing even more reasons to explore the game's latest offerings. However, we're still waiting for the Marvel Rivals Season 2 end date to arrive before we can dive into the new season. So when exactly can we anticipate this chapter closing and a new one beginning in Marvel Rivals? Here's what you need to know about the Marvel Rivals Season 2 end date. Marvel Rivals Season 2 end date The conclusion of Marvel Rivals Season 2 is scheduled for Friday, July 11 at 2am PDT / 5am EDT / 10am BST. According to a recent tweet from Marvel Rivals, it is at this time that the game will enter its maintenance period, expected to last between two and four hours, before launching into Season 3. This is set to cause quite a stir, particularly as Blade fans have been left without the representation promised by the MCU with its continually postponed vampire hunter film. Plus, in any case, it's nice to see a hero shooter reach some success after the appearance of Overwatch 2 squandered the gaming structure for many. We'll be glad to take Blade to the fight.

The Chase's Darragh Ennis says 'It cannot be replaced' as he opens up on show's strict rule
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Darragh Ennis, known as 'The Menace' on ITV show The Chase, has shared insights into a strict rule he must follow regarding his wardrobe on the show. In a recent episode of the Guestimators podcast, host Andy Bush informed listeners that the Irish entomologist was dressed down during his appearance. He contrasted Darragh's casual attire to the "lavish suits" he usually wears on The Chase, where he stars alongside fellow Chasers Mark Labbett, Jenny Ryan, Anne Hegerty, Shaun Wallace, and Paul Sinha. Darragh secured the role in 2020 after appearing on the show as a contestant, having previously admitted he signed up for the series when experiencing financial issues. The quizzer, who is also a neuroscientist at the University of Oxford, revealed that he wears "ridiculous" jackets on the show and has to return them immediately afterwards. (Image: Dave) Darragh explained: "I have very ridiculous suits. So, it's made out of velvet, and it was made very specifically for me. Well, the jacket was, so that's handmade, tailor-made, and it cannot be replaced because the material is no longer out. "So, there's two of them. I'm not allowed...I can't even drink anything in that, and as soon as we're done, I have to take it off and give it back to wardrobe." Andy asked if he only had one "precious" suit, to which Darragh responded that his work wardrobe consists of two jackets; otherwise, it's simply a shirt and black jeans, confirming "not a full suit." Darragh also mentioned that the wardrobe team on the show, hosted by Bradley Walsh, designed the jackets, while Academy Costumes, known for their work in TV and film, tailored the garments. In other news, Darragh recently took to social media to debunk the notion that sugar causes hyperactivity in children, stating it's "just not true". (Image:) Using an example, Darragh, author of 'The Body: 10 Things You Should Know', provided a straightforward reason for any "hyper" behaviour seen in kids at parties. He remarked: "Our bodies actually function by controlling the conditions that our cells are in extremely carefully. It's called homeostasis, and blood sugar is one of those things that is very tightly regulated, this time by the interactions of some hormones, including one you've probably heard of: insulin." Darragh pointed out that individuals who cannot regulate their blood sugar, such as diabetics, must be "very careful" to maintain their levels within a "narrow range". He added: "When children have big intakes of sugar, say, at a party, their bodies very, very quickly reduce the blood sugar to normal levels. It's the party environment and the excitement that sends them hyper, not the sugar." In summary, he declared that there had been "many controlled studies to prove" that sugar doesn't actually make kids hyperactive and encouraged people to "stop saying it."

In Pictures: Tearful politicians showing their sensitive side
The precise cause of Rachel Reeves' distress on the front bench as the Prime Minister jousted with Tory leader Kemi Badenoch remains a matter of speculation but it was certainly uncomfortable to watch. She is far from the first politician to show her emotions by shedding tears though. Here, the PA news agency looks at some other examples over the years of politicians becoming tearful: – Theresa May Theresa May's tenure as prime minister was dominated by Brexit. The former home secretary had the unenviable task of bringing the country back together after a divisive referendum and negotiating the UK's exit from the European Union as she succeeded David Cameron in 2016. Mrs May ultimately failed to deliver the latter of those goals and the toll that responsibility had taken on her during her time in No 10 perhaps showed as she delivered her resignation speech outside Downing Street in May 2019. – Margaret Thatcher Known as the Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher portrayed strength during her 11-year reign as prime minister. However, she too, showed a more human side when she broke down in tears as she said goodbye to Downing Street in 1990. – George Osborne George Osborne wept as he attended Baroness Thatcher's funeral in 2013. Mr Osborne, who was chancellor at the time, was moved to tears during a sermon by then Bishop of London Lord Chartres. – Matt Hancock Matt Hancock raised eyebrows as he appeared to wipe away a tear during a live appearance on Good Morning Britain as he reacted to news that a man called William Shakespeare had become the second person in the UK to receive a Covid vaccine. 'It's been such a tough year for so many people,' the then health secretary told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid in December 2020. – Gordon Brown Gordon Brown wept when he opened up about the death of his daughter Jennifer during a TV interview in 2010. The then prime minister's eyes filled with tears as he told Piers Morgan he knew that his newborn daughter was not going to survive. She died in 2002 aged just 10 days after suffering a brain haemorrhage. – Cherie Blair Cherie Blair broke down in tears in 2002 as she tried to explain away the controversy surrounding convicted fraudster Peter Foster's role in buying two flats for herself and her then prime minister husband Tony Blair. 'I know I'm in a very special position, I'm the wife of the Prime Minister, I have an interesting job and a wonderful family, but I also know I am not Superwoman,' she tearfully said in a statement to the press.
